The safest setup combines a stable indoor room, an enclosed dust barrier, and storage that supports each miniature by its base without touching painted surfaces or fragile projections. For transport and compact storage, a magnetic tray or case can eliminate foam compression; for long-term display, use a closed cabinet away from windows. Keep the room near 50% relative humidity and 68–72°F (20–21°C) as a conservation reference, let varnish cure before packing, and handle models by their bases.
What damages painted miniatures in storage?
Paint usually fails in storage for mechanical or environmental reasons rather than because the miniature is simply old. Pressure from foam, neighboring models, or a lid can rub raised details and edges. A loose sword, banner, antenna, or other projection can snap when a model shifts. Dust bonds to textured paint and is difficult to remove without disturbing the finish. Unstable humidity and temperature can contribute to surface deformation, splitting, mold growth, or flaking, while light damage accumulates over time.
The Metropolitan Museum of Art warns that “Cotton batting is not suitable for storage of unframed miniatures because the fibers may catch and dislodge partially detached paint flakes.” That warning applies to any fibrous padding that drags across a painted surface. Support the base or plinth instead, and leave the painted body and projections clear of contact.
Location matters as much as the container. The Canadian Conservation Institute identifies basements and attics as risky because they experience temperature swings, relative-humidity extremes, and greater leak or flood exposure. Garages, rooms beside plumbing, and areas directly above or below heating equipment have similar practical risks.
Set up the room before choosing a case
Choose a stable indoor position
- Keep models in a normally occupied indoor room rather than a basement, attic, garage, or shed.
- Place the case away from windows, radiators, heating vents, exterior doors, pipes, and known leak paths.
- Keep the case off the floor, especially on concrete or near a wall that can become damp.
- Leave enough space around the case for air circulation and for removing shelves or trays without striking models.
A closed cabinet or box reduces dust and airborne pollutants. The U.S. National Park Service notes that museum storage cabinets provide superior protection from temperature and relative-humidity fluctuations, dust and particulates, light, gaseous pollutants, and pests. A glass door is useful for visibility, but it still admits light, so an enclosed cabinet is not a license to place models in direct sun.

Use humidity and temperature as practical targets
The Met care guide gives a reference of about 50% relative humidity and 68–72°F (20–21°C) for avoiding conditions associated with deformation, splitting, mold growth, and paint flaking. Treat these figures as a conservation reference for a stable indoor environment, not a guarantee for every miniature, paint system, base material, or resin. Avoid rapid swings even when the average reading looks acceptable.
A small room hygrometer can reveal whether a proposed location is unusually damp or dry. If readings vary sharply between day and night, move the collection to a more stable room before adding expensive storage. Do not place a humidifier, dehumidifier, or heater immediately beside the case; the local air stream can create a different microclimate from the rest of the room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePrepare each miniature before packing it
- Let finishes cure. Freshly varnished models should cure fully before they are packed. A surface that feels dry can still be soft enough to stick to foam, tissue, or neighboring parts.
- Secure the model to its base or plinth. Check that feet, scenic bases, and any mounting points are firmly attached. A loose model can twist when a tray is moved, putting force on ankles, weapons, and banners.
- Identify fragile projections. Plan clear space around swords, spears, antennae, wings, banners, and thin cables. The storage support should never bear on these parts.
- Remove loose debris. Use a soft brush or air bulb to remove dust from the base and case. Do not scrub raised paint with a cloth.
- Inspect the storage material. Foam that is crumbling, sticky, compressed, or shedding particles should not be reused. A degraded insert can abrade paint or leave residue.
Storage methods compared
| Method | Best use | Strengths | Risks and limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magnetic tray or case | Transport and compact storage | No foam pressure; quick access; models remain attached to a steel sheet | Requires magnets and a ferrous base; tall or top-heavy models need strength and tipping tests |
| Foam case | Transport when models have compatible footprints | Familiar format; protective when cells fit correctly | Compression, rubbing, and fibers can catch paint or fragile parts |
| Clear stackable plastic box | Budget storage and a dust barrier | Inexpensive, visible, and stackable | Needs internal separation and a non-scratching base; plastic is not automatically UV-safe |
| Enclosed display cabinet | Long-term visible display | Reduces dust and handling; can use UV-filtering glazing | Takes space; light exposure still accumulates; direct sun must be avoided |
Magnetic storage: the low-pressure option
How the system works
A magnet is fitted beneath each miniature’s base, and the model is placed on a steel sheet or ferrous tray. WarSplay describes this arrangement as holding models with “zero compression.” In practical terms, the sheet supports the base while leaving the painted body and projections untouched. It is particularly useful when a collection moves between a hobby desk, game night, and shelf.

Build and test it safely
- Choose a magnet that fits entirely within the base without lifting it or creating a wobble.
- Attach the magnet securely and allow its adhesive to cure before loading the tray.
- Place the model on the steel sheet and gently test it from several directions.
- Test the case while carrying it in the orientation you will actually use. A model that holds on a level bench may slide or tip when the case is tilted.
- Give tall, narrow, or top-heavy models extra clearance and a stronger, tested attachment. If a model can pivot, add a separate non-contact restraint around the base rather than letting a lid touch the miniature.
Magnetic storage is not automatically safe simply because it avoids foam. A weak magnet, an uneven base, or a heavy top section can allow a model to topple. Check every model individually, especially conversions and large scenic bases.
Foam cases: when they work and when they damage paint
Foam can protect miniatures when each cavity matches the model’s footprint and depth, but the fit must be supportive rather than tight. The walls should keep the base from sliding while leaving a gap around paint, weapons, and other projections. If you have to press the lid down, the cell is too shallow.
Inspect for pressure and abrasion
- Close the case without forcing the lid and reopen it to check whether any part has been flattened.
- Look for shiny rub marks on prominent edges, powdery paint, or fibers clinging to the miniature.
- Check that neighboring cells cannot flex into one another when the case is carried.
- Replace inserts that have become sticky, brittle, or crumbly.
Never use loose cotton batting as a filler around unframed miniatures. Fibers can catch partially detached flakes and pull them away. If a foam design cannot provide clearance for a banner or antenna, choose another cell layout or another storage method instead of forcing the model into it.
Clear plastic boxes for economical dust control
A clear stackable plastic box is a practical budget choice when each model has its own separation and a stable, non-scratching base. Visibility makes it easy to notice a fallen model or a layer of dust, and stackability saves shelf space. The box itself does not prevent impact damage: add dividers, a tray, or individual base supports so models cannot touch one another when the box moves.

