The safest inheritance plan separates discoverability from secrecy. While you are alive, create an inventory that tells your executor which wallets and assets exist, where the recovery materials are held, and how to restore them. Keep the seed phrase itself offline on durable media, with copies in separate controlled locations. Do not put the words in a will, email, cloud drive, screenshot, password-manager export, or ordinary notes file. For significant holdings, document a multisignature or threshold design—or use a qualified custodian—and have a lawyer familiar with digital assets confirm that your release process works under local law.

What a seed phrase is—and why inheritance planning depends on it

A seed phrase is the recovery credential for a self-custodied crypto wallet. The SEC Office of Investor Education and Assistance described it in a 2025 Investor Bulletin as “a random sequence of words that allows you to restore your crypto wallet if you lose it or your private key, or its hardware or software is damaged or corrupted.” Whoever has the words can generally reconstruct the wallet and move its assets; whoever does not have them may be unable to recover the funds even if the hardware device is sitting in front of them.

The device is replaceable. The backup words are decisive. Hardware wallets can be lost, damaged, reset, or discontinued, while a correctly recorded phrase can restore the wallet to a compatible replacement device. Recovery is not the same as ownership documentation: a will can identify an asset and authorize an executor, but it cannot itself recreate a self-custodied wallet. Your plan must therefore solve two separate problems:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Findability: the executor must learn that a wallet exists, identify the relevant networks and assets, and locate the recovery materials.
  • Confidentiality: nobody who should not control the funds must obtain the words before the planned release event.

Those goals conflict if you put the phrase in a broadly accessible legal or digital record. A good plan gives beneficiaries a map and procedure, not an exposed secret.

Start with an inventory that contains no secret words

Make a current inventory for your executor or fiduciary. Store it separately from the seed phrase and update it whenever you change a device, passphrase, address, custodian, or backup location. The inventory should describe what exists and how to proceed without reproducing the recovery credential.

Record each wallet and account

  • The wallet’s nickname and whether it is self-custodied, multisignature, threshold-based, or held by a custodian.
  • The hardware-wallet model or software wallet name, including any device-specific setup information an executor will need.
  • The blockchain networks and asset types held. Do not assume that a beneficiary will know which network an address uses.
  • Public addresses or extended public keys (xpubs) where appropriate for identification and balance checking. These are not substitutes for the private recovery words.
  • Whether an additional wallet passphrase is enabled. Record that a passphrase exists and where its separate instructions are held, but do not write the passphrase into a document that is meant to be widely accessible.
  • The physical locations of every seed or key share, described precisely enough for an executor to find them.
  • The names and contact details of the executor, fiduciary, or other person authorized to coordinate the release.

Add an explicit anti-scam warning

Write in the inventory that no website, text message, email, support agent, recovery service, or family member acting informally should ever request the seed words online. A legitimate device-recovery procedure requires entering the words only on the designated hardware device, not into a web form or computer keyboard.

Keep valuation and tax records separate

Give the executor acquisition dates, cost basis records, transaction history, and valuation information in a separate file or packet. Those records help with estate administration without exposing the wallet’s signing authority. Keep a note explaining where the records are stored and how often they are updated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store the phrase on durable, offline media

Write the words during wallet setup, verify spelling and order on the device, and then create a durable physical backup. Trezor’s setup guidance says the backup is the only way to recover the wallet, instructs users to write every word in exact order, and says never to enter the backup anywhere other than directly on the device. Ledger’s storage guidance recommends fireproof and waterproof metal, multiple copies, and separate secure locations. Stainless steel or titanium can provide better resistance to fire, water, and other disasters than paper.

Use at least two copies with different disaster profiles

Keep copies in separate controlled locations rather than placing them together. For example, one copy might be in a properly managed home safe and another in a different secure location. Separation protects against a single burglary, fire, flood, or other event destroying every copy. Each location should be known to the executor through the inventory, while access to the words remains restricted during your lifetime.

