What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can stream a local 4K 60fps video file to YouTube Live with OBS Studio: add it as a Media Source, configure the output and encoder, then send the stream to YouTube using the stream URL and key from Live Control Room. A 10-bit file is not automatically an HDR stream. For HDR, the encoder and color metadata must also be configured for YouTube’s HDR requirements.
Decide whether you want SDR or HDR
“10-bit” describes the source’s bit depth; it does not by itself mean the live broadcast will be HDR. You can stream a 10-bit file as SDR. If your intended live output is HDR, YouTube’s guidance calls for HEVC (H.265) and compatible HDR signaling, including BT.2020 primaries and appropriate transfer and matrix characteristics. Configure these to match the actual source rather than simply toggling HDR for an SDR file. YouTube’s HDR live-streaming guidance also notes that the device must support the relevant encoding format.
SDR is the simpler configuration. Choose HDR only when the file is actually HDR, your encoder supports the required settings, and you can verify the result on an HDR-capable playback device.
Prepare the YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream.
- Copy the current stream URL and stream key into the encoder’s streaming settings. Treat the key like an account credential: do not share or publish it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains how an encoder sends video to YouTube.
- Check the selected protocol and key configuration in Live Control Room, especially if you plan to use HDR. YouTube documents RTMP(S) and HLS paths for HDR; HLS has additional requirements described below.
Add the local video in OBS
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Select the local video file. OBS documents support for containers including MP4, TS, MOV and MKV; container support alone does not certify that a particular HDR profile will work correctly.
- Enable Loop if the file should repeat. Use the restart-on-activation option only if you want playback to restart when the source becomes active.
- Consider Hardware Decoding if it is available and appropriate for your system. Check that video plays smoothly and audio is present before going live.
OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes local-file playback, looping and hardware decoding. A capture card is not needed just to play a file stored on the computer.

Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate
Set the outgoing canvas/output to 3840 × 2160 and frame rate to 60 fps if that matches the intended broadcast and your system can encode it reliably. YouTube’s current English encoder-settings page, checked October 3, 2026, lists these 4K/2160p 60 fps ingest figures:
| Video codec | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| AV1 or H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps |
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not guaranteed viewer-side bitrates or a promise of identical quality on every device. YouTube transcodes live input into multiple output formats. Match the bitrate to the codec you actually select; do not treat either recommendation as universal. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Use CBR (constant bitrate).
- Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds, as YouTube recommends; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- YouTube’s listed live video frame rates go up to 60 fps.
The network connection must sustain the configured stream rate throughout the broadcast. YouTube recommends 20% upload bandwidth headroom; for example, apply that margin above your configured bitrate rather than choosing a connection whose upload capacity merely matches it. This is YouTube’s operational guidance, not a guarantee that a connection will be stable. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and stream health.
Configure the HDR path in OBS
For an HDR live stream, YouTube’s OBS instructions specify OBS 30.1 or later and a hardware HEVC encoder. They call for the Main 10 profile, P010 (4:2:0), and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG color space; YouTube recommends HLG. The exact labels and availability depend on the encoder and device, so verify that your hardware supports HEVC Main 10 rather than assuming every OBS installation or GPU does.

- Confirm the source’s HDR format and color characteristics.
- In OBS’s output/encoder settings, choose hardware HEVC and Main 10 if supported.
- Set the HDR pixel format to P010 (4:2:0) and select Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG to match the source and intended output.
- Check the stream’s HDR signaling and monitor the result in a representative test; do not use HDR settings to relabel SDR pixel values.
YouTube documents HDR setup over RTMP(S) as well as HLS. If using HLS, its requirements include an HLS stream key with manual resolution settings unchecked, TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist, HTTPS POST/PUT transport, and no byte-range mode. Follow the current instructions for your chosen encoder and protocol in YouTube’s HDR guide; HLS is not universally required for HDR.
Run a representative test before the broadcast
- Start a private or unlisted test using the same file, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio path planned for the real stream.
- Include representative movement and audio, as YouTube recommends, and check stream health and any Live Control Room messages.
- Watch the viewer-side result, including on an HDR-capable device if HDR is the goal. Confirm playback, audio sync, color and continuity through the parts of the file most likely to stress the system.
- Verify that the connection has the recommended upload headroom and remains stable for the duration of playback.
These steps synthesize OBS and YouTube documentation; they are not a claim that a particular file, computer or network has been tested.

Troubleshoot common problems
The stream is not 4K or 60 fps
- Check the OBS output resolution and frame rate, then confirm the encoder is sending the intended mode.
- Allow time for YouTube’s live transcode and check stream health. Viewer playback formats can differ from the ingest signal because YouTube creates multiple outputs.
Video stutters, drops frames or disconnects
- Compare the selected codec’s bitrate with YouTube’s matching 4K/60 recommendation and confirm the upload connection has headroom.
- Check OBS performance and the local file’s playback. If hardware decoding is enabled and playback is problematic, test with it disabled; OBS describes it as an option, not a universal fix.
HDR looks washed out, clipped or is not recognized
- Confirm that the file is genuinely HDR and that its metadata matches the OBS color-space and transfer-function settings.
- Verify HEVC Main 10, P010 and Rec. 2100 PQ or HLG support in the encoder and device. A 10-bit source alone does not establish HDR signaling.
- Test on an HDR-capable viewer device and check YouTube’s current HDR setup instructions for the selected protocol.
No sound or the file stops after one play
- Check the Media Source’s audio path and test playback before starting the stream.
- Enable Loop if continuous repeat is intended. If the source is activated again by scene changes, review the restart-on-activation behavior.
