To loop a prerecorded gameplay video as a 4K, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, send it through a software encoder that can repeat the file, or use a cloud service built for continuous prerecorded streams. YouTube receives the live feed; the encoder or service—not YouTube itself—must handle the repeating. Set the encoder to a supported format and bitrate, then test and monitor the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

Choose how the recording will loop

There are two practical approaches: run playback and encoding on a computer you control, or use a cloud service so a local computer does not have to remain on. In either case, the playback workflow must repeat the recording or cycle through a playlist and deliver a stable live feed to YouTube.

Local software encoder

YouTube supports encoder-based streaming using software or standalone hardware. For an existing gameplay recording, use software that can play the file continuously and send its output to YouTube. The computer, playback software, encoder, and network connection all become part of the always-on path. Confirm that the specific software can loop the file; YouTube’s encoder setup does not itself add a loop switch.

Cloud streaming

A cloud service can keep the playback and stream running without your home computer staying on. YouTube’s verified encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded streams, including 4K at 30 or 60 fps. The directory also lists AWS Elemental MediaLive, a broadcast-grade service supporting up to 4Kp60 HEVC; that may be more complex than a solo creator needs. Check each provider’s current capabilities, limits, and pricing before choosing.

Configure YouTube for 4K60

YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends the following ingest bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps. These are encoder-side recommendations, not a promise that viewers will receive 4K; their playback quality also depends on YouTube processing and the viewer’s device and connection.

Video codec Listed minimum Recommended bitrate
AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps
H.264 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS ingest, and recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to YouTube. Its guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.

By default, YouTube automatically detects the incoming resolution and frame rate. If you need to select them manually in Live Control Room, use a custom stream key and enable manual settings. A stream key lets the encoder send video to the correct YouTube stream, so treat it as secret: do not publish or share it, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.

For 4K, YouTube does not offer its low-latency option; the stream uses normal latency. Plan accordingly if viewers expect close-to-real-time chat interaction.

Set up, test, and start the loop

  1. Prepare the recording. Confirm it plays from beginning to end and that the loop point will not produce an unwanted pause, black frame, or abrupt audio cut. If using a playlist, check the order and transitions. Test footage with motion and audio representative of what you intend to stream.
  2. Create or select the YouTube live event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream. Choose encoder streaming, then copy the stream key for that event. Keep the key private.
  3. Set the encoder output. Select RTMPS where available, a supported video codec, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, 60 fps, and the 2160p output your source and encoder can sustain. Use the bitrate recommended for the chosen codec in the table above. Enter the event’s stream key into the encoder.
  4. Enable repeat in the playback workflow. Set the software or cloud service to loop the recording or playlist. YouTube receives the encoder feed; it does not make a one-time file repeat automatically.
  5. Preview before going live. Start the encoder feed and check the Live Control Room preview, stream health, picture, motion, and audio before starting the public event. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream.
  6. Monitor the running stream. Watch Live Control Room health messages and check that both video and audio remain correct. If your workflow saves a local archive, YouTube’s operational tips also recommend confirming the file is valid and its size continues to grow.

Rights and channel considerations

Before looping gameplay, confirm that you have the rights needed for the game footage, commentary, and any music or other audio in the recording. The technical ability to stream a file does not establish permission to rebroadcast it. YouTube’s copyright and monetization decisions depend on the content and applicable rules; do not assume that a recording is safe to reuse simply because it was previously uploaded or contains gameplay.

A continuous stream also needs an operating plan. Decide who will respond if the source stops, the network fails, the encoder crashes, or YouTube raises a rights concern. Testing and monitoring can reveal problems, but they do not guarantee uninterrupted operation or automatic recovery.
