Store a valuable sports jersey clean and dry, protected from light and dust, and supported without stressing its fabric or seams. For display, reduce light exposure and use UV-filtering glazing if it is framed—but understand that glazing cannot prevent all fading. Because a jersey’s fabric, dyes, lettering, signature and cleaning history can vary, treat this as general textile-care guidance, not a treatment plan for a particular garment.
How do I store a valuable sports jersey?
- Choose a suitable place. Use a clean, dark, dry location away from windows, exterior damp, plumbing, food and pests. Avoid places where moisture or temperature fluctuates significantly.
- Use a protective container. A suitably sized box made of acid-free material or polyethylene can protect a flat textile from dust and handling. Use acid-free tissue where needed for support or between folds; avoid forcing the jersey into sharp creases.
- Support the garment. Arrange it so its weight is distributed rather than concentrated at weak seams or folds. If the fabric or seams may be weak, avoid leaving it hanging under its own weight for long periods.
- Check it periodically. Look for moisture, mold, dust and pests. A temperature and relative-humidity monitor or data logger can reveal changes, but measuring conditions does not control them.
The Canadian Conservation Institute recommends stable materials and identifies light, humidity, pollutants, pests, physical stress and poor handling as risks to textiles. See its basic textile-care guidance and textile-care guidelines.
Why not use a dry-cleaner garment bag?
Do not use the thin plastic bag from a dry cleaner as long-term protection. The Canadian Conservation Institute says these bags do not protect textiles from light, restrict air circulation in a way that can encourage moisture buildup, and are typically made from a non-recommended plastic.
Can I display a signed jersey without fading it?
You can reduce the risk, but no display arrangement can promise that a jersey or signature will not fade. Keep it out of direct sunlight, use low illumination, switch display lighting off when nobody is viewing it, and limit how long the jersey stays on display. Heat-producing lights should also be avoided.

If you frame the jersey, use UV-filtering glazing and appropriate stable support and framing materials. UV filtering is only one layer of protection: visible light can still damage textiles even when ultraviolet and infrared radiation are removed. The Library of Congress guidance on limiting light damage makes this distinction explicit. The Canadian Conservation Institute also advises reducing light exposure in its basic care guidance.
Is a jersey display case safe?
A case can help limit dust and casual handling, but the word “case” alone does not establish that it is safe for a jersey. Assess the whole arrangement: light exposure, moisture conditions, support, materials, and whether you can inspect the garment. For a frame or case, verify that the glazing is specified as UV-filtering and that the jersey is held securely on suitable support; do not assume that a display case prevents fading or corrects poor mounting.

- Light: Keep the case away from direct sun and reduce both brightness and display time.
- Support: The jersey should not sag, pull at seams, or depend on an unverified adhesive or pinning method.
- Materials: Choose stable materials appropriate for textile display rather than relying on a product label without specifications.
- Inspection: Make sure you can check for moisture, pests and changes in condition.
If the jersey is fragile or its condition is uncertain, have a textile conservator assess it before choosing a mount. General preventive-care guidance does not establish the right mounting method for every jersey.
What humidity is safe for a collectible jersey?
Avoid damp conditions and large fluctuations. The Canadian Conservation Institute says damp above 70% relative humidity (RH) is the condition that should always be avoided in textile collections. That is a conservation warning, not a universal household target or a jersey-specific safe range. Its CCI Note 13/1 dates to 2013.

The Institute’s general textile guidance reports that mold takes three months or more to develop at 70% RH, while at 90% RH it can grow in only a few days. These are broad conservation observations, not a forecast for an individual jersey; actual risk depends on its conditions. See Caring for textiles and costumes.
The Smithsonian Museum Conservation Institute describes a storage practice of 45% RH ± 8% RH and 70°F ± 4°F for its collections. Those figures provide institutional context, not a recommended home setting for an individual jersey; the Smithsonian’s climate and textiles storage page describes that practice.

When should I ask a conservator?
Get a textile conservator’s assessment before washing, pressing or mounting a jersey if it is fragile, stained, signed, valuable, or has an unknown cleaning history. The risks depend on its materials and condition, which general textile guidance cannot determine. In particular, do not assume that a familiar washing method or an ordinary display mount is suitable for an unknown fabric, decoration or signature.
