To stream a GStreamer pipeline to YouTube Live, encode its audio and video, mux them into FLV, then send the result through a GStreamer RTMP sink using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. The general path is source → convert or scale → encode → flvmux → RTMP sink. YouTube recommends RTMPS when your installed sink and endpoint support it.

How the GStreamer-to-YouTube path works

A source alone is not ready for YouTube ingestion. The pipeline needs compatible encoded audio and video, an FLV muxer, and a sink that sends the muxed stream to the server. GStreamer documents both rtmpsink and rtmp2sink for sending stream data over RTMP; their sink pads accept video/x-flv. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS as supported protocols and recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP.

The official sink examples demonstrate the structure, not a ready-to-run YouTube command. Their example destinations are placeholders, and the elements available on your machine depend on your GStreamer installation.

Prepare YouTube Live Control Room

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter the URL as the sink destination and supply the key using the connection format expected by the selected sink and endpoint. Do not expose the key in a public command, screenshot, script repository, or log you share.
  3. Choose an RTMPS endpoint if YouTube provides one and your installed sink supports the connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the cited GStreamer sink documentation describes RTMP; confirm support for your particular plugin build and endpoint rather than assuming it.
  4. Start the pipeline and wait for YouTube to show an incoming preview. For a scheduled event, use the Live Control Room workflow and select Go live when required.

Check your GStreamer installation

Before building a full pipeline, check which sink and encoder elements are installed and inspect their properties:

gst-launch-1.0 videotestsrc ! x264enc ! flvmux ! rtmp2sink location=rtmp://server.example.com/live/myStream

Here, too, the example server address is a placeholder. It establishes the encode–mux–send arrangement, not the precise authentication syntax for every YouTube endpoint or sink build. Check the sink’s installed documentation and the URL format supplied for your stream before connecting.

Add the real video and audio paths

For a production stream, replace videotestsrc with your actual source and add a separate audio path when the stream has audio. Convert or scale sources where necessary, encode audio and video using formats accepted by YouTube and the muxer, then connect both streams to flvmux before the RTMP sink. The exact source, conversion, encoder, caps, and connection syntax depend on the capture device, operating system, installed plugins, and endpoint; the official sink examples do not define one universal YouTube pipeline.

H.264 bitrate guidance

Video format YouTube minimum YouTube recommended
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These H.264 figures are from YouTube’s encoder settings page as checked on October 3, 2026. YouTube also lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Choose a stream quality your available upload connection can sustain, and test it before an event; a bitrate target is not a measure of your actual upstream capacity.

Keyframes, audio, and picture format

  • Use CBR and set the keyframe interval to two seconds where the encoder permits; do not exceed four seconds. At a fixed frame rate, a two-second interval means keyframes spaced about two seconds apart in stream time.
  • YouTube’s advanced guidance includes progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Check whether your chosen encoder exposes these settings before adding properties to a command.
  • For audio, YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Its guidance gives 44.1 kHz for stereo and 48 kHz for 5.1; for RTMP/RTMPS, 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC.

GStreamer’s keyframe design describes GstForceKeyUnit events that can request an encoder to schedule a keyframe. This is a general mechanism, not proof that every encoder supports the same property or responds identically. Inspect the selected encoder with gst-inspect-1.0 and consult its documentation rather than assuming a property name.

Choose between rtmpsink and rtmp2sink

The available documentation does not establish one sink as universally better. Both are documented ways to send FLV media over RTMP; the practical choice depends on your installed plugins and endpoint behavior.

Decision point What to check
Availability Whether the sink element exists in your local GStreamer installation.
Endpoint and authentication Whether its URL and authentication behavior match the exact YouTube endpoint and key workflow.
Properties Which connection, pacing, or diagnostic properties your installed version exposes.
Transport Whether your sink build supports the RTMPS endpoint you plan to use; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
Successful ingest Whether YouTube receives the stream and displays a healthy incoming preview under representative conditions.

Test the incoming stream before the event

  1. Run the pipeline with a test source or representative content, including moving video and audio if the live production will have both.
  2. Check GStreamer’s verbose output and bus errors. Confirm that elements are present, caps negotiate as expected, and the pipeline reaches a playing state.
  3. Watch Live Control Room for the incoming preview and stream-health status. If YouTube does not receive media, verify the URL and key, sink properties, codec and mux path, and whether the selected endpoint expects RTMP or RTMPS.
  4. Compare the measured output behavior with YouTube’s bitrate and keyframe guidance, then monitor stream health during the event.

When building an application rather than launching a one-off command, account for normal live-source behavior: GStreamer’s streaming tutorial notes that live sources may report GST_STATE_CHANGE_NO_PREROLL, and it demonstrates handling buffering messages and clock loss. Those are general GStreamer application concerns, not YouTube-specific recovery instructions.

Troubleshoot common connection and quality failures

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
gst-launch-1.0 reports that an element is missing Run gst-inspect-1.0 ELEMENT_NAME for each sink, encoder, and muxer. Install or select elements available in your GStreamer build, then revise the pipeline to match their documented properties.
The pipeline fails during negotiation Inspect verbose output and the bus error. Check source caps, conversion or scaling needs, encoder output, and whether the streams reaching flvmux are compatible.
YouTube shows no incoming preview Recheck the selected stream URL and key, confirm that the endpoint and sink agree on RTMP or RTMPS, and verify the sink’s expected connection format. Do not share the key while troubleshooting publicly.
Video appears but audio is absent Confirm that an audio source and encoder are connected into the muxer, and that the chosen audio codec and sample rate match YouTube’s guidance.
Stream health indicates unstable delivery Check the actual outbound bitrate and available upload capacity. Lower the target quality if the connection cannot sustain it, and test with representative content before the event.
Keyframe warnings or delayed ingest Inspect the encoder’s keyframe controls and aim for YouTube’s two-second recommendation without exceeding four seconds. Do not assume all encoders implement a shared property or respond identically to force-key-unit events.
A documented property is rejected Compare the property against gst-inspect-1.0 output for the installed release; GStreamer sink options can be version-dependent.
