YouTube’s current event credentials are the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. The available technical guidance does not establish a current, tested FFmpeg command or encoding values, so this guide explains the verified workflow and how to avoid guessing those settings.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-stream restrictions.
- An FFmpeg-capable computer or server that can remain powered on and connected for the duration of the broadcast.
- The audiobook recording and any other broadcast material, with rights covering the planned live transmission and any archive.
- A prepared YouTube Live event, its server URL and a private stream key.
- A plan to watch for encoder, network and YouTube interruptions and to restart the feed when necessary.
YouTube’s current live-stream eligibility guidance says a channel must be verified, have no live-stream restrictions during the preceding 90 days, and be operated by someone at least 16 years old. First-time activation can take time, so check eligibility and activation in advance rather than scheduling a launch at the last minute.
Clear rights for the recording and the broadcast
Check the sound recording separately from the book
Permission to use the underlying story does not automatically give you permission to broadcast a particular audiobook recording. Confirm rights for the exact narration recording and text edition, along with any translation, adaptation, illustrations, music or other material included in the stream. A public-domain text alone does not establish that a modern recording is free to use.
Confirm live and archive rights
Check that your licence covers public transmission on YouTube, the intended territories and any saved copy you plan to keep available. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the creator to have the necessary rights for exploitation of the live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder and trigger a warning; unresolved matches can interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Ask the rightsholder about allowlisting and retain your permissions and licence details.
Prepare YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Confirm eligibility. In YouTube Studio, check that live streaming is available for your channel and that there are no restrictions that would block the event.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. Open Live Control Room and create an event using the encoder workflow. Choose its visibility deliberately: use a private or unlisted event for a controlled test, and make it public only when you are ready for viewers to find it.
- Copy the event credentials. Get the server URL and stream key shown for the event. YouTube uses these credentials to receive the encoder feed.
- Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, shared configuration file or support post. Anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your event. Use a placeholder when documenting a configuration and restrict access to the real value.
- Check the preview. Before inviting viewers, confirm that the event receives a picture and sound, that playback is continuous, and that the intended watch page is accessible at the visibility setting you selected.
Prepare an audiobook feed for FFmpeg
Decide what viewers will see
An audio-only audiobook still needs a video feed for a conventional YouTube Live broadcast. Prepare a simple static visual or slate that you have rights to use; check that it appears in the Live Control Room preview alongside the narration. If the recording is divided into files or you intend to repeat material, test the exact sequence before launch rather than assuming a playlist will loop cleanly for hours.

Set encoder values from the current event guidance
FFmpeg handles media input and output, but the available official FFmpeg documentation does not establish a production-ready command for this YouTube workflow, a reliable playlist-looping recipe, or a restart policy. The available material also does not establish current codec, bitrate, resolution, frame-rate or keyframe values for your event. Do not copy numbers from an unrelated setup or treat an unverified command as tested. Check the current encoder settings YouTube presents for the event and the current FFmpeg command-line documentation, then validate the complete configuration in a test stream before going public.
This means there is no copy-and-paste command here: a command that invents an ingest protocol, options or values would make the setup look more certain than it is. When you build your FFmpeg invocation, use the event’s server URL and private key in the appropriate output settings, and keep the key out of public logs and examples. Confirm that the audio and visual remain synchronized and that the feed reaches the event preview before relying on it.

Run the stream and plan for interruptions
- Start with a controlled test. Launch the configured FFmpeg process against a non-public event, check the preview, listen for gaps or distortion, and verify that the video slate remains visible.
- Watch the live status. Monitor both FFmpeg’s process output and the event in Live Control Room. A running local process does not by itself prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
- Keep the host and connection available. With a local computer, the machine must remain on and the network connection must remain available. Power loss, a computer restart, an FFmpeg exit or a network outage can stop the feed.
- Decide who responds to failure. Arrange to notice an encoder or connection failure and restart the process and event feed as needed. The available guidance does not verify a particular watchdog, reconnection command or automatic recovery behavior, so test any such mechanism rather than assuming FFmpeg will resume reliably on its own.
- Review the event after launch. Check the public watch page and Live Control Room during the broadcast, and confirm that viewers receive the expected audio and visual.
Set the audience accurately and understand the trade-offs
Choose the audience designation that accurately describes the content; do not use it as a way to change monetization. For an individual stream marked Made for Kids, YouTube lists live chat and live-chat donations, comments, the notification bell, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and personalized ads among the disabled features. Contextual ads may still appear. Make the choice with the resulting viewer and creator features in mind.
Monetization is conditional. YouTube says eligible monetized live streams may show pre-roll, display and mid-roll ads, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. Personalized ads are disabled on Made for Kids streams, so do not estimate revenue as though standard personalized advertising were available.

YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams and identifies repetitive or mass-produced material as inauthentic content. Owning the rights to an audiobook does not by itself guarantee monetization approval. If monetization matters, consider what original curation, production or other genuine value the channel provides, and check the current policy before launch.

YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not establish that one event longer than 12 hours will produce a complete, uninterrupted archive. If a saved replay matters, plan the event lifecycle around the documented under-12-hour behavior, verify the archive in Studio, and arrange subsequent events rather than promising viewers one continuous saved video.

A single long event favors uninterrupted viewing, but places more weight on monitoring and does not guarantee a complete archive. Planned shorter events require someone or something to start the next event and may interrupt continuity for viewers. YouTube’s help also states that a channel can have up to 10 active streams and a stream key up to 3 active streams simultaneously; account for those limits if you plan overlapping events or tests.

Cost and operating choices
With the FFmpeg approach, the operating burden includes keeping the chosen computer or server powered, maintaining a reliable network connection and responding to failures. The available information does not establish a hardware minimum or a VPS provider, price or recommendation. A hosted server may make remote operation possible, but it adds provider and network dependencies; a local always-on computer gives you direct control but still depends on your equipment and home connection.
