Store NES, SNES, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and Game Boy Advance cartridges upright in a clean, shaded indoor space with steady, moderate conditions. Keep them off floors and away from humidity, temperature extremes, sunlight, dust, and pressure. Handle the plastic shell—not the edge connector—and keep contacts dry. For routine exterior dirt, Nintendo’s guidance is a soft cloth slightly dampened with water, followed by complete drying; solvents such as alcohol, benzene, and paint thinner should not be used.
Battery-backed games need an additional check: aging coin cells can stop retaining saves, and a leaking cell can damage the circuit board. A recurring inspection routine, sensible storage, and qualified battery replacement give your cartridges the best chance of remaining playable.
Why careful storage matters
A cartridge is a small object, but it combines several materials that age differently: a plastic shell, a printed label, a circuit board, plated edge contacts, and—on many save-enabled games—a coin-cell battery. Damage to any one of those parts can make a game unreliable even when the outside looks acceptable.

Moisture and dirt can interfere with the electrical connection between cartridge and console. Heat and cold can stress materials, while repeated environmental swings can be more damaging than a stable reading that is slightly away from an ideal target. Light fades labels and can discolor plastic. Dust settles on connectors and works into seams. Leaning stacks and heavy objects can deform boxes, labels, or shells over time.

Nintendo’s Game Boy and Game Pak precautions are straightforward: do not store the system or cartridges in humid places, on the floor, or where they collect dirt, dust, or lint; do not expose them to extreme heat or cold; and keep fingers, breath, moisture, and contamination away from the connectors. Museum collection practice adds protection from light, pollutants, pests, particulates, and rapid changes in temperature or relative humidity.
Choose a stable room before buying containers
Use an interior room or closet
The safest location is an indoor room with relatively steady conditions. An interior closet or cabinet away from exterior walls and windows usually changes more slowly than a garage, attic, basement, or sunlit room. Keep the collection away from radiators, heating and cooling vents, fireplaces, and appliances that produce heat.
Do not place cartridges directly on a basement floor, even if the room normally feels dry. Floor-level air is where dust and accidental water reach the collection first. A shelf or cabinet raises the games above minor spills and reduces exposure to dirt carried along the floor.
Aim for moderate, steady relative humidity
The Game Boy Museum recommends roughly 30–50% relative humidity for its storage guidance. That range is practical collector advice, not a Nintendo specification for every cartridge family. Use it as a target for the room rather than a reason to make constant adjustments. A stable reading is generally preferable to large swings caused by repeatedly switching a humidifier, dehumidifier, or air conditioner.
Place a digital hygrometer in the same room as the collection so you can see the conditions where the cartridges actually sit. Readings from another room, a closed box, or a window ledge may not represent the storage area. If the number moves sharply with weather or heating cycles, first improve the location: move the cabinet away from windows, vents, damp walls, and floors before adding equipment.
Keep light and pollutants low
Store cartridges out of direct sunlight. A shaded cabinet, opaque bin, or closed case limits ultraviolet exposure and reduces dust. Museum storage cabinets are designed to limit light, particulates, pollutants, pests, and environmental fluctuation; a household cabinet cannot provide laboratory control, but the same priorities are useful at home.
Avoid locations near cooking fumes, smoke, solvents, or strong household chemicals. Do not store games beside an open window where outdoor dust and moisture enter, or in a workshop where sawdust and airborne particles can settle on connectors.
Store cartridges upright and supported
Loose cartridges and boxed games should stand upright like books, with enough support that they do not lean. A row that continually tilts puts uneven stress on shells, labels, and boxes. Use dividers, snug rows, or a shelf lip to keep the group vertical without squeezing it.

Avoid tall horizontal stacks. The bottom items carry the weight of everything above them, and labels or cardboard boxes can rub, crease, or bow. If a horizontal stack is unavoidable for a short period, keep it low, distribute weight evenly, and move the games to supported upright storage as soon as possible.
Upright storage does not mean tightly packed storage. Leave enough room to remove one cartridge by its shell without scraping neighboring labels. Original boxes should fit without forcing flaps or corners against a divider. Protective cases are useful when they support the cartridge vertically, reduce dust, and do not abrade the label.
Compare practical storage methods
| Storage method | Advantages | Risks or limitations | Good fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open shelving | Fast access and easy visual inspection | More dust and light exposure; cartridges can lean unless supported | Frequently played games in a shaded, low-dust room |
| Lidded plastic bin | Reduces dust and light; easy to move as a group | Can hide condensation, battery leakage, or developing corrosion; loose cartridges may shift | Collections stored in a stable room when cartridges are separated and checked periodically |
| Display cabinet | Blocks much of the dust and light while keeping games visible; shelves can provide upright support | Quality and sealing vary; a cabinet in a damp or sunlit room does not solve the underlying problem | Organized collections that need display and protection |
| Individual cartridge cases | Separates labels and shells, limits abrasion, and helps maintain upright rows | Extra cost and space; cases must fit without pressure and should still be inspected | Valuable, boxed, or frequently handled cartridges |
Choose based on dust and light protection, ventilation, condensation risk, support against leaning or stacking pressure, access frequency, and whether original packaging fits without rubbing. No container compensates for a damp garage, a hot attic, or a window sill.
Handle the shell, not the connector
Always pick up a cartridge by its plastic shell. The edge connector is the exposed row of contacts that mates with the console. Finger oils, moisture, and dirt can transfer to those contacts and interfere with insertion or electrical continuity.
Before inserting a cartridge, look for foreign material, residue, corrosion, or obvious damage. Do not blow on the connector: Nintendo specifically warns against breathing on it, and moisture from breath can remain on the contacts. Never insert a wet or visibly contaminated cartridge into a console, because contamination can transfer to the console connector as well.
Keep cartridges capped or enclosed when they are not in use, but do not trap a visibly damp cartridge in a closed container. Let it dry completely in a clean, shaded place before returning it to storage.
Clean exterior dirt conservatively
Nintendo’s cited Game Pak cleaning method is deliberately simple. For dust or grime on the outside, use a soft, clean cloth slightly dampened with water, then allow the cartridge to dry completely. The cloth should be damp, not wet enough to drip or release liquid into openings.

