To store ADA, choose a Cardano wallet, secure its recovery credentials, and use it to manage the keys that authorize transactions. To practice safely, use a Cardano testnet wallet with test ADA from the official faucet—not real ADA on mainnet. After sending, use the transaction ID (TxId) to check whether the transaction appears in an explorer and has been included in a block.
What a Cardano wallet stores—and what you control
ADA is recorded on the Cardano blockchain; a wallet manages the keys used to access funds and authorize transactions. It does not hold the ADA as a file on your computer or phone. If you lose the private keys or recovery credentials and cannot restore them, you may lose access to the funds. Anyone who obtains them may be able to control the assets.
Back up your recovery credentials securely and keep them confidential. Never enter a recovery phrase into a website, send it to support, or share it with another person. A wallet provider should not need your phrase to help you verify a transaction.
Choose a wallet based on custody and how you use ADA
Wallets differ in who controls the keys, how they store them, how they connect to the network, and which Cardano features they support. Cardano’s wallet guide strongly discourages storing assets on exchanges. With an exchange account, the provider controls the keys; with a self-custody wallet, you control the recovery credentials and take responsibility for protecting them.

| Option | Who controls the keys? | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange account | The exchange generally holds the keys. | Convenient account-based access, but access depends on the provider and account security. |
| Software wallet | You control the keys in a self-custody setup. | Convenient for everyday access, but the device and its software are connected to the internet and need careful security. |
| Hardware wallet | You control the keys; the device is designed to keep them offline while authorizing transactions. | Optional extra protection for key storage, but it does not prevent phishing, unsafe backups, loss, or mistakes when reviewing a transaction. |
| Daedalus | You control the keys in the wallet. | A full-node desktop wallet that independently validates transaction history; it uses more local resources than lighter wallet options. |
The wallet that fits depends on your security habits, device, and intended Cardano features, including whether you want to delegate ADA. Confirm that the specific wallet supports the assets and functions you need. Hardware is not required for a test transaction. Cardano Docs list Trezor Model T, Ledger Nano S Plus, and Ledger Nano X, but compatibility depends on the exact wallet app and device; verify current support before buying or connecting one.
Use testnet ADA to practice without risking mainnet funds
A testnet is a separate Cardano network used for experimentation. Test ADA on it is not mainnet ADA and cannot be treated as real funds. Use a wallet that supports the test network you select, and obtain test ADA through the official Cardano testnet faucet.

- Choose the test network. Preview and Pre-production are distinct testnets. Cardano’s testnet documentation identifies Preview with network magic 2 and Pre-production with network magic 1. Mainnet uses the mainnet flag; testnet command-line transactions use
--testnet-magic INTEGER. Consumer wallets may present the network choice differently. - Set up a wallet for that network. Follow the wallet’s own current instructions. Do not assume an address or balance belongs to the same network just because the wallet looks familiar.
- Request test ADA from the faucet. Follow the faucet’s directions for the selected network and the wallet address. Keep your recovery phrase private; a faucet should not need it.
- Confirm sender and recipient use the same network. A testnet transaction is separate from mainnet. Check the wallet’s network indication and the recipient address before sending.
One ADA equals 1,000,000 lovelaces, the smallest denomination of ADA, according to Cardano’s explanation of what a cryptocurrency is. This conversion describes units; it does not set a recommended transfer amount or transaction fee.
Send the practice transaction
Exact controls vary by wallet, so follow its current instructions rather than relying on a universal screen path. The core Cardano transaction lifecycle is creation, signing by an authorized key holder, and submission to the network. A submitted transaction is not necessarily included in the ledger yet.

- Open the wallet on the intended test network and choose its send or transfer function.
- Enter or scan the recipient’s address, then enter an amount of test ADA.
- Review the recipient address and selected network carefully. If the address or network is wrong, stop rather than signing.
- Review the transaction details and any displayed fee, then authorize it with the wallet.
- Submit the signed transaction and copy its TxId from the wallet’s result or transaction details.
If you instead send ADA on mainnet, that is a real transfer of value, not a test. Verify the mainnet selection and recipient address before authorizing. No single fee or confirmation-time estimate applies across wallets and conditions, so use the amount and status shown by your wallet and verify the actual ledger record.

Use the TxId to check the transaction independently of the wallet’s submitted status. Cardano’s tracking tools guide describes explorers as tools for searching transaction, block, or epoch IDs and inspecting block details, including confirmations.

- Copy the full TxId from the wallet.
- Open Cardano Explorer or another suitable Cardano explorer.
- Search for the TxId and open the matching transaction record.
- Check the transaction details, including the network context, and look for its included block and confirmation information.
A wallet saying “submitted” means it sent the transaction, not that it is already in the ledger. If an explorer does not find the TxId immediately, check that you are using an explorer for the same network and that the ID was copied correctly. Then check the wallet’s status and try again later; do not resend a transaction blindly, especially on mainnet.
