OBS does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime: the computer, connection, encoder, and YouTube session all need monitoring and a recovery plan. The setup below covers the stream, sustainable settings, testing, and the archive limitation that matters most for a 24/7 broadcast.
Before you set up OBS
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions within the preceding 90 days. Check eligibility and enable live streaming before planning the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend preparing an encoder stream ahead of time.
- Prepare the ASMR video and audio feed you intend to broadcast. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers technical settings, not ASMR microphone technique or required equipment; choose a microphone and room setup for your source and budget, then test the actual sound.
- Use a computer that can encode the chosen video settings continuously, and a reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity. A wired Ethernet connection is a reasonable option for a fixed setup, but it does not guarantee uptime.
- Decide whether uninterrupted ambience or separate YouTube archives matter more. A single stream intended to run 24/7 is much longer than YouTube’s archive threshold, so plan for a separate local recording if you need a copy.
Create the YouTube encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and select the encoder workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. YouTube describes the key as the credential that identifies where the encoder sends its feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or share it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Make sure the stream is accessible from the channel and watch pages, and schedule or announce it if viewers need to know when to tune in. YouTube recommends setting up the encoder stream ahead of the event.

Configure OBS for a sustainable stream
Video, protocol, and bitrate
Use a protocol and encoder supported by YouTube’s current guidance: RTMP or RTMPS, with H.264, H.265, or AV1 for the listed workflow. YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; do not set the interval above four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations are 10 Mbps at 1080p/30 fps and 12 Mbps at 1080p/60 fps. The corresponding AV1 or H.265 recommendations are also 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that your computer or connection can sustain them. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Choose the resolution and frame rate that fit your content and available upload capacity. For a mostly still ASMR scene, 30 fps may be a suitable starting target; use 60 fps only if the visual content benefits from it and your system and connection can sustain the higher target. If you cannot reliably hold the recommended bitrate, lower the output target rather than running at a setting your connection cannot maintain.

Upload headroom
Run an upload-speed test on the connection the streaming computer will actually use. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Shared networks can reduce the bandwidth available to your stream, so avoid treating a speed-test result from an idle network as a guaranteed sustained rate. Audio
For stereo audio, YouTube’s listed encoder guidance recommends a 128 Kbps audio bitrate and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. In OBS, select the audio source you intend to use and confirm that it is present in the stream mix. Listen to the preview during testing for clipping, unwanted noise, silence, or an unbalanced level; the right microphone placement and gain depend on your room and source.

Test before going live
- Start with the intended ASMR content, not a silent placeholder. YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the real broadcast.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before directing viewers to the stream. Confirm that both picture and sound arrive as expected.
- Monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. If the connection is unstable, reduce the video target or bitrate and test again.
- Check the local recording, if enabled, to verify that it is being written and that the file is usable. YouTube’s tips also recommend checking local archive files.
- Test what happens if the primary encoder or its network connection fails. YouTube recommends testing backup-encoder failover; the level of redundancy required depends on how important continuous availability is to you.
Passing a short test confirms only that the setup worked during that test. It does not establish that a computer, home connection, or encoder will remain online indefinitely.
Plan for the 24/7 archive limitation
YouTube says: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” A stream that runs continuously for 24 hours is 1,440 minutes long; YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Do not rely on the YouTube replay as the archive of a 24/7 broadcast. The archive guidance is at YouTube’s live-stream archive page.

If you need a recording, make a separate local recording and check that the file is growing and intact. If you need YouTube archives for individual sessions, use shorter scheduled broadcasts rather than one uninterrupted stream, and choose session lengths around your content and monitoring capacity. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance is not a promise that a replay will be preserved indefinitely.
Keep the broadcast monitored and recoverable
A 24/7 stream is an operating process, not just an OBS setting. Arrange for a person to check stream health, audio, video, and local recording on a schedule. Decide in advance who can restart the encoder, restore the connection, or create a replacement stream if the session ends. Keep the stream key secure, and verify any backup-encoder or failover procedure before depending on it. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing failover, but its cited guidance does not establish an OBS watchdog or a guaranteed automatic recovery method.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube shows no incoming feed: Check that OBS is using the stream URL and key from the correct Live Control Room stream, then confirm the encoder is started. If the key was exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Stream health reports connection problems: Check the actual upload connection and competing network use. Lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate until the encoder can sustain the stream with the recommended headroom.
- Preview has video but no ASMR audio: Confirm the intended audio source is active in OBS and included in the mix. Check levels and listen to the preview before sending viewers to the stream.
- Picture or audio stutters: Check stream-health messages, system load, and network use. Reduce the output target if the encoder or connection cannot maintain it; retest under conditions similar to the real broadcast.
- The continuous stream has no complete YouTube replay: This is consistent with YouTube’s warning that streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured. Use a separate local recording for the archive, or schedule shorter sessions if individual YouTube replays are important.
- The stream stops while nobody is watching the computer: OBS on a local computer depends on that computer and its connection staying operational. Check power, system sleep settings, network reliability, and the recovery plan; none of these settings alone guarantees 24/7 service.
