You can use a Raspberry Pi to loop a prerecorded university course and send it to YouTube Live, but the setup is not automatically reliable for 24/7 operation. Prepare the video, configure playback and streaming, and test the complete system—including power, network recovery, and automatic restart—before relying on it.

Before you start: choose the destination and check permissions

This guide uses YouTube Live as the example destination because YouTube publishes encoder settings and channel eligibility requirements. A university network or another platform may use a different ingest method and access-control system; confirm those details with its administrator before configuring the Pi.

Check with the university, lecturer, or recording owner that you have permission to rebroadcast both the course video and its audio. YouTube’s platform rules do not determine whether a particular recording is cleared for public or unlisted streaming. YouTube says, “All content in live streams must adhere to our Community Guidelines and Terms of Service.” See YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.

Prepare the Raspberry Pi

Install Raspberry Pi OS and plan storage

For a headless setup, Raspberry Pi lists boot media, a suitable power supply, and a network connection as requirements. Raspberry Pi OS Lite is command-line-only; Raspberry Pi recommends at least 8 GB of boot storage for Lite and 32 GB for desktop editions. These are OS boot-storage recommendations, not estimates for your course video: keep the recording’s size and any additional files in mind separately. See the Raspberry Pi getting-started documentation.

Use a power supply suited to the model

Match the supply to the specific Pi rather than assuming one recommendation applies to every generation. Raspberry Pi currently recommends a 27 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 5 and a 15 W USB-C supply for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and Raspberry Pi 400. Connected peripherals add to power demand, and voltage loss in a removable cable can matter. Raspberry Pi’s guidance is: “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply suitable for the Raspberry Pi model you’re powering.”

Set up a headless network connection

Connect the Pi to a network with enough stable upload capacity for the selected stream bitrate. A headless device does not need a monitor during normal operation, but you still need a way to configure it and inspect logs during setup and troubleshooting. Prefer a wired connection if one is practical; whichever connection you use, test it under the conditions in which the stream will run.

Prepare the course video and choose a playback approach

Check the media before streaming

  • Confirm the video plays from beginning to end on the Pi, including its audio track.
  • Check that the file is stored where the playback process can access it after reboot.
  • Choose the output resolution and frame rate based on the recording, destination settings, and what the Pi can sustain in an extended test.

Raspberry Pi OS includes VLC, and Raspberry Pi documents hardware-accelerated playback there. That makes VLC a possible playback route, not proof that a particular Pi can handle an entire encode-and-stream workload continuously. If the prepared file and streaming path allow it, try passing the video through without re-encoding first; performance for your specific hardware and destination is not established by the documentation.

Another option is FFmpeg. Its official documentation describes -stream_loop -1 as looping an input infinitely. The option handles repetition of the input; it does not by itself configure YouTube ingest, guarantee a stable stream, or arrange recovery after a process or network failure. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Configure YouTube Live for an encoder stream

Check channel eligibility and create the stream

YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Follow YouTube’s current live-stream setup flow to create the broadcast and obtain its stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with people who should not control the stream. YouTube’s setup requirements and current guidance are at YouTube Help.

Use the recommended ingest protocol and encoder settings

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder streams. Its guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video codecs, recommends constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio. For H.264, the recommended bitrates include:

Output format YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
4K at 30 fps 42 Mbps

YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. The figures above are platform encoder recommendations for the listed H.264 formats; they are not a guarantee of stream quality or evidence that your internet connection can sustain the bitrate. Choose a resolution and frame rate the Pi can produce reliably, then ensure the upload connection can sustain the selected bitrate with headroom. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings for the current settings that apply to your intended output.

Keep the stream key private and verify the destination

Enter the stream key in the streaming software or service that sends the video to YouTube. Before leaving the stream unattended, confirm that the intended broadcast receives video and audio and has the right visibility setting. If the course should be restricted to university members, verify that YouTube’s available visibility and access controls meet that requirement; do not assume that an encoder connection provides university-only access.

Make the Pi start again after a reboot or interruption

A looping command or open player is not a complete 24/7 operations plan. Configure the playback and streaming processes to start on boot, capture logs, and decide how you will detect a stalled stream. A service manager can restart a process after it exits, but process restart alone does not prove that the player has recovered, that the stream has reconnected to YouTube, or that audio and video are healthy.

  1. Start from a known-good manual run. Confirm the video loops and YouTube receives it before adding automatic startup.
  2. Configure boot startup and logging. Use your chosen process-management approach to start the streamer after networking is available and record errors. Verify the actual service configuration on your Pi; an example written for another system is not a tested recipe for your hardware.
  3. Reboot and verify. Restart the Pi and confirm the video, audio, and YouTube broadcast return without manual intervention.
  4. Test network recovery safely. Interrupt the network in a controlled trial, restore it, and check both the logs and YouTube’s incoming stream. Do not infer recovery from a process merely remaining active.
  5. Run an extended trial. Test the actual course file, output format, destination, network, cooling, power supply, and restart behavior for a sustained period before depending on continuous availability.

Official Raspberry Pi documentation covers setup, playback, and camera/network streaming examples, but a camera example is not a validated prerecorded-course-to-YouTube 24/7 deployment. No particular Pi model and course file are certified by those references for uninterrupted operation.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom What to check Practical next step
YouTube does not receive the stream Stream key, destination configuration, network access, and whether the streamer process is running Re-enter the current key securely, check the encoder logs, and verify the configured ingest protocol against YouTube’s guidance.
Video stutters or the connection drops Whether upload capacity can sustain the chosen bitrate; network stability; Pi performance during playback or encoding Test the connection and workload together. If needed, reduce output demands or try a prepared file and path that avoids re-encoding, then retest.
Video plays but audio is missing Whether the source has an audio track and the streaming output is configured for a supported audio codec Test the file’s audio locally and verify the encoder’s audio settings; YouTube lists AAC or MP3.
The stream does not return after a reboot Boot startup configuration, service logs, network readiness, and whether the stream key is available to the service Fix the startup dependency or credential configuration, reboot again, and verify the broadcast at YouTube.
A process restarts but the broadcast remains unhealthy Whether the streamer reconnected successfully and whether fresh video and audio are arriving Use platform status and logs to confirm a healthy incoming stream; do not treat a running process as proof of recovery.
The setup stops during a long run Power supply and cable, peripherals, cooling, storage availability, and sustained network conditions Inspect logs and hardware conditions, address the cause, and repeat an extended end-to-end test.

Compare the Pi with a cloud option

A Pi makes sense when you can leave and maintain a local device, your network can sustain the stream, and you are willing to monitor playback, logs, restarts, and updates. A hosted service can avoid keeping a computer and home connection responsible for playback, but it introduces a service account, current terms, and recurring cost. For either route, confirm that the destination and access model suit the course and that you have permission to rebroadcast it.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded recordings to YouTube. Upload the course recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot supports the video as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo says it does not re-encode or use quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. Check that the service’s current access controls and terms fit your course before using it. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start your free day.