Do not create digital copies

  • No phone or computer screenshot.
  • No photograph sent to yourself or a relative.
  • No email, cloud-storage file, chat message, or ordinary notes entry.
  • No unencrypted text file or password-manager export.
  • No typing the words into a website, browser extension, support ticket, or connected computer.

Digital copies create additional points where malware, account compromise, backups, synchronization, or accidental sharing can expose the wallet. The recovery words should remain offline except when entered directly on the intended hardware device during a controlled restoration.

Choose a storage architecture that matches the estate

There is no single design that is best for every holding. Simplicity reduces operating mistakes, while distributing control can reduce the damage from one lost or stolen secret. Compare the trade-offs before deciding.

Option Main strength Main failure mode Best fit
Single hardware wallet with a metal backup Simple, inexpensive, and straightforward to explain One exposed phrase can be stolen; heirs may lack technical knowledge Smaller holdings and beneficiaries who can follow a documented recovery procedure
Shamir or other threshold backup Reduces dependence on one location or one person Lost shares, incompatibility, and greater recovery complexity Owners willing to document, maintain, and rehearse a more complex design
Multisignature wallet No single key can authorize a spend; roles can be separated A misunderstood quorum, incompatible software, or unavailable keyholder can lock funds Larger holdings with trained keyholders and a maintained operating plan
Qualified custodian May provide identity checks and a defined succession workflow Counterparty, fee, policy, and account-access risk Beneficiaries who need guided administration and accept dependence on an institution

When a simple single-key plan is appropriate

A single hardware wallet backed by two durable copies can be reasonable when the amount is limited, the beneficiary is capable of following instructions, and the owner can keep both copies secure. The plan still needs an inventory, a release procedure, and a rehearsal; a metal plate alone does not teach an heir how to identify the right network or restore the wallet.

When to consider threshold or multisignature control

Advanced designs are useful when a single stolen phrase would create unacceptable risk, when several people must approve a transfer, or when the owner wants geographic separation. The Bitcoin Estate Planning Standards 2025 address multisignature compatibility, threshold selection, and geographic distribution. They also imply the cost of complexity: every key share, quorum rule, software version, backup format, and succession event must be documented and maintained. A design that heirs cannot operate is not resilient in practice.

When a custodian may be preferable

A qualified custodian can offer an established identity-verification and succession process, which may help beneficiaries who do not want to restore a wallet themselves. That convenience comes with dependence on the institution’s solvency, policies, fees, security controls, and willingness to recognize the estate. Review the provider’s death, incapacity, beneficiary, and account-access procedures before transferring assets, and keep a copy of the relevant agreement with the inventory.

Write beneficiary instructions without revealing the phrase early

Prepare a plain-language instruction packet that explains what the beneficiary will encounter after a permitted release. The packet should be understandable to someone who has never used a hardware wallet, but it should not contain the seed words themselves.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Explain the wallet and its expected contents

  • Identify the wallet name, hardware model, supported networks, and the public addresses used for verification.
  • Explain that balances may appear only after the correct network and account type are selected.
  • State whether an additional passphrase is required and where its separately protected instructions are held.
  • List the executor or fiduciary who can authorize release and the legal event that triggers it.

Specify safe software practices

Tell the beneficiary to obtain wallet software only from the manufacturer’s official distribution channel, verify that the device and software match the inventory, and ignore unsolicited links or support messages. The words must be entered only on the hardware device. A site, application, or person asking for them through a browser, email, phone call, or chat should be treated as hostile.

Describe verification before any transfer

After restoration, the beneficiary should compare the displayed receiving addresses with the public addresses in the inventory and confirm that the expected assets and networks are present. Before moving a significant amount, make a small test transaction to a newly controlled address and verify receipt. The test is a way to confirm that the restored wallet, network, and destination are correct; it is not a reason to reveal the phrase to another person.