Do not assume clear plastic blocks ultraviolet light. Unless the material is specifically rated for UV filtering, treat it as a dust barrier only. Keep the box away from windows and strong lamps, and avoid stacking it where the upper box presses on a lid or flexes the lower one.
Enclosed display cabinets for long-term viewing
Position the cabinet away from windows
Display is safest when the cabinet is enclosed and placed on an interior wall or another location without direct sun. Glass doors reduce dust and handling, but ordinary glass still admits light. UV-filtering acrylic or glazing can reduce ultraviolet exposure, yet it does not stop all light damage; exposure remains cumulative.
Provide removal clearance
Shelves should allow you to grasp the base or plinth without touching the painted body. Leave vertical clearance above banners and wings, and horizontal clearance so a neighboring model is not struck while one is removed. A crowded cabinet turns routine dusting into a collision risk.

For models whose colors are especially important, rotate the pieces on display or shorten the display period. Store the others in a closed, dark location. Rotation reduces the time any one finish receives light, but it does not make UV-filtering glazing or ordinary glass a complete protection against cumulative exposure.

Handling and cleaning without lifting paint
Use the base as the handle
Pick up a miniature by its base or plinth with clean, dry hands. Do not lift it by a sword, banner pole, wing, shoulder pad, antenna, or other painted projection. When moving a tray, keep it level and support it from underneath rather than gripping a lid or a flexible side wall.
Dust the case and models gently
- Move the case away from the edge of the table before opening it.
- Use a soft artist’s brush or an air bulb to lift dust from the base and broad surfaces.
- Work from the top downward so loosened dust does not settle on areas already cleaned.
- Hold the brush lightly around raised details; do not scrub or use a fibrous cloth on painted surfaces.
- Clean the cabinet shelves and nearby room regularly, because reducing room dust reduces what enters the case.
If a paint flake is already lifting, stop brushing that area. Support the model by its base and avoid any material that could catch the edge of the flake.
A safe packing workflow for transport
- Plan the route and orientation. Decide whether the case will remain level, be carried vertically, or travel in a vehicle. Choose magnets or cells that have been tested in that orientation.
- Check every attachment. Confirm that bases, magnets, and scenic elements are secure. Repair loose parts before packing.
- Load the largest and most fragile models first. Place them where they have the most clearance, not where a lid or divider can touch them.
- Separate contact points. Ensure banners, swords, antennae, and similar projections cannot meet foam, another model, or a divider.
- Close without compression. Stop if the lid requires pressure. Reconfigure the insert or use a larger case.
- Carry and unload carefully. Keep the case supported from below, set it on a stable surface, and remove models by their bases.
Diagnose common storage failures
Paint rubs appear on raised edges
Look for a lid, divider, foam wall, or adjacent model touching the affected area. Increase the clearance, change the cell, or move the model to magnetic storage. Do not polish or wipe the mark; that can remove more paint.

Foam leaves fibers or residue
Remove the insert from service and inspect the miniature with a soft brush or air bulb. Do not use cotton batting to replace the foam. Move the model to a clean tray with a base-only support and keep the case closed until loose particles have been removed.
Dust returns quickly
Check whether the case has gaps, whether the room is unusually dusty, and whether models are being left uncovered during hobby work. Clean the surrounding shelves and floor, then close the case between handling sessions.
Humidity readings swing widely
Move the collection away from basements, attics, windows, plumbing, and heating or cooling vents. Compare readings in another indoor room. Stabilize the location before adding more models, because a sealed box cannot compensate for a persistently unsuitable room.
Maintenance checklist
- Inspect bases, magnets, foam, dividers, and cabinet shelves before each major move.
- Check for sticky or crumbling foam and replace it before it contacts painted surfaces.
- Dust the case and nearby room regularly with methods that do not scrub the miniatures.
- Keep cases off damp floors and away from windows, radiators, pipes, and garages.
- Record which models are displayed and rotate prized pieces when light exposure is a concern.
- Recheck tall and top-heavy models after any change to the tray, base, or magnet.
Choosing the right method for your collection
Choose magnetic trays or cases when transport, compact packing, and zero compression are the priorities and every model can be tested securely. Choose foam only when the cells fit without pressure and the insert remains clean and stable. Choose clear stackable boxes when the main goals are low cost, visibility, and dust reduction, provided you add separation and keep the box away from strong light. Choose an enclosed cabinet for models that will be viewed regularly, then position it away from windows and use UV-filtering glazing only as a reduction measure, not as permission for direct sunlight.
Whatever container you select, the non-negotiable rules are the same: stable indoor conditions, support by the base, no contact with painted surfaces or fragile projections, gentle handling, and a closed barrier against dust and pollutants.
