YouTube then transcodes that incoming feed into multiple playback formats; you do not need to send a separate stream for every viewer resolution. Choose the feed settings for your source and upload capacity, then test and monitor the stream.
What “different resolutions” means on a 24/7 stream
Your encoder’s resolution is the quality of the feed it sends to YouTube—called the ingest stream. Viewers choose from playback options YouTube makes available after processing that feed. Sending a 1080p feed does not force every viewer to watch at 1080p, nor does it mean you need a separate 720p or 480p feed for other viewers. YouTube’s current guidance recommends automatic resolution and frame-rate detection by default. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (guidance verified October 3, 2026).
Choose an ingest resolution and bitrate
Pick a format your source, encoder and sustained upload connection can handle. Higher resolution and frame rate raise the recommended incoming bitrate. For a mostly static scene, 30 fps may be adequate; fast movement can benefit from 60 fps if the encoder and connection can reliably support it. If upload capacity is shared or unstable, step down the resolution or frame rate rather than running at the edge of the connection.
The following are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in Mbps, not guarantees of visual quality or a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain them. H.265 is also known as HEVC. Check YouTube’s current settings guidance before configuring because recommendations and supported options may change.

For example, YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p/30 fps. These are codec-specific recommendations, not interchangeable targets. YouTube’s settings page also lists minimum settings; consult it for the current minimum for your exact setup.
Configure the encoder and YouTube ingest
Core encoder settings
YouTube’s general live guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. YouTube recommends RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. HDR has additional codec and protocol requirements, so do not assume the general settings apply to HDR. In particular, YouTube’s settings guidance excludes AV1 HDR support. Confirm the relevant options on YouTube’s encoder settings page.
Resolution selection
Automatic detection is YouTube’s recommended default. If you need to select a specific ingest resolution manually, create or choose a custom stream key in YouTube Studio, enable “Turn on manual settings,” and set the stream resolution there. Exact screens can change, so use the current YouTube Studio labels and settings page as the authority.

Latency trade-off
If audience interaction matters, consider latency separately from resolution. YouTube says 2160p/4K streams do not offer its low-latency option and are optimized for quality at normal latency. Lower latency can increase playback buffering, so test the experience on the devices and networks your viewers use. See YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.

Run an upload-speed test under realistic conditions, then leave at least 20% headroom beyond the total outgoing stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Include any backup feed when calculating the total: simultaneous primary and backup streams need capacity too. A speed-test peak is not proof that the connection will remain stable around the clock; a network disruption can interrupt a live stream. Prefer a stable wired connection where practical, and avoid saturating the same connection with other uploads.

Set up the 24/7 channel and test before launch
- Confirm live eligibility. YouTube’s live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement may take up to 24 hours. Check current eligibility and setup in YouTube Studio before scheduling a launch. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips.
- Choose the source and operating method. Decide whether you are streaming a camera/live production or playing prerecorded material continuously. YouTube lists software encoders, standalone hardware encoders and cloud tools. Its help page describes OBS as free, open-source streaming software and Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos; those listings are not a comparative review or endorsement.
- Set the feed format. Choose the ingest resolution, frame rate and codec, then apply the matching bitrate recommendation above. Leave YouTube’s automatic resolution detection enabled unless you have a reason to use a custom stream key with manual settings.
- Protect the connection. Measure upload capacity, preserve the 20% margin above total outgoing bitrate, and account for a backup feed if configured. For a continuous channel, plan how you will notice and respond to a failed connection or encoder.
- Run a representative preflight. Test with the same kind of movement and audio as the real program. Check the Live Control Room preview, stream health and messages; confirm viewers can access the event on intended devices. If you have configured backup-encoder failover, test that handoff before relying on it. These checks reduce avoidable surprises but cannot guarantee uninterrupted service. YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
- Plan recording and rewind separately. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable archive. YouTube warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Do not assume one 24-hour live event will become a complete, fully rewindable video. See YouTube Help: Archive live streams and YouTube Help: DVR on live streams.
Keep a continuous channel within YouTube’s rules
Resolution and encoder compliance do not establish that the content itself is permitted or eligible for monetization. Before looping recordings, confirm you have the necessary rights to all video, music and other material, and review YouTube’s current copyright and channel monetization policies. Repeatedly broadcasting material you do not have rights to can lead to claims, restrictions or removal. Reused-content monetization decisions are separate from whether a stream can technically run. Do not treat a successful test stream as clearance to broadcast or monetize every recording. Use this copyright safety checklist as a planning aid, alongside YouTube’s current rules.
Choose an operating approach
The practical choice depends on whether your source is live or prerecorded, the resolution and codec you need, how much local hardware and network dependence you can accept, and how you will monitor or recover from failures. YouTube identifies software, hardware and cloud tools as possible categories; it does not establish a best option or compare their costs.
- Local software encoder: useful when you want direct control from a computer, but the computer, encoder and connection must remain operational for the stream to continue.
- Standalone hardware encoder: may suit a dedicated live production. Choose only after checking that the device supports the required resolution, frame rate, codec and ingest protocol; an appliance is not a requirement for continuous streaming.
- Cloud playout for prerecorded videos: can keep a playlist running without a home computer staying on. Verify service capabilities and recovery behavior against your needs; platform listings alone do not prove comparative performance.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded 24/7 YouTube channel, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60 fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month. A slot includes 10 GB storage, pooled across active slots. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and streams to YouTube, not from a live camera. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.

Troubleshoot common 24/7 stream problems
The stream drops or keeps buffering
Check YouTube’s stream-health messages and encoder status first. Compare the sustained upload rate with the total outgoing bitrate and restore the recommended headroom. If the connection is shared or variable, lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a setting it can sustain. Check for local network interruptions and verify that a configured backup encoder actually takes over in a test.
The image is soft or viewers lack a desired playback option
Confirm the encoder is sending the resolution you selected and that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed; allow processing time and check playback on the intended device. The encoder’s ingest resolution is not a command that forces a viewer’s playback resolution. YouTube generates playback formats from the incoming stream.
The stream key or manual resolution setting does not work
Verify the selected key in YouTube Studio matches the encoder, and check whether “Turn on manual settings” is enabled for the custom key when manual ingest resolution is required. If you changed stream settings, recheck the encoder’s destination and the preview before going live.

Audio, movement or color differs from the test
Repeat the preflight using representative source material. Check audio input and selected AAC or MP3 encoding, confirm the frame rate and bitrate, and look at stream-health messages. HDR has additional requirements; verify YouTube’s current protocol and codec requirements rather than assuming standard SDR settings apply.
The live event has no complete archive or full rewind
This can be expected for a stream that exceeds 12 hours: YouTube says capture may not occur and DVR may be limited or unavailable. Maintain a local recording when a complete archive matters, and do not rely on YouTube’s live-event DVR as the sole copy.
Cost and planning notes
Local software may avoid a dedicated streaming-service fee, but continuous operation still depends on powered hardware, a stable connection and monitoring. Hardware and cloud approaches have their own costs and trade-offs; YouTube’s help documentation does not provide a like-for-like cost comparison. Estimate the total over the period you plan to stream, and consider the value of unattended operation, recovery, storage and your own time. For a rough comparison of local and cloud costs, use the cloud vs PC cost calculator. To estimate how long a recording will take to upload, use the upload-time calculator.