Use a controlled release process after death or incapacity

Do not place the seed phrase in a will or another document that may be filed, copied, or read by people who do not need immediate control. Instead, put the location and release conditions in the estate plan and keep the secret in a separately controlled arrangement. Possible mechanisms include a sealed release envelope, a safe-deposit process, or fiduciary-controlled storage, but local counsel should confirm that the chosen mechanism is legally accessible and does not create an unintended single point of failure.

  1. Establish authority. The executor or fiduciary verifies the death or incapacity event and confirms that the governing estate documents authorize access.
  2. Locate the inventory. The fiduciary searches the places where digital-asset records may exist: paper files, secure storage, email and devices, wallet applications, and family or adviser records. HMRC’s guidance to estate representatives specifically emphasizes this broad search.
  3. Retrieve the protected material. Follow the release instructions for the sealed envelope, safe-deposit arrangement, key shares, or custodian account. Record who accessed what and when.
  4. Restore in a controlled environment. Use a clean, compatible hardware device and official software. Enter the words only on the device, never into a connected computer or website.
  5. Verify before distributing. Confirm addresses, networks, balances, and any passphrase requirement. Preserve transaction and valuation records for the estate.
  6. Transfer or liquidate under authority. Follow the will, trust, beneficiary designation, court order, or other applicable instrument. Use a small test transaction before a large transfer and document the destination and approvals.

A legal document can identify the asset and authorize the executor, but it cannot restore a self-custodied wallet without the seed or the required signing quorum. Technical recovery and legal transfer are separate tasks that must both be completed.

Recovery procedure for a beneficiary

Include the following sequence in the instruction packet, adapted to the exact wallet documented in the inventory.

  1. Obtain a new or reset-compatible hardware device from a trusted source. Do not use a device supplied through an unsolicited message or an unknown intermediary.
  2. Install the wallet’s official software from the documented official channel. Check that the model and software correspond to the inventory.
  3. Select the option to restore an existing wallet, then enter each word in exact order on the hardware device. Do not type or paste the phrase into the computer.
  4. If the wallet uses an additional passphrase, enter it only through the device’s documented secure interface and use the separately protected instructions supplied by the executor.
  5. Select the documented networks and account types. Compare the resulting public addresses with the inventory.
  6. Check balances and transaction history. If an expected asset is missing, stop and verify the network, account type, and passphrase rather than trying random settings.
  7. Create a new destination wallet controlled by the beneficiary or estate, then send a small test amount and confirm receipt.
  8. After the test succeeds, complete the authorized transfer and preserve records for valuation and tax reporting.

Never improvise by entering the phrase into a web-based recovery form. Trezor’s published guidance is explicit: “Never enter your backup anywhere other than directly on your Trezor device.”

Document multisignature or threshold plans in operational detail

A multisignature wallet requires several keys to authorize a transaction; a threshold backup divides recovery material so that only a specified number of shares can reconstruct control. Both can reduce the consequences of one stolen key or one destroyed location, but both add coordination requirements.

KEYSTONE Crypto Seed Storage, Crypto Steel Capsule Metal Wallet, Cold Storage Backup, 24 Words Bitcoin Key Phrase Storage, Steel Plate, Compatible with Ledger, Trezor, KeepKey (Keystone Tablet Plus)
  • DURABLE AND INDESTRUCTIBLE: Made with grade 304 Steel, it's the long term solution to helping you safely store and backup your wallet’s seed phrase due to its resistance to corrosion. The various screws present in the tablet help protect it against deformation. It is also designed to have a fireproof threshold of house fires.

Record the quorum and every key location

State the required number of signatures or shares, the total number created, the wallet software and version family expected, and the public wallet descriptor or addresses needed for verification. Map each key or share to a physical location and identify the person responsible for it. The map should explain what happens if one keyholder dies, becomes incapacitated, or refuses to cooperate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plan succession and compatibility

Record how a replacement keyholder is appointed, how backups are checked, and which devices or applications can recover the wallet. Test the complete quorum with a small wallet before relying on it for estate assets. A threshold design can fail through a lost share, an incompatible implementation, or a beneficiary who does not understand the recovery order.

