You can stream a thunderstorm-and-rain video on YouTube around the clock with an encoder such as OBS, provided your channel is eligible, your video and audio are cleared for broadcast, and the computer and internet connection stay available. The main catch: one uninterrupted stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- A rain or thunderstorm video and audio that you own or are authorized to broadcast.
- An encoder, such as OBS, plus a stable internet connection and a computer that can remain on for the intended broadcast.
- Your YouTube stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish or share it.
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder stream; copy its stream URL and key into your encoder. Interface labels can vary, so use the current English labels if your Studio language differs.
Prepare a rights-cleared rain scene
In OBS or another encoder, create a scene with your own storm footage, or material you have permission to use, and add audio you are allowed to broadcast. Do not assume that a video or sound is reusable just because it is easy to download, or because you credit its creator.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can lead to a placeholder, interruption, or termination. Even if you have a license, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist to avoid interruptions. Permission to broadcast is also separate from eligibility to monetize the stream.

Configure the encoder for YouTube
YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion. Use the following H.264 recommendations as starting points, not as a guarantee that your particular connection can sustain them:

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026. The 240p–720p row is the recommendation for that range at 30 fps; do not treat it as a setting for every frame rate.
Settings to check
- Protocol: RTMPS, which YouTube recommends; RTMP/RTMPS are the listed ingestion options.
- Video: H.264, at a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain.
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3 are listed for RTMP/RTMPS.
- Stream destination: enter the stream URL and key from YouTube’s Live Control Room.
Run a test with representative video motion and audio, check upload speed, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages. A bitrate that is too high for a connection can cause unstable delivery; lower the output quality or bitrate until the encoder and YouTube report a healthy stream.

Start the broadcast and keep it running
- Confirm live streaming is enabled for your eligible channel, then create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- In your encoder, paste in the stream URL and key. Keep the key private.
- Select the prepared rain scene and the tested output settings, then start streaming from the encoder.
- Check the Live Control Room for stream-health warnings and confirm the broadcast is showing as expected.
- For a true always-on local setup, keep the computer, encoder, source media, power, and internet connection running. Plan how you will notice an interruption and restart the encoder; a local setup depends on those components and cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive limitation
YouTube says a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need an automatic YouTube archive, keep each live session under 12 hours. That means scheduling shorter sessions rather than assuming one continuous 24/7 session will be saved; it does not guarantee uninterrupted viewer playback between sessions.
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. This is optional, and YouTube does not specify a required drive type or capacity. Check that local recording is enabled in your encoder and that you have enough available storage for the recording you intend to keep.
Understand copyright and monetization separately
Copyright can interrupt a technically healthy stream
A stream can meet encoder settings and still be interrupted if its footage or audio matches third-party material. Use media you created or have permission to broadcast, and ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting when licensed material is being matched.

Monetization is not assured for a rain loop
YouTube’s monetization rules apply to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 clarification says repetitive or mass-produced content falls under its “inauthentic content” policy. Highly repetitive videos with little creative, educational, or other value may be ineligible. Reused content separately needs meaningful original commentary, substantial modification, or educational or entertainment value. A static or minimally changed ambience loop therefore carries monetization risk, but that does not mean every rain stream is automatically ineligible. Having broadcast rights does not, by itself, settle monetization eligibility.

With OBS or another local encoder, you control the setup and can keep local recordings, but the computer, power, network, and encoder must remain available. A hosted service can run uploaded-video playback in the cloud instead, but you should still consider rights, archive needs, cost, and how you will monitor the stream. The available platform guidance does not establish that either approach is categorically more reliable or cheaper.

Troubleshoot common problems
You cannot start a live stream
Check that the channel is verified, live streaming is enabled, and there has been no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If the channel is not eligible, encoder settings will not resolve the restriction.
YouTube reports poor stream health or playback stalls
Check the upload connection and encoder output. Compare your selected H.264 bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for your resolution and frame rate; reduce bitrate or output quality if the connection cannot sustain it. Confirm CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and test with both sound and moving video.
The broadcast is interrupted or replaced by a placeholder
Review the footage and audio for third-party matches. Replace material you cannot broadcast, or contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting if you have a license. A successful encoder connection does not override live copyright enforcement.
The archive is missing or incomplete
If the session exceeded 12 hours, YouTube says it may not be captured at all. Keep sessions below that threshold when an automatic archive matters, and enable a local recording backup for material you need to retain.
The local 24/7 stream stops when you leave
A local encoder relies on the computer, power, connection, and encoder process staying available. Check those components and arrange a way to monitor and restart the stream; a short-session schedule or local recording does not itself keep the broadcast continuous.