Deal with battery-backed saves before they fail
Many save-enabled Game Boy cartridges and other vintage games use a small coin cell to preserve saved data when the console is off. These batteries eventually become exhausted. An exhausted cell can end battery-backed saves; a leaking cell can corrode traces and components on the board, turning a straightforward replacement into a board repair.
Make battery inspection part of a recurring collection routine, especially for games whose saves matter. Look for a swollen or damaged shell, residue, corrosion, or an unusual smell, and stop using a suspect cartridge until it has been assessed. A cartridge that still boots is not proof that its battery is healthy.
Battery replacement often requires soldering and must be done without interrupting power for collections where preserving the existing save is important. If you do not have board-repair experience, use a qualified technician. Nintendo warns that leaking batteries can cause injury and damage; do not puncture, heat, short, or improvise with a damaged cell.
Keep battery-backed cartridges separate from cartridges awaiting inspection. A small note in your catalogue can record which games contain a battery, when they were last checked, and whether a replacement or corrosion assessment is pending. No authoritative service-life figure is established here for cartridge batteries, shells, labels, connector plating, or save data, so do not rely on a promised number of years.
Build a repeatable preservation routine
1. Survey the storage location
Check for dampness, condensation, heat sources, direct sun, dust accumulation, pests, and floor-level exposure. Move the collection before buying accessories if the room itself is unsuitable.
2. Measure the room
Place a hygrometer near the cabinet and observe whether conditions remain broadly around the Game Boy Museum’s 30–50% RH guidance. Treat the reading as a trend, not an absolute Nintendo rule.
3. Prepare the shelf or case
Clean the storage surface, let it dry, and install dividers or supports so cartridges stand upright without leaning. Keep original boxes from rubbing against rough edges.

4. Sort before shelving
Separate loose cartridges, boxed games, and items needing repair. Put visibly dirty, damp, corroded, or battery-damaged cartridges aside for cleaning or professional assessment rather than mixing them with clean stock.

5. Clean only what needs cleaning
Use the water-dampened soft-cloth method for exterior dirt. Keep moisture away from openings and connectors, and wait for complete drying.
6. Record battery status
Mark save-enabled games for periodic inspection. If a cell is exhausted, leaking, or surrounded by corrosion, stop normal play until the cartridge has been evaluated.
7. Recheck after environmental changes
Inspect the collection after a move, a heating or cooling-system change, a leak, or unusually humid weather. Look for new dust, condensation, label lifting, shell distortion, or corrosion before returning games to regular use.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat to do when a cartridge has a problem
The game suddenly stops booting
Remove it by the shell, inspect the connector for dirt or corrosion, and check that the cartridge is completely dry. Do not immediately apply solvent or blow into the slot. If the problem remains, have the cartridge and console connector assessed rather than repeatedly forcing insertion.
You find corrosion or battery residue
Quarantine the cartridge from the rest of the collection. Avoid spreading residue with a cloth or inserting it into a working console. Battery leakage can damage the board, so a technician should inspect the cell, traces, and components.
A label is lifting or a box is bowing
Remove pressure from neighboring items and return the game to supported upright storage away from heat and light. Do not press a lifting label flat with liquid, adhesive, or heat; those actions can worsen the damage.
The room is outside the suggested humidity range
First correct the location and reduce swings. Move games away from damp walls, windows, floors, and vents, then monitor the new position. The 30–50% figure is a museum recommendation for practical storage, not a reason to expose cartridges to rapid humidity changes.

Frequently asked questions
Should NES and SNES cartridges be stored vertically?
Yes. Store loose and boxed cartridges upright with support so they do not lean. Avoid tall stacks that put pressure on labels, shells, or cardboard packaging.
Is 30–50% relative humidity a Nintendo requirement?
No. That range comes from Game Boy Museum collector guidance. Nintendo warns against humid places and temperature extremes but does not establish a universal humidity specification for every cartridge.
Do I need an individual plastic case for every cartridge?
No. A supported shelf or suitable lidded container can work. Individual cases are useful when they reduce dust and label abrasion while keeping cartridges upright, but they cannot correct a damp or overheated room.
Can I clean Nintendo contacts with alcohol?
Nintendo’s Game Pak guidance says not to use alcohol, benzene, paint thinner, or other solvents. For routine dirt, clean the exterior with a soft cloth slightly dampened with water and keep liquid away from the connector.
How can I tell whether a Game Boy cartridge battery is safe?
You cannot confirm battery condition from booting alone. Include save-enabled games in a recurring inspection, and seek qualified service for an exhausted, leaking, swollen, or corroded cell.
How long will a vintage cartridge last in storage?
No authoritative lifespan figure is established for the shell, label, connector plating, or save battery. Good storage reduces avoidable stress, but age and the condition of each individual cartridge still matter.
