To avoid unintended black bars, set the encoder’s output canvas and stream resolution to 16:9, and make sure each playlist video is framed for that same shape. YouTube recommends avoiding padding or black bars baked into the video itself. Test the complete playlist in a private or unlisted stream before going public.

Why black bars appear on a YouTube live stream

Black bars usually come from a mismatch between the video’s shape and the frame in which it is being shown. A 16:9 output frame cannot make a differently framed source fill the screen without either leaving empty space or cropping part of the picture. Bars may also already be embedded in the source video as visible black pixels.

YouTube’s standard aspect ratio for its computer player is 16:9, but the player adapts to videos with other aspect ratios. YouTube advises: “For best results, avoid adding padding or black bars directly to your video.” (YouTube Help: Video resolution & aspect ratios.)

Set a 16:9 encoder output

Choose a 16:9 output resolution that your source material and encoder can handle reliably. YouTube lists these standard 16:9 resolutions, among others:

Resolution Common label Aspect ratio
1920 × 1080 1080p 16:9
1280 × 720 720p 16:9

YouTube also lists 7680 × 4320, 3840 × 2160, 2560 × 1440, 854 × 480, 640 × 360, and 426 × 240 as 16:9 resolutions. The best choice is not automatically the largest: use a size your encoder can sustain and your source can meaningfully support. See YouTube’s resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

Prepare every playlist item for the frame

Check whether bars are part of the source

Inspect each file, not just the playlist preview. If black bars are already visible inside the video picture, changing the live output resolution will not remove them: those pixels are part of the image being streamed. Reframe or crop the source beforehand, or use the encoder’s fit/fill option if it provides one.

Choose between showing all of the picture and filling the frame

When a clip’s aspect ratio differs from 16:9, a fit-style scale can preserve the whole image but leave unused space; a fill-style scale can cover the frame but crop edges. Check that important text, faces, and other details remain visible if you crop. Scaling controls and their names vary by encoder, so consult that encoder’s current documentation rather than assuming a particular menu path.

Check transitions and mixed-format clips

A playlist may contain videos with different aspect ratios or resolutions. Preview each item, including the transition between clips, to make sure the encoder applies the intended framing consistently. Do not assume that a setting applied to one source will behave the same way for every playlist item.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live and test

  1. Set up the live stream in YouTube Studio. Create or open the stream and use its stream key in the encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow supports software encoders and standalone hardware encoders; see Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings.
  2. Set the encoder’s output canvas and resolution to 16:9. Use a supported 16:9 size, such as 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720, and check that the encoder is not padding a source that already matches the canvas.
  3. Preview the whole playlist. Inspect every clip and transition in the encoder preview and YouTube Live Control Room. Look for embedded bars, unexpected cropping, or changes in scaling.
  4. Run a private or unlisted test when appropriate. Confirm that the picture and audio arrive as expected before broadcasting publicly. YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” (Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.)
  5. Monitor the live preview and stream health. Check picture and audio quality and review any error messages while the stream is running. YouTube automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats for viewers, but that does not correct bars already baked into the source.

YouTube’s live streaming tips also recommend testing and monitoring the stream. The available YouTube guidance does not specify one universal set of menu names for encoder scaling: those controls depend on the software or hardware you use.

Troubleshoot black bars

  • Bars remain in one clip, even in the local file: They may be embedded in the source. Reframe or crop that video, or choose a fill/crop option in the encoder and check what it cuts off.
  • Bars appear around a source that should be 16:9: Check that the encoder canvas and output are both 16:9 and that no padding or border is being added.
  • Only some playlist items have bars: Those items may have different aspect ratios, or the encoder may scale sources differently. Inspect each item and adjust its framing where needed.
  • The preview looks right but the live output does not: Compare the encoder preview with YouTube Live Control Room and run another private or unlisted test. Check the encoder’s current documentation for how its preview relates to its actual output.
  • A clip fills the frame but important content is missing: The fill/crop choice may be cutting off the edges. Switch to a fit-style presentation or reframe the source so the important content sits inside the crop area.
