First check that the files are compatible with FFmpeg’s concat demuxer; test the stream in YouTube’s preview before you click Go live. The right command depends on the files and whether you want the playlist to repeat, so there is no single safe command for every collection.
What you need before you start
- A Windows PC with FFmpeg installed and access to the video files you want to play.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, and its current server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- An upload connection and PC capable of sustaining the video settings you choose.
- Time to test with representative video and audio before streaming publicly.
This guide covers a playlist of local media files. It is not a YouTube playlist URL, and it does not make a camera feed. YouTube’s encoder setup is described at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder; its recommended output options are in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Check that the files can be joined
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file of file directives and processes the listed media consecutively. FFmpeg requires the files to have the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. If the files differ, do not assume they can be joined by stream-copying; inspect them and determine whether they need to be converted to matching formats first. Create a plain-text playlist file, for example playlist.txt, with one file directive per item in the desired order. Use paths that identify the actual files, and check that every path is valid. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer syntax and options are documented in the linked FFmpeg reference; Windows path handling can depend on how the command is launched, so validate the playlist with your installed FFmpeg before using it for a live stream.

Inspect the media before deciding on stream copy or re-encoding. Stream copy avoids encoding work but depends on compatible input streams. Re-encoding can make mismatched files more consistent, at the cost of CPU or hardware-encoder capacity and the need to choose output settings. Incorrect duration metadata can shift timestamps and produce gaps or other artifacts; FFmpeg also notes that differing stream durations can create gaps when timestamps are adjusted.
Create the live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create a live stream or schedule one, then open its stream settings to get the current server URL and stream key. Use the values displayed for that stream; do not rely on an old key or a URL copied from an unrelated setup.
- Treat the stream key as a credential. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s password and address. Do not place the key in a public repository, screenshot, or tutorial. If it is exposed or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement. See Manage live stream settings.
Configure FFmpeg for the playlist
FFmpeg must read the playlist, produce output compatible with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, and send it to the server URL and key shown in Live Control Room. The exact command depends on the input codecs, stream layout, whether the list should repeat, the selected resolution and frame rate, and the protocol displayed or supported by your current setup. The available information here does not establish your files’ properties or a command validated for every Windows shell and FFmpeg build, so check the installed FFmpeg documentation and test your chosen command with these specific files.

Choose stream copy or re-encoding
- Stream copy: consider it only when the playlist inputs have compatible streams and the copied output meets YouTube’s settings. It uses less encoding capacity but does not correct incompatible media.
- Re-encoding: use it when inputs need to be normalized or when the output must use chosen codecs, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio format, or keyframe interval. Check that the PC can encode continuously at the target settings.
Set output quality for the PC and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, recommends constant bitrate encoding, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds. It lists stereo AAC or MP3 audio options and advises matching quality to upload capacity. These are platform recommendations, not proof that a particular spare PC or connection can sustain a given resolution or bitrate. Start with a modest target suited to the source and available upload capacity instead of choosing 4K or a high frame rate by default. YouTube transcodes live input for viewer formats, but that does not eliminate the need for a stable source stream.
Choose how the playlist should run
A concat playlist runs its listed files in sequence; that alone does not establish a repeat-until-stopped loop. Decide whether you want a one-pass stream or repeated playback, then use a looping approach supported by your installed FFmpeg build and validate it on the actual inputs. The right arrangement cannot be specified without knowing the media properties and repeat requirement.

Use the server URL and ingest protocol shown in the current Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but confirm the exact URL and protocol support against the current YouTube settings and your FFmpeg build rather than assuming a transport URL. Do not publish a command containing your real key.
Test, start, and end the stream
- Run a private or otherwise appropriate test using representative clips, including the loudest or most complex audio and motion you expect to stream.
- Start FFmpeg ahead of the planned broadcast, then open the stream’s preview in Live Control Room. Confirm that video and sound arrive and check the displayed stream health.
- Adjust settings if the preview buffers, drops frames, or sounds wrong. YouTube recommends testing before the event and checking the preview and stream health; its YouTube live streaming tips explain its testing guidance.
- When the scheduled stream is ready and the preview is correct, click Go live in Live Control Room.
- When finished, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop FFmpeg from sending output. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archiving outcome for a stream longer than that.
Troubleshoot common problems
The playlist stops, skips, or has gaps
- Check that every path in the text playlist is correct and that all files are readable.
- Compare the files’ stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. If they do not match, choose a compatible conversion workflow rather than assuming concat stream-copy will work.
- Check duration metadata. FFmpeg warns that timestamp adjustment can leave gaps when stream durations differ.
- Test the entire intended sequence locally before broadcasting, especially if the playlist must repeat.
YouTube does not show a preview
- Confirm FFmpeg is running and sending output.
- Re-copy the server URL and key from the current stream settings and verify the protocol. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update FFmpeg.
- Allow time for the encoder output to appear, then inspect Live Control Room for stream-health information.
The video buffers or looks poor
- Lower resolution, bitrate, or frame rate to a level the upload connection can sustain.
- Check upload capacity and Live Control Room stream health while testing.
- If the PC cannot encode reliably, reduce encoding demands or use a compatible stream-copy workflow where the source files allow it.
Audio is missing or incorrect
- Verify that the playlist files contain the expected audio stream and that the selected output audio codec is supported by YouTube’s current guidance.
- Listen to the test preview with representative clips; do not infer working audio from a picture-only preview.
