You can use an M2 Mac mini to run OBS and send a continuous prerecorded-video or other OBS-produced feed to YouTube. Set up YouTube Live first, configure OBS to use a supported encoder and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain, then test the actual stream before relying on it. That establishes compatibility—not guaranteed unattended operation: if power, the Mac, OBS, or internet fails, the sources here do not establish that OBS will recover automatically.
Before you begin: make sure YouTube Live is ready
-
Verify your YouTube channel and check that it has not had a live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned start. See YouTube live streaming tips.
-
Install OBS using the official OBS macOS installation instructions: download the macOS disk image and move OBS into Applications. Supported macOS versions change; check the OBS macOS versions page for the current compatibility table before installing.
-
Prepare the video, audio, and OBS scene you intend to leave running. Compatibility does not prove that every scene, source count, resolution, or workload will run continuously on every M2 setup. Test the real production configuration.

Can an M2 Mac mini run OBS for a 24/7 stream?
Yes, the M2 Mac mini is a plausible OBS host. OBS lists Apple Silicon support on macOS and documents Apple VideoToolbox H.264 streaming support for Apple Silicon. Apple’s specifications for the 2023 M2 Mac mini list hardware-accelerated H.264 and HEVC media engines, as well as Gigabit Ethernet. Those specifications and software support establish that the components can work together; they do not guarantee that a particular scene or machine will stream without interruption.
OBS explicitly cautions that a compatible system does not necessarily guarantee streaming or recording capability. Your practical limits depend on the selected output, scene complexity, other sources and applications, network stability, and power. Check the stream under the same conditions you plan to use in production.
Create the YouTube event and connect OBS
-
In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live event you will use. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions.
-
In the event’s stream settings, copy the server URL and select or create a stream key. YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys and provides auto-start and auto-stop settings. Keep the key private: it authorizes an encoder to send a feed to the event.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy. -
In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server configuration, enter YouTube’s server URL as well. Do not share screenshots, recordings, or logs that expose the key.

Choose resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and encoding
Use YouTube’s current encoder table rather than treating one bitrate as right for every stream. Recommendations vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are H.264 recommendations for those specific modes, not universal targets for other codecs or settings. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the mode you choose.
| Setting | Practical starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Encoder and protocol | H.264 over RTMPS is a straightforward starting choice for OBS on Apple Silicon. | YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265, and AV1. OBS’s documented Apple Silicon streaming path supports H.264; do not assume every codec is available in your OBS configuration. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose a mode appropriate to the video and your upload connection; use a lower mode if the higher one is not stable. | Higher resolution and frame rate require more bandwidth. Use the codec-specific YouTube table rather than applying the 1080p examples to other modes. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube lists constant bitrate as the standard setting. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC stereo; YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo. | YouTube also lists MP3. Choose settings supported by the selected workflow and confirm the current guidance. |
| Video format | Progressive, square pixels, SDR for a straightforward SDR stream. | Match the output to the source material and the current YouTube requirements. |
Run an upload-speed check and leave capacity for normal network variation rather than setting the stream to consume all measured upload bandwidth. YouTube does not specify a single headroom amount for every connection. A wired connection can avoid some Wi-Fi variability when your router and setup permit it; built-in Gigabit Ethernet is listed for the 2023 M2 Mac mini, but an Ethernet connection alone cannot guarantee a stable upload.
Test the stream before making it public
-
Start with a representative scene, including the audio and movement your channel will actually use. A static desktop test does not reveal every issue in a video-heavy production.
-
Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before going public. Look for a stable picture, correct audio, and healthy stream status.

Monitor stream health during a sufficiently long test to spot intermittent upload or encoder problems. YouTube recommends testing before starting a live stream. Lower latency can improve immediacy, but YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering; a passive 24/7 channel may not need the lowest-latency setting.

What happens if the internet, power, or OBS stops?
A Mac mini running OBS depends on the computer, OBS, power, and network remaining available. The official guidance cited here explains setup and testing, but it does not establish a guaranteed OBS/Mac restart or recovery sequence for every application, system, power, or internet failure. Do not promise that the stream will resume unattended without testing and verifying the behavior of your complete setup.
Likewise, the cited guidance does not establish the current maximum duration of one continuous YouTube event or guarantee how much of a 24/7 stream will be archived. Confirm current YouTube behavior for your channel and event before planning a continuous schedule or relying on a complete VOD. Copyright and reused-content rules still apply to prerecorded material: only stream content you have the rights to use, and review YouTube’s current policies before building a continuous channel around third-party material.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want a home computer and connection to be part of the stream’s runtime, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for keeping a channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The service loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer can be off; it is not a way to go live from a camera.

-
YouTube Live is unavailable: verify the channel and check for a live-stream restriction. If activation is new, allow up to 24 hours.
-
OBS will not connect: check that the selected YouTube event, server URL, and stream key match. Replace a key only through YouTube’s Live Control Room and update OBS with the new one; never expose it publicly.
-
Preview is buffering or stream health is poor: reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a mode your upload can sustain. Re-run the upload check and test again, leaving room for network variation.
-
Video works but audio is missing or wrong: verify the intended audio source is active in OBS, confirm the event preview has sound, and check the chosen audio format and bitrate.

OBS runs but the stream stops after a disruption: check power, internet, and OBS state. A successful initial setup does not establish automatic recovery after a failure; verify the behavior of your own setup before relying on unattended operation.
Cost and operating trade-offs
Running OBS locally means you supply and maintain the Mac, power, internet connection, and any backup or monitoring arrangements you choose. It offers direct control over OBS scenes and sources, but the cited sources do not establish the total cost or a reliable unattended-recovery guarantee. A cloud service shifts the streaming runtime away from your home computer; compare the provider’s supported media workflow, recovery behavior, rights requirements, and current pricing before choosing. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, but that listing alone does not establish that it is best or suitable for every channel.
