You can stream a 4K 60fps playlist whose files are stored on a NAS, but the NAS is usually storage—not the encoder. Use an encoder that can read or queue the NAS files, then send its live output to YouTube with the stream URL and key. YouTube publishes recommended 4K settings, but the encoder, source files, and available upload bandwidth must all support the format.
How the NAS-to-YouTube setup works
The usual signal path is NAS-stored video files → encoder that can play or queue them → YouTube Live → viewers. The NAS stores and serves the files; the encoder reads them, creates the live feed, and sends it to YouTube. YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming and instructs creators to enter a server URL and stream key in that encoder (YouTube’s encoder guide).
A NAS file path is not, by itself, a YouTube playlist input. Choose an encoder whose current documentation confirms it can access your NAS files and play or sequence them as needed. The exact setup and playlist controls depend on that encoder and its version.
Enable YouTube Live before configuring the encoder
- Open YouTube’s live-streaming setup and confirm the channel is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says initial activation may take up to 24 hours (Get started with live streaming).
- In Live Control Room, create or configure the stream and choose its visibility: public, unlisted, or private. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains those controls.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who obtains it could send video to that stream. Use RTMPS for standard ingestion where your encoder offers it; YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS codec options including H.264, HEVC, and AV1 (YouTube encoder settings).
Configure the encoder for 4K at 60 fps
Set the encoder output to 3840 × 2160 (2160p) at 60 frames per second, provided the source, encoder, and network can sustain it. YouTube’s settings page gives the following platform recommendations; they are not a guarantee that a particular NAS, encoder, file, or connection can produce a stable 4K60 stream.

| Setting | YouTube guidance |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 4K/2160p at 60 fps; the encoder settings allow up to 60 fps. |
| Video bitrate | 10–40 Mbps for AV1 or H.265; 35 Mbps recommended for H.264. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds. |
| Latency | 4K streams use normal latency; the low-latency option is not available for 4K. |
These are YouTube Help configuration figures as shown on its encoder settings page reviewed in 2026. Use the option your encoder and source support; do not select HDR just because the resolution is 4K.
Choose SDR or HDR deliberately
For standard SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit in its advanced settings. Live HDR has additional requirements: YouTube’s HDR streaming guidance specifies HEVC and a compatible 10-bit/HDR signal configuration. Both the source and encoder must support the intended HDR output; viewers without a supported playback device see SDR.

Check upload bandwidth, not just NAS speed
The connection that matters for delivery is the encoder’s outbound upload connection to YouTube. YouTube recommends 20% extra capacity beyond the combined bitrate of the primary and any backup stream—its streaming tips say, “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended)” (YouTube streaming tips).
- Check the encoder’s configured video bitrate and add the audio bitrate and any backup-stream bitrate to estimate the total outgoing load.
- Measure upload capacity on the network the encoder will actually use, at the time and place it will stream. Shared networks can reduce the capacity available to the encoder.
- Keep at least YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above the combined stream bitrate. If the connection cannot sustain that margin, lower the stream bitrate or improve the connection before relying on 4K60.
For example, the recommended H.264 video setting is 35 Mbps before audio and any backup stream are counted. The available upstream capacity therefore needs to exceed the combined bitrate by the recommended margin; a nominal plan speed alone does not prove the encoder can maintain it.

Can a NAS broadcast its own playlist directly?
Do not assume so. NAS vendors may provide direct broadcasting for a particular source type, but that is different from playing a queue of ordinary video files. Synology’s Surveillance Station Live Broadcast instructions describe selecting a camera, entering YouTube’s RTMP path and key, and choosing a stream profile. The version 8 documentation says that feature supports H.264 for YouTube Live (Synology Live Broadcast instructions). Synology’s Surveillance Station technical specifications likewise describe Live Broadcast as sending camera streams.
| Approach | Documented source and job | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder reading NAS files | Stored video files; the encoder creates and sends the live feed. | NAS file access, playlist sequencing or looping, codec, resolution, frame rate, encoding capacity, and YouTube URL/key support for the chosen encoder. |
| Synology Surveillance Station Live Broadcast (version 8 instructions) | Camera feed broadcast through the NAS feature; the cited guide says YouTube Live supports H.264 in that feature. | Current NAS model and package version, camera/source compatibility, available profile, codec, and whether the feature meets the needed resolution and frame rate. The cited documentation does not establish stored-file playlist sequencing or 4K60 output. |
Check documentation for your exact NAS model, operating-system and package version, source type, and stream profile before treating a built-in camera-broadcast feature as a file-playback encoder.

Test the full chain before going live
YouTube recommends a rehearsal with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, a preview in Live Control Room, and monitoring stream health and audio/video quality (encoder settings; streaming tips). Check each part of the actual setup:
- Confirm the encoder can open every NAS file and reach the next item in the intended order.
- Check that the output is 2160p at 60 fps and that the chosen codec and bitrate appear as intended in the encoder and YouTube preview.
- Listen for audio, watch for picture or timing problems, and confirm transitions between playlist items.
- Verify the encoder’s upload capacity has the recommended headroom and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Confirm the stream’s visibility and inspect the final YouTube watch page before sharing it.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
- YouTube does not accept the stream: Check that Live is enabled for the channel, the correct server URL and current stream key are in the encoder, and the encoder is using an ingestion protocol and codec YouTube supports. Initial Live activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The video is not 4K60: Check the source file’s resolution and frame rate, the encoder’s output settings and capacity, and YouTube’s incoming stream preview. A 4K setting in one component cannot create 4K60 if another component does not provide it.
- The stream buffers or loses health: Measure actual outbound capacity from the encoder’s network, account for audio and any backup stream, and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% margin. Congestion or other users on a shared network can reduce available upload.
- A NAS broadcast option will not play files: Confirm whether the feature is designed for camera feeds rather than stored-file playback. The cited Synology instructions document a camera broadcast workflow, not a queued file playlist.
- HDR appears as SDR or is unavailable: Check that the source, encoder, codec, bit depth, and HDR signal configuration meet YouTube’s HDR requirements; 4K resolution alone does not enable HDR.

Keep copyright and YouTube rules in view
Having a video file on your NAS does not establish that you have the rights needed to broadcast it. Before streaming, confirm that you have permission for the video, music, and other material in every playlist item, and review YouTube’s applicable live-streaming and copyright requirements. A technically successful stream does not guarantee that YouTube will permit or keep the content live.
