Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can stream a recorded podcast to YouTube Live with a still image by using OBS as an encoder: put an Image source and a Media Source in one scene, connect OBS to a YouTube Live event with its server URL and stream key, then check the preview and audio before going live. Enable looping only if you want the recording to replay. Confirm you have rights to the audio and image, and keep a local recording if the archive matters.
Before you set up the stream
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- Have the podcast recording and a still image ready. Make sure you have the necessary rights to both, including any music, clips, guest contributions, and artwork.
- Use a stable upload connection. YouTube recommends leaving bandwidth headroom—20% is its recommended figure—and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Create a YouTube Live event and get its connection details
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the event. In OBS, open the stream settings and enter those values to connect the encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your event. YouTube explains the connection details in its encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the event available in Live Control Room; you will use its preview before making the stream public.
Build the still-image and podcast scene in OBS
- Create a scene in OBS and add an Image source for the background. Choose the image file and arrange it to fill the intended canvas. OBS does not prescribe a specific image dimension for this use case, so check the composition in the preview rather than assuming a particular size will fit perfectly.
- Add a Media Source and select the podcast recording. OBS documents support for common audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV. If your version presents a visibility or source-order issue, check that the image remains visible and that the audio source is active.
- For a single play-through, leave the Media Source’s Loop option off. Turn it on only when you want the episode to start again after it reaches the end; looping is a playback choice, not a YouTube event setting. OBS documents its image and media sources in the Quick Start Guide and Media Sources guide.
- Optional text or branding can be added as another source. Keep it legible over the image and verify the final layout in the OBS preview.
Test, preview, and start the broadcast
- Start sending the encoder feed from OBS using the YouTube server URL and stream key you entered.
- Wait for the event preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that the still image appears and that the podcast audio is audible; check OBS’s audio meters and listen to a short test before the actual broadcast.
- When the preview is correct, click Go Live in Live Control Room. Monitor audio, video, and stream health while it runs, and verify that viewers can see the event. YouTube recommends a local recording as a backup; check that the local file is being written if you are recording one.
End the stream and preserve an archive
When the episode is over, end the event in YouTube and stop the encoder feed in OBS. YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours, but streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. Automatic archiving is not a substitute for a backup: YouTube recommends recording a local archive as well. See YouTube’s archive guidance.
Clear rights before rebroadcasting
Having a podcast file does not necessarily give you permission to rebroadcast every part of it. Confirm you have the rights needed for the recording and every included song, clip, guest contribution, and visual. YouTube’s livestream terms require stream providers to hold the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. An archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. Even a license may not prevent a live interruption if the rights owner has not allowlisted the channel. Review YouTube’s Terms of Service and YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
Troubleshoot common problems
- The channel cannot go live: Check channel verification and whether live-streaming restrictions apply. If live streaming was just enabled for the first time, activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The event preview does not appear: Confirm OBS is sending to the correct event’s server URL and stream key, then check that the encoder is running and the event is open in Live Control Room.
- The image appears but there is no sound: Check the Media Source file selection, confirm the source is active, and watch the OBS audio meters while playing the recording. Listen to the preview before going live.
- The stream is unstable: Check the connection and stream-health indicators, and leave upload-bandwidth headroom; YouTube recommends 20%. Avoid relying on a connection that cannot sustain the feed.
- The live broadcast is interrupted for a rights match: Review the matched material and your rebroadcast permissions. A license does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel.
- The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete: Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured automatically. Keep a local recording and check that it is growing during the broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a prerecorded podcast to keep looping on YouTube without leaving a desktop encoder running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running with your computer off; uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it is not a camera-based live setup.
