To stream a gaming highlights playlist at 4K and 60 fps on YouTube Live, use OBS Studio with VLC installed: create a scene, add a VLC Video source containing your clips, then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. For YouTube’s current ingest guidance, set H.264 video to 35 Mbps, use CBR, and set keyframes every 2 seconds. Test the full setup before scheduling your broadcast; the right settings cannot guarantee that every viewer receives a 4K60 version, because YouTube transcodes streams for different devices and connections.

What you need before you start

  • OBS Studio and VLC: OBS’s VLC Video source plays a playlist and requires VLC to be installed. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Project: Media Sources
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming: YouTube says first-time live streaming may take up to 24 hours to become available, so enable it in advance. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
  • Gaming clips and audio you have the right to broadcast: This includes music, game audio, and any other material in the clips. A playlist being yours or publicly available does not by itself establish that you have the necessary rights.
  • A computer and internet connection that pass a representative test: There is no universal computer specification established for encoding every creator’s footage. Test with your actual clips and monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback.

Build and connect the playlist in OBS

  1. Enable live streaming and prepare the event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream if you want an upcoming watch page to promote. Set the title, description, visibility, and audience for the event. Scheduling can also make the stream discoverable to subscribers through their feeds. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder YouTube: Schedule a live stream
  2. Install VLC to match OBS. Install the same architecture of VLC as your OBS installation. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC so the VLC Video source can find the required components.
  3. Create the playlist scene. In OBS, select or create a scene, then use the Sources dock’s add control and choose VLC Video. Add the local highlight files in the order you want them to play. Choose whether the list should loop or shuffle. OBS documents looping as on and shuffling as off by default; confirm the settings you want rather than assuming they are unchanged. The VLC Video source can play multiple media items as a playlist. OBS Project: Media Sources
  4. Check playback and sound. Make the source visible in the scene and verify that playback continues. Listen to the soundtrack and game audio, check the mixer level, and confirm that the first clip starts as intended. Test clips with fast movement as well as quieter sections; a still image or menu is not a meaningful test of gaming motion.
  5. Connect OBS to YouTube. In YouTube Studio’s encoder setup, copy the server or stream URL and the stream key into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube uses the key to authorize the encoder to send the feed, so treat it as a secret: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio. Set OBS for 4K at 60 fps

These are YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for incoming video, not a guarantee that every viewer will see a 4K60 rendition. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions. YouTube: Live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions

Setting Recommended setup What to know
Resolution and frame rate 3840 × 2160 (2160p), 60 fps Use this when the source clips and encoding setup support genuine 4K60. YouTube lists frame rates up to 60 fps.
Video codec and bitrate H.264: 35 Mbps YouTube lists 35 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60 fps.
Alternative codecs AV1 or H.265: 10–40 Mbps YouTube lists this codec-specific bitrate range for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. Choose an option supported by both your encoder and computer; do not assume every setup supports every codec.
Rate control CBR YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding.
Keyframe interval 2 seconds This is YouTube’s recommendation; the interval should not exceed 4 seconds.
Connection protocol RTMPS YouTube recommends RTMPS for sending the live feed.

Configure the stream output in OBS to match the chosen resolution, frame rate, codec, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. The exact labels and location of encoder settings can vary with OBS version and the encoder selected, so confirm the active output settings rather than relying on a saved profile. Test that your upload connection sustains the chosen bitrate while OBS and YouTube report healthy stream status; YouTube advises testing upload bitrate but does not specify a universal headroom multiplier. SDR versus HDR

For an ordinary SDR highlights playlist, do not add HDR configuration. Consider HDR only if the footage is genuinely HDR and your encoder supports the required workflow. A nominal 4K or 60 fps output setting cannot add detail or frame information that is absent from the source clips.

Test, start, and monitor the broadcast

  1. Run a representative test. Check video, audio, playlist order, looping behavior, and motion using the actual clips you plan to air. If appropriate, make a private or unlisted test event. Confirm that OBS is encoding at the intended resolution and frame rate.
  2. Allow time before the scheduled event. YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours before a scheduled stream and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. YouTube: Live streaming tips
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview. After starting the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview and confirm the correct video and audio arrive before starting the public event. Read stream-health indicators and messages; address warnings instead of assuming a successful connection means the feed is healthy.
  4. Monitor during the stream. Keep an eye on OBS and YouTube stream health, especially for dropped frames, interruptions, audio problems, or a playlist that stops advancing. If the stream degrades, check the upload connection and encoder load, then lower the output bitrate or resolution if needed and verify the change in YouTube’s preview.

End the stream and understand the archive

When the broadcast is over, stop the encoder in OBS. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. If you want to send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream afterward, YouTube’s Live Redirect feature has eligibility conditions: the creator sending the redirect must have more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes. YouTube: Schedule a live stream YouTube: Use Live Redirect

Troubleshooting common problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or change
VLC Video source is missing or does not play clips VLC is absent or its architecture does not match OBS. Install VLC matching your OBS architecture, then reopen or refresh OBS and test the source again.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed Incorrect server URL or stream key, or live streaming is not enabled yet. Copy the current URL and key from the event’s YouTube encoder setup, check that live streaming is enabled, and reconnect. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time live-streaming activation.
4K60 stream has dropped frames or poor stream health The encoder or upload connection may not sustain the configured output. Check OBS rendering/encoding status and YouTube stream health during a representative test. Reduce bitrate or output resolution if the problem persists; the evidence does not establish a universal computer specification or upload-headroom multiplier.
Viewers do not all see 4K60 YouTube creates multiple output formats for varying devices and network conditions. Confirm the incoming stream is healthy and correctly configured, but do not promise a particular rendition to every viewer.
Playlist order, repeat, or audio is wrong Source settings, file order, visibility, or soundtrack levels may not match expectations. Review the VLC Video playlist order and loop/shuffle choices, ensure the source is visible and playing, then test the full sequence and audio before going live.
