You can run the encoder on a computer you keep on, or use a cloud service that loops uploaded videos. Before starting, clear the rights to both the visuals and music, choose settings your upload connection can sustain, and arrange a local recording: YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured in its archive.
This guide reflects YouTube Help guidance accessed in 2026; interface labels and technical recommendations can change.
Choose how to keep the loop running
A 24-hour broadcast needs a source that keeps sending video and audio to YouTube for the entire session. The two practical approaches are local encoding and cloud playback.
| Approach | What stays running | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Local encoder | Your computer and encoder software, plus a stable internet connection | Power, upload capacity, monitoring, and a local recording if you need an archive |
| Cloud playback | A cloud service loops your uploaded video and sends it to YouTube | Service capabilities and terms; keep an independent copy of your source file |
YouTube’s getting-started guidance supports software and hardware encoders and says expensive gear is not necessary. YouTube also lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded videos; that listing is not an assessment of its current pricing or capabilities. The rest of the setup below covers the do-it-yourself encoder method. If you do not want a computer at home to run throughout the broadcast, see StreamNeo after the setup steps.
Prepare the video, audio, and rights
Make the loop play continuously
Prepare a prerecorded ambient video with the intended soundtrack. Set the encoder or playback software to repeat the file or playlist continuously. Check that the end and beginning do not create an unwanted gap, abrupt audio cut, or visual jump. Test the actual file from start to finish—or test the loop point—before broadcasting. A 24-hour live stream is a continuous transmission; it does not mean YouTube will necessarily save a complete 24-hour replay.

Clear both the image and sound for live use
YouTube’s livestream terms make the content provider responsible for having the necessary rights for live content worldwide, including music rights. Use material you created or have explicitly cleared for livestreaming and for any archive you intend to keep. A license for ordinary playback is not automatically a license for a live broadcast; check the scope and conditions of your rights.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace the feed with a placeholder and warn you; continued use can interrupt or terminate the stream. Even if you have permission, a rights owner may need to add your channel to an allowlist to prevent an interruption. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and the YouTube Terms of Service.

Do not assume the loop qualifies for monetization
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to livestreams. Monetized content should be original and authentic, and highly repetitive or mass-produced programming may be ineligible. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: having permission to use material does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. This is a policy risk, not a prediction of how YouTube will decide an individual channel’s review. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
Set up the YouTube Live stream
- Enable live streaming if needed. In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream creation flow and follow the channel’s verification and activation prompts. If live streaming has never been enabled on the channel, YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select an encoder stream. For a scheduled broadcast, schedule the event and connect the encoder to its stream details.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream setup, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure the encoder. Select the loop file or playlist, enable repeat playback, and use the video, audio, and connection settings in the next section. Start with a test or an unlisted event if you need to check the pipeline without broadcasting publicly.
- Check the incoming preview. Start sending from the encoder, then confirm that Live Control Room receives a stable picture and sound. For a scheduled event, inspect the preview before selecting “Go live.”
- Start the broadcast and monitor it. Once the preview and stream health look right, start the live event in YouTube Studio. Leave the encoder running and watch for dropped connection, audio, or playback problems.
- End the session cleanly. When the event is over, end it in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder. If you are recording locally, confirm that the file has finished writing before shutting down the computer.

Choose encoder settings for an ambient loop
YouTube’s encoder guidance accessed in 2026 recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate encoding, and a keyframe interval of two seconds; keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart. Its current guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube transcodes the incoming feed into formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need to send a stable feed at a suitable quality.
| Setting | Practical starting point | YouTube guidance or qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p at 30 fps is a sensible starting target for a modest ambient loop if the source supports it | Choose a target your source and connection can sustain; frame rates up to 60 fps are supported |
| Video codec | H.264 for broad encoder compatibility | YouTube’s encoder guidance also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1 |
| Video bitrate, H.264 at 1080p30 | Pick a stable value within the recommended range | 5–14 Mbps |
| Video bitrate, H.264 at 720p30 | Pick a stable value within the recommended range | 3–8 Mbps |
| Bitrate mode | Constant bitrate (CBR) | Recommended by YouTube |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | Recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Audio | Stereo AAC at 128 Kbps | YouTube lists 128 Kbps for stereo audio and supports AAC or MP3 |
| Ingest protocol | RTMPS | Recommended by YouTube |
The bitrate ranges are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that your encoder or internet connection can sustain the upper end. Run an upload-speed test and leave headroom for normal connection variation; if the feed drops frames or loses connection, lower the output bitrate or resolution and test again. Use the settings table on YouTube’s live encoder settings page when configuring a stream, since recommendations can change.

Protect the 24-hour broadcast and its recording
YouTube’s archive limit matters for any continuous stream: streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube states, “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” Do not treat the YouTube replay as your only copy of a 24-hour session. YouTube: Archive live streams
- Record locally where possible. Enable recording in the encoder or use a separate recording path, and ensure the computer has sufficient storage for the full session.
- Verify the recording is growing. Check the output file after recording starts and periodically during the broadcast; a recording indicator alone does not prove that usable data is being written.
- Check disk space and power. A full drive, sleep setting, restart, or power loss can stop local encoding or recording. Disable sleep for the session and confirm available storage before going live.
- Test the real content. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the actual broadcast. Confirm that the loop, soundtrack, and local recording behave as expected.
- Check viewer access and stream health. Verify playback from the channel or watch page and on a phone, and keep an eye on audio and video quality. If using a backup encoder, test failover; a backup is optional for a solo ambient loop.
YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend setting up the encoder at least two hours in advance and starting it 15 minutes before an event. For a continuous ambient broadcast, use that lead time as a practical preflight window rather than assuming a scheduled-event checklist requires redundant equipment.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| Live Control Room does not receive a signal | Incorrect stream URL or key, encoder not sending, or stream activation not complete | Confirm the encoder is started and its URL and key match the stream selected in YouTube Studio. If this is the channel’s first live stream, allow for YouTube’s stated activation time of up to 24 hours. |
| Buffering, dropped frames, or unstable stream health | Bitrate exceeds available upload capacity or the connection is fluctuating | Run an upload test, lower bitrate or resolution, and test again with the actual loop. Keep constant bitrate enabled. |
| Picture arrives but audio is missing or distorted | Wrong audio input, unsupported encoder setting, or source-file issue | Check the encoder’s audio source and channel, use AAC or MP3, and confirm audio is present in the local playback and preview. |
| The stream stops unexpectedly | Computer sleep, power or network interruption, encoder crash, or a copyright match | Check the machine and encoder logs or status, power and network, and YouTube Live Control Room alerts. Review copyright warnings; do not restart with disputed content until the rights issue is resolved. |
| YouTube replay is missing or incomplete | The session exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold | Use the verified local recording. YouTube may not capture a stream longer than 12 hours. |
| Playback does not loop cleanly | Repeat is disabled or the file has a gap, fade, or abrupt cut at its boundary | Enable repeat in the playback or encoder workflow and inspect the transition between the final and first frames and audio. |
