To stream a playlist from an Azure virtual machine to YouTube Live, run an encoder on the VM, make the playlist files accessible to it, and send the encoded output to the ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. Before starting, confirm the VM has outbound internet access: Azure VMs do not always have it by default, particularly in newer virtual networks.

What you need before you start

  • An Azure virtual machine with an encoder that can read your playlist and media files.
  • A playlist implementation that handles ordering, file durations, transitions, and what happens when the final item ends. A playlist file is an input to your encoder; YouTube receives an encoded live feed, not the playlist itself.
  • A YouTube live stream with its current ingest server URL and stream key, available in YouTube Live Control Room.
  • Outbound connectivity from the VM to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, permitted by the subnet configuration, network security group (NSG), firewall, or other network controls.

The official YouTube and Azure material describes the ingest and networking requirements, but does not provide a verified end-to-end Azure playlist command, playlist format, or VM sizing benchmark. Treat any encoder configuration as an implementation choice and verify it in your own environment.

Prepare the playlist and media

Make the files available to the VM

Store or mount the video and audio files somewhere the encoder process on the VM can read. Check available disk space and permissions, and make sure paths remain valid after a restart if you expect the stream to run unattended.

Check playlist behavior

Confirm the intended order, duration, transitions, and end-of-list behavior before connecting to YouTube. Decide whether the playlist should stop, restart from the beginning, or move to another item when it reaches the end. The reviewed official sources do not specify a particular playlist format or a tested FFmpeg playlist command, so choose and validate an implementation appropriate to your media and encoder.

Create the YouTube live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live stream.
  2. Copy the current ingest server URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the exact connection details provided by YouTube; do not substitute an endpoint copied from an old setup.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Do not put it in public scripts, shared documentation, screenshots, or logs. Store it using a suitably restricted secret or configuration mechanism.

YouTube documents RTMPS ingest requirements: use the rtmps scheme, a valid YouTube RTMPS endpoint and Live application path, and a connection over port 443. The media is sent as RTMP over SSL. See Google for Developers’ Delivering Live YouTube Content via RTMPS.

Confirm Azure outbound connectivity

The VM must be able to initiate a connection to YouTube’s public ingest service. Do not assume that an Azure VM has internet egress simply because it has a private IP or can be reached through another management path.

For API versions released after March 31, 2026, subnets in new Azure virtual networks default to defaultOutboundAccess=false. VMs in those subnets need an explicitly configured outbound method. Existing virtual networks are not automatically changed by that rollout. Check the API version used to create the network and the deployed subnet’s actual configuration.

Choose an egress method that fits the network

Microsoft documents options including a NAT Gateway, load balancer outbound rules, a VM public IP, or a firewall/network virtual appliance route. The right choice depends on your environment’s requirements for operational control, predictable outbound behavior, and security filtering. Verify NSG and firewall policies as well as the egress design; a configured route alone does not guarantee the connection is allowed. See Microsoft’s default outbound access documentation and outbound connectivity design guidance.

Configure the encoder and start the stream

Use YouTube-compatible settings

Choose settings based on YouTube’s current encoder guidance, the source material, the encoder’s capacity on your VM, and the available network egress. For conventional SDR, YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. Its guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum of four seconds. These are settings to configure in your chosen encoder, not a guarantee that a particular VM can encode a particular resolution or bitrate.

Consult YouTube’s current Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions page for the bitrate and resolution guidance appropriate to your output. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. HLS is also documented for some encoder scenarios; select an ingest protocol your encoder supports and that fits your latency and compatibility needs.

Start privately, then verify

  1. Configure the encoder with the playlist input, compatible output settings, and the exact YouTube ingest URL and stream key.
  2. Start the encoder and check that it reports a successful connection and continuing output.
  3. In Live Control Room, confirm the incoming preview and audio before making the stream public.
  4. After going live, monitor encoder status, network drops, and the playlist process. The reviewed official guidance does not prescribe a complete monitoring or automatic playlist-recovery design, so plan those behaviors for your own setup.

Troubleshoot common connection and playback problems

The VM cannot connect to YouTube ingest

  • Check egress first: confirm an outbound method is configured for the subnet, particularly if it belongs to a newer VNet, and check NSG, firewall, or NVA rules.
  • Check the protocol and endpoint: use YouTube’s current RTMPS details, including the rtmps scheme and valid path. RTMPS connects on port 443.
  • Check credentials: re-copy the stream key and ingest URL from the correct live stream in Live Control Room. Keep the key secret while checking it.

YouTube does not show a preview or reports an encoder issue

  • Confirm the encoder is actually sending media and is using a supported video and audio codec.
  • Check that output is configured for CBR and that the keyframe interval is no longer than four seconds; YouTube recommends two seconds.
  • Compare the selected resolution and bitrate with YouTube’s current guidance and the VM’s actual encoding and egress capacity.

The playlist stops, skips, or repeats unexpectedly

  • Check that the encoder can read every listed file and that the playlist order and file paths are correct.
  • Review the playlist implementation’s behavior at item boundaries and at the end of the list; restart or transition behavior is not defined by YouTube’s ingest documentation.
  • Monitor the playlist process separately from the YouTube connection. A healthy ingest connection does not prove that the local playlist process is still advancing.
