You can stream a continuous playlist to YouTube Live from AWS Lightsail by running an encoder on a Linux instance, feeding it the playlist, and configuring it with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube and AWS document the encoder workflow and Lightsail’s hosting options, but they do not provide a verified one-command playlist setup or a Lightsail size guaranteed to work for every stream. Treat encoder commands, instance sizing, and unattended recovery as items to test with your own files and target quality.
How the Lightsail-to-YouTube setup works
The Lightsail instance hosts the encoder process. The encoder reads or produces your playlist as a continuous audio/video feed and sends that feed outbound to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. You configure the encoder with the stream URL and stream key shown for your stream in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains this workflow.
This is not a YouTube playlist of ordinary uploaded videos: the encoder must keep a live feed running, and you must verify how your chosen software handles the playlist, transitions, end-of-file behavior, and reconnects. The official guidance cited here does not prescribe a playlist format, FFmpeg loop command, process supervisor configuration, or reconnect recipe.
Check channel eligibility and get the stream credentials
- Enable live streaming. Verify the YouTube channel and confirm live streaming is available. YouTube says a channel must have no live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the applicable requirements.
- Create or select an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up an encoder stream or select the one you intend to use.
- Copy that stream’s URL and key. Enter the exact values displayed for the selected stream in your encoder. A stream key acts like a password for the feed: do not publish it, put it in a public script repository, or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Choose a Lightsail instance and plan for traffic
Lightsail bundles vCPU, memory, storage, and data transfer into instance plans. The appropriate bundle depends on whether the instance must encode video or merely send already-encoded media, as well as the source format, output resolution, bitrate, and reliability target. AWS identifies compute-optimized plans as useful for video-encoding workloads and recommends EC2 where consistently high CPU performance and greater configurability are needed. Neither point establishes that a particular Lightsail bundle can handle your stream: measure CPU and memory use with your files and intended encoding settings before relying on it. Estimate outbound data before leaving a stream on
At a steady bitrate, approximate traffic using: megabits per second × 0.45 = gigabytes per hour (decimal GB, before protocol overhead). Multiply by planned hours to estimate the stream’s outbound volume. For example, at 4 Mb/s, the estimate is about 1.8 GB per hour, or about 1,296 GB for 30 days of uninterrupted streaming. This is arithmetic for planning, not a Lightsail performance measurement; actual traffic varies with the delivered bitrate and overhead.
Lightsail transfer allowances vary by region. AWS counts transfer in and out toward the allowance, and excess outbound internet transfer can incur charges. Compare your estimate with the allowance for the specific regional plan and monitor usage. A listed transfer allowance is not a promise of streaming performance. Prepare the Linux instance and network access
- Create a Linux Lightsail instance. Select a region and bundle after considering encoding load, local media storage, and transfer allowance. Upload or otherwise make the source media available to the instance, ensuring there is enough storage for the files and any working space your encoder needs.
- Install and configure your encoder. Use an encoder that can read your intended source and produce a continuous feed. Installation steps and playlist syntax depend on the software and Linux distribution; the official YouTube and AWS guidance cited here does not validate a particular package or command.
- Restrict administration access. Lightsail’s firewall controls inbound access to the instance’s public IP, permits outbound traffic, and maintains separate IPv4 and IPv6 rules. Allow SSH only from trusted source IP addresses where practical. The encoder sends its feed outbound to YouTube, so an inbound YouTube ingest port is not needed simply for that outbound connection. Review AWS’s Lightsail firewall documentation.
- Decide whether you need a static IP. A default public IPv4 address can change when an instance is stopped and started. Attach a Lightsail static IP if external administration or DNS depends on a stable address. This is separate from the encoder’s outbound connection to YouTube. See AWS’s static IP instructions.
Configure the encoder for YouTube Live
Enter the Live Control Room stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s YouTube destination settings. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Its general encoder recommendations include H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe frequency of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. - Transport: RTMPS, where supported by your encoder.
- Video: H.264 is among YouTube’s supported codecs. Choose resolution and bitrate based on the source, encoder capacity, and available network upload capacity.
- Rate control: Use CBR as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Select a codec and settings supported by YouTube and appropriate for the source. Confirm that the playlist’s audio is present and not clipping during a test.
Do not assume a higher resolution or bitrate will work just because the instance can start the encoder. A CPU-bound encode can drop frames, while a network bottleneck can disrupt delivery. If the source is already encoded, determine whether the selected encoder can pass it through without transcoding; if you transcode, test the chosen codec and output settings under sustained load. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health rather than treating a configuration as successful merely because it launches.

Build and test the continuous playlist feed
Configure the encoder to read the intended playlist or create a continuous feed from its source files, then point the output at the YouTube stream URL and key. The exact loop flags, playlist syntax, and transition behavior depend on the encoder and media. No universal command is established here, so validate the configuration with your chosen software instead of copying an untested recipe.
- Start with a private or unlisted test. Use the visibility setting appropriate for testing and avoid announcing the stream until you have checked it.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. Confirm that video and audio arrive, the playlist advances as expected, and there are no black gaps, frozen frames, or unintended silence at file boundaries.
- Review stream health. Watch for dropped frames, unstable bitrate, encoder overload, or connection warnings. Adjust resolution, bitrate, or encoding workload and test again if needed.
- Verify the viewer experience. Open the watch page from a separate browser or device and confirm that it is accessible at the intended visibility.
- Test unattended recovery before depending on it. Separately test encoder-process restart, host restart, loss and restoration of network connectivity, and YouTube session behavior. Confirm whether your chosen encoder resumes the playlist at the expected point and whether YouTube requires a new session or key.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That archival note does not establish that one encoder session can remain live indefinitely. Plan and test your own session behavior rather than assuming a single continuous encoder process will be accepted without interruption. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Keep the stream compliant
You are responsible for having the rights needed to broadcast the playlist live and for any resulting archive. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to represent and warrant that it has the necessary rights to exploit the live content worldwide, including relevant music licensing rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. A loop does not exempt the channel from copyright rules, YouTube terms, or applicable law. Confirm that permissions cover both live transmission and archiving before using a track or recording. Read YouTube’s Terms of Service and keep a record of the permissions you rely on.