Separate knowledge as well as geography

Do not give one informal helper every key, share, location, and passphrase. Separate the people and places involved while ensuring that the executor can assemble the required quorum after the triggering event. The objective is controlled cooperation, not a collection of secrets that nobody can coordinate.

Rehearse the plan safely

Use a small test wallet to practice the exact actions your beneficiary will need. The rehearsal should cover locating the inventory, identifying the correct device and network, restoring the test wallet, checking addresses, and sending a small transaction. Do not expose the production seed to a computer, website, or third party merely to prove that the plan works.

After every material change—new hardware, a new passphrase, a different receiving address, a custodian change, a relocated backup, or a revised quorum—update the inventory and repeat the relevant test. Destroy obsolete paper or metal copies securely so that an old phrase cannot later be mistaken for the current one.

Common failure modes and fixes

Failure Why it happens Fix
The beneficiary knows a wallet exists but cannot find it No inventory or an outdated location map Maintain a separate inventory naming each wallet, backup location, executor, and update date
The only copy is destroyed All backups were kept in one room or one safe Maintain multiple durable copies in separate controlled locations with different disaster exposures
The phrase is stolen before death It was photographed, emailed, uploaded, or typed into a support site Keep it offline and enter it only on the hardware device; remove digital copies
The device works but the wallet appears empty Wrong network, account type, address set, or passphrase Follow the inventory, verify public addresses, and stop rather than guessing
A multisig wallet cannot spend The quorum, keyholder, or compatible software was not documented Record the quorum, descriptors, key locations, succession rules, and rehearse a test transaction
The custodian will not release funds The estate lacks required identity documents or the account policy changed Keep the account agreement and beneficiary instructions with the estate records and review them periodically
An executor follows a fake support message Scammers exploit the urgency of an inheritance Use only the contact details in the inventory and never disclose recovery words to support personnel

Legal, tax, and geographic limits

Rules for wills, trusts, safe-deposit boxes, fiduciary access, probate, incapacity, and digital assets vary by jurisdiction. A will or trust can direct who receives the asset and who may act, but it does not override a wallet’s cryptographic requirements. Ask a local lawyer or qualified fiduciary who understands digital assets to review the release mechanism, beneficiary wording, access to storage locations, and tax-record process.

Do not assume that a bank, safe-deposit provider, exchange, or custodian will recognize an informal note naming a beneficiary. Confirm the institution’s current procedure and keep the relevant account and contact information in the inventory. Treat any quoted service policy as changeable and review it after major life, legal, or account changes.

There is no authoritative inheritance-failure rate established here. A Bank of America Private Bank estimate from early 2025 placed permanently lost bitcoin at 2.3 to 3.7 million coins, or 11% to 18% of total supply, but that is a secondary estimate of loss, not a verified census of inheritance failures. It should not be used to predict the probability that a particular estate will lose access.

Practical implementation checklist

  • List every wallet, network, asset, device, public address, and custodian.
  • Mark whether an additional passphrase, multisignature quorum, or threshold share exists.
  • Write the recovery words in exact order and verify them on the device.
  • Create durable offline copies on suitable metal and place them in separate controlled locations.
  • Keep the words out of wills, email, cloud storage, screenshots, ordinary notes, and unencrypted exports.
  • Give the executor a location map, contacts, recovery sequence, anti-scam warning, and separate tax records.
  • Define the legal trigger and the people authorized to release each secret or key share.
  • Document quorum, succession, compatibility, and geographic distribution for multisignature or threshold designs.
  • Rehearse restoration and a small test transaction with a separate test wallet.
  • Review the plan after every hardware, passphrase, address, custodian, family, or legal change.
