Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →You can use a Raspberry Pi to play a repeating schedule of cartoon files and send it to YouTube Live, but the Pi must both play the videos and keep an encoder connection running. Configure YouTube Live, choose a playback-and-encoding setup that suits your Pi and network, then test it under the real workload before leaving it unattended. YouTube does not endorse a particular Raspberry Pi app for this prerecorded 24/7 use case, and the available Pi encoding figures do not guarantee that a specific setup will run continuously.
Before you start: channel, rights, and equipment
Check YouTube Live access
Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restrictions from the preceding 90 days. Enable live streaming before your planned launch: first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions and live streaming tips.
Use cartoons you are allowed to broadcast
Use cartoons you own or have permission to broadcast, including any rights needed for your intended territory and monetization. A video being old, available online, or labelled for viewing does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. The rights status of a particular cartoon must be checked separately.
Gather the hardware
You need a Raspberry Pi, a compatible power supply and microSD card, an internet connection, and cartoon files stored locally or on storage accessible to the Pi. Ethernet can make the network connection more predictable, but it does not guarantee stream stability. Choose accessories compatible with your board and build; the board alone is not a ready-to-stream kit.

- Includes Raspberry Pi 5 with 2.4Ghz 64-bit quad-core CPU (8GB RAM)
- Includes 128GB Micro SD Card pre-loaded with 64-bit Raspberry Pi OS, USB MicroSD Card Reader
- CanaKit Turbine Black Case for the Raspberry Pi 5

Configure YouTube Live and get the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule a live stream and retrieve the current server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Enter the URL and key in the encoder you choose for the Pi.
- Use the preview and stream-health indicators in Studio during setup. Do not treat a successful connection alone as proof that video and audio are correct.
Follow the current encoder workflow in YouTube’s instructions; interface labels and settings may change.
Choose a playback and encoding approach
The Pi needs a playback pipeline that can repeat the authorized cartoon files, provide audio if needed, encode the output, and send it to YouTube. The available guidance does not establish a single current, officially recommended Raspberry Pi application for this exact job, so use software you can configure and support rather than relying on an unverified command as a guaranteed setup.

Account for the Pi model’s encoder path
Raspberry Pi’s published comparison documents a Pi 4 configuration using the hardware H.264 encoder and Pi 5 configurations using software encoding. The Pi camera documentation also describes low-latency tuning and says Pi 5 can achieve 1080p30 in that camera-streaming context. These are not benchmarks of a looped cartoon playlist with audio, RTMPS, and uninterrupted operation. The right choice depends on the operating system, application, resolution, frame rate, and sustained workload.
See Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance note and rpicam-vid documentation. Test your actual pipeline instead of assuming that either model is universally better.

Set YouTube-compatible stream settings
For standard SDR streaming, YouTube recommends RTMPS, H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. Its published H.264 bitrate recommendations include these examples:
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
These are YouTube recommendations, not a guarantee that a Raspberry Pi can encode every source at that output. Start with a resolution and frame rate your chosen software path can sustain. YouTube advises leaving roughly 20% upload headroom: measure available upload speed rather than download speed, and include a backup stream in the bandwidth calculation if you configure one. Check the current encoder settings and bitrate guidance before launch.

Backed by a large global community, you can easily find guides, technical support and shared projects online
Test the complete loop before relying on it
- Start the playlist and confirm that files advance and repeat as intended.
- Check the YouTube Studio preview for image, audio, sync, and unintended gaps or overlays.
- Observe stream health while the Pi is encoding and uploading. Verify that the measured upload remains adequate for the chosen bitrate and headroom.
- Test what happens if the network drops or the encoder process stops. Confirm how your selected software behaves on reconnect; do not assume it will recover automatically.
- Run the setup long enough to expose workload or stability problems before treating it as unattended. YouTube recommends advance testing and continuous monitoring of audio and video quality.
For YouTube’s operational guidance, see Streaming tips and YouTube live streaming tips.
Choose between one long broadcast and shorter sessions
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24-hour broadcast does not meet that stated condition, so if automatic replay archiving matters, plan shorter sessions and verify current archive behavior in Studio. Shorter sessions add restart and scheduling work; a single long session avoids those planned restarts but does not qualify for the stated under-12-hour archive condition. See YouTube’s encoder stream guidance.

Troubleshooting common problems
- Live streaming is not available yet: enable it ahead of time and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. Check Studio for channel restrictions.
- YouTube does not receive a signal: recheck that the encoder has the current server URL and stream key for the intended stream. Keep the key private, and replace it in the encoder if you change it in Studio.
- Stream health warns about the connection: measure upload speed, reduce output bitrate or resolution if needed, and preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom. Do not base the decision on download speed.
- Video stutters or the Pi struggles: lower resolution or frame rate and retest the full workload. Published encoder capabilities do not establish performance for your player, files, audio mix, and operating system together.
- Audio or picture is wrong: inspect the Studio preview and the playback pipeline, then test again before leaving the stream unattended.
- The stream stops after a network or process failure: test reconnect behavior and recovery in advance. The available Pi guidance does not establish that a chosen playback application will restart or reconnect automatically.
- No automatic replay appears: check the session duration and current Studio archive behavior. YouTube’s stated automatic archive condition applies to streams under 12 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you do not want the Pi and home connection to be responsible for keeping the stream alive, StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
