You can run a continuous synthwave livestream by looping prepared audio or video in FFmpeg and sending its encoded output to YouTube Live with the channel’s server URL and stream key. The loop handles repeating the media; it does not by itself restart FFmpeg after a crash, restore a failed network connection, or guarantee uninterrupted playback. Plan for monitoring, recovery, music rights, and YouTube’s archive limit before treating the stream as 24/7.
How the 24/7 FFmpeg setup works
The basic chain is prepared synthwave audio or video, an FFmpeg input and loop or playlist arrangement, an encoded live output, then YouTube Live’s ingest server URL and stream key. YouTube describes an encoder as converting content to a digital format and instructs creators to enter the server URL and stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Keep two jobs distinct: repeating the media source and maintaining the live transport. A source can reach its end while FFmpeg remains active; alternatively, FFmpeg or the connection can fail even though the playlist is valid. The command and process supervision must address both. No single loop option guarantees a gapless 24/7 broadcast.
Prepare YouTube Live before configuring FFmpeg
- Check channel eligibility. Live streaming must be enabled, the channel verified, and the account free of live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours. See Get started with live streaming.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to run.
- Copy the ingest details. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into your FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or include it in screenshots. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Check the stream health and rehearse. Start with a short private or unlisted test where appropriate, confirm picture and audio in Live Control Room, and verify that your planned source transitions behave as expected.
Choose YouTube ingest settings
YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance lists RTMP and RTMPS, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and frame rates up to 60 fps. Check the current guide and your installed FFmpeg build before choosing an encoder and exact command; the command-line options available depend on that build. Allow upload headroom above the selected stream bitrate so ordinary network variation does not immediately saturate the connection. For a channel running from a home or office connection, test at the intended resolution and bitrate for long enough to reveal instability. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into multiple viewing formats, so you do not need to encode every viewer rendition yourself.
Configure looping and output without assuming recovery
FFmpeg can read a media input, encode audio and video as needed, and send the result to the YouTube ingest URL with the stream key. The exact command depends on whether the source is a single file, a playlist, or separate audio and visual assets; it also depends on the installed FFmpeg build and YouTube’s current ingest settings. Validate your specific command with a rehearsal instead of relying on a generic command as a guarantee of unattended operation.

- Confirm that the chosen input method repeats or advances through the intended programming rather than stopping at end of file.
- Check that audio continues across source transitions and that the output remains within your chosen codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate, and keyframe interval.
- Keep the stream key out of public scripts and logs. Restrict access to any configuration file that contains it.
- Watch both FFmpeg’s output and YouTube Live Control Room. A process that appears active locally does not prove YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
Build continuity and recovery into the operation
There are several independent failure points: the playlist or source can end, the FFmpeg process can exit, the network can drop, the host can restart, or YouTube’s ingest state can change. A robust setup needs a response for each, plus a person or monitoring system that notices when recovery did not work.
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes network-output recovery options including attempt_recovery, a configurable wait between attempts, a maximum attempt count, and recover_any_error. It also documents drop_pkts_on_overflow, which can let streaming continue without delaying input but may omit part of the stream. These are recovery mechanisms, not a promise of uninterrupted playback. Review the FFmpeg Formats Documentation for the options supported by your build.

- Plan how to detect a stopped process and restart it; a process supervisor is an operational design choice, not something validated by the FFmpeg documentation cited here.
- Decide how the host itself will recover after a reboot or power loss.
- Check whether source completion or playlist errors can leave FFmpeg running without useful output.
- Rehearse a source transition and an intentional network interruption, then verify what viewers see and whether YouTube accepts the resumed connection.
- Monitor stream health rather than assuming that a reconnect means the broadcast is healthy again.
Plan archives separately from the live broadcast
YouTube Help states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That condition does not establish that a single broadcast running continuously for 24/7 will be archived as one complete video. Plan any recording or archive requirement separately from keeping the live stream running, and check the current Live Control Room behavior before relying on an automatic recording. Clear synthwave music and visual rights
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, including content in other broadcasts. If it detects a match, it may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn the creator; if the content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent a live interruption: YouTube says the rights holder may need to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Claims on an archived live stream may also arrive after the stream ends. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

- Confirm that your permission covers the actual uses involved, including livestreaming and any recording or archive you intend to keep, as well as the relevant music and visual assets.
- Ask the rights owner whether the channel must be allowlisted in Content ID for live use, and verify that the correct channel is covered.
- Do not assume that a “synthwave” genre label, a royalty-free description, attribution, or possession of a license automatically prevents Content ID matching or interruption.
