First enable live streaming on an eligible, verified channel; then create a stream in YouTube Studio, enter its server URL and stream key in your encoder, check the preview, and go live. A 24/7 broadcast also needs a plan for rights, monitoring, interruptions, and archives: YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours, but its guidance does not promise how longer streams will be archived.
Before you start: check channel eligibility
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified, the creator must be at least 16, and the channel must have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. If this is the first time you enable live streaming, activation may take up to 24 hours. Check eligibility and turn on the feature before planning a launch or relying on a last-minute test. See YouTube’s live-streaming getting-started guidance and encoder setup instructions; platform requirements and labels can change.
Choose an encoder workflow for the ambience feed
YouTube offers mobile, webcam, and encoder workflows. For a prepared storm recording paired with a static or slowly changing visual, the encoder workflow is the relevant option. An encoder can be software on a computer or standalone hardware; YouTube’s encoder guidance lists OBS among verified tools but notes that listed products are not made by YouTube. A dedicated camera, microphone, audio interface, or hardware encoder is not a prerequisite when the feed is already prepared.
For a local setup, the computer running the encoder and its internet connection must stay available while the stream is running. Power or network interruptions can stop that feed. YouTube’s cited setup guidance does not prescribe a complete 24/7 failover design or a preferred architecture, so choose local or cloud operation based on how you will handle interruptions and monitoring.

Set up and start the YouTube livestream
- Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-stream setup flow and complete channel verification if needed. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create the stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- Connect the encoder. In the encoder’s streaming settings, choose the YouTube service if available, then enter the server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to your stream. Do not share it publicly.
- Prepare the storm program. Add the thunderstorm audio and the visual you have rights to use. Check that the audio plays continuously and that the visual is present. Use a loop or playlist only if the source files and their intended live and archived uses are cleared.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room. Check the picture, sound, and stream health before starting the public broadcast.
- Go live and verify access. Start the broadcast in the Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Open the watch page, and check that it can be reached from the channel and on a mobile device.
- End deliberately when needed. Stop sending content from the encoder and end the stream in Live Control Room as appropriate to the workflow. For a continuous channel, decide in advance how you will handle planned stops and restarts.
Use appropriate encoder settings and test the feed
YouTube’s general encoder guidance recommends CBR bitrate encoding, AAC or MP3 audio, and a keyframe frequency of two seconds. Use the resolution and bitrate appropriate to the source and your available upload capacity; do not assume a higher setting improves a recording whose source is lower quality. Confirm your encoder’s current YouTube profile and settings against YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guide.
YouTube’s HLS setup instructions describe a separate protocol configuration: transport-stream (TS) segments of one to four seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. HLS is an option for supported encoders, not a requirement for every ambience stream. Follow YouTube’s HLS setup guide only if you are configuring HLS.

Test before making it a 24/7 feed
YouTube recommends doing a test stream with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. For ambience, check that the storm bed is audible and stable, the visual is present, the preview looks correct, and viewers can reach the watch page. After going live, continuously monitor audio and video quality as YouTube advises in its live-streaming tips. A successful short test confirms the tested setup at that time; it does not establish uninterrupted operation for a day or longer.
Plan archives for a stream that runs all day
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise that a stream longer than 12 hours will be archived as one complete replay, so do not build an archive plan around an assumed full-day recording. Decide whether replay is important, account for the under-12-hour archive guidance, and confirm current platform behavior before relying on a longer broadcast for a complete archive. The encoder instructions do not establish what happens to every stream that exceeds 12 hours.

Clear the rights to thunder audio and visuals
You are responsible for having the rights needed to use every element of the live content. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions require creators to have necessary rights for exploitation of live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights and other permissions. That responsibility can apply to field recordings, compositions, sound effects, artwork, video, and other visual material.
- Use recordings and visuals you created, or obtain permission that covers the intended livestream and any archive or replay use.
- Keep copies of licenses and permission records so you can document what you are allowed to use.
- Do not assume natural thunder recordings are automatically copyright-free. YouTube’s guidance does not establish that exemption.
- If you have permission to use third-party material that is enrolled in Content ID, ask the rights holder whether your channel can be added to its allowlist.
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder; if the content continues, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A license alone may not prevent an interruption when the channel has not been allowlisted. See YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- Live streaming is not available yet: verify the channel and eligibility, check for restrictions in the previous 90 days, and allow up to 24 hours after first-time activation.
- No preview appears: confirm the encoder is sending to the correct server URL, that the stream key belongs to the stream you created, and that the encoder has actually started. Keep the key private.
- The preview works but the watch page does not: verify the broadcast has been started in Live Control Room and check access from the channel and a mobile device, as YouTube recommends.
- Audio or picture is missing or unstable: inspect the encoder input and output, check the source playback and connection, and monitor stream health. Re-test with the same audio and visual arrangement you intend to use.
- The stream is interrupted after a rights match: stop using the matched material unless you have permission; if licensed, ask the rights holder about Content ID allowlisting. Do not assume a license automatically prevents a live interruption.
- No complete 24-hour replay appears: YouTube’s cited guidance guarantees automatic archiving only for streams under 12 hours. It does not establish a complete archive outcome for a longer stream.
Monetization is a separate eligibility question
YouTube says creators in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a livestream, but that does not establish that a particular channel or looped ambience format qualifies. The cited encoder guidance does not settle how YouTube will assess repetitive or reused ambience content. Do not infer monetization eligibility simply from using an encoder or broadcasting continuously; check the current YouTube Partner Program and monetization policies for your channel and content.
