Use systemd’s LoadCredential= to give your service a protected, read-only runtime copy of a YouTube stream key instead of placing the secret in the unit file or an environment variable. Store the source key in a restricted file, point the service at it, and have the encoder read the credential from $CREDENTIALS_DIRECTORY/stream-key. If your installed systemd supports it and you need encryption at rest, use LoadCredentialEncrypted=.

Why a YouTube stream key needs careful handling

A stream key is a credential: YouTube’s encoder workflow has you copy it from YouTube Studio and paste it into the encoder’s stream settings. Anyone who obtains a usable key may be able to send a stream to the associated broadcast setup. Treat it like other secret authentication material, and avoid putting it in places that expose it more broadly than the encoder needs.

For a systemd-managed service, the preferred pattern is to store the key in a protected source file and let systemd provide a runtime copy through its credential mechanism. The application must support reading the key from a file, or you must use a wrapper that does so without printing or logging the value.

Set up a protected credential file

1. Get the key from YouTube Studio

Copy the stream key from the channel’s live-stream settings in YouTube Studio. Keep it private while provisioning it; do not paste it into a shared terminal session, ticket, source file, or chat.

Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

2. Create a restricted source file

For a system service, one operational example is a root-owned file with mode 0600. This is a practical permissions choice, not a systemd-mandated mode. Create the parent directory and file using your administrator account, and grant access only to the administrators who must provision or rotate the secret.

sudo install -d -o root -g root -m 0700 /etc/my-stream
sudo install -o root -g root -m 0600 /dev/null /etc/my-stream/stream-key
sudoedit /etc/my-stream/stream-key

Enter the key in the editor, save, and close it. Avoid commands that place the key itself in shell history or expose it in a command line.

  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts

Load the key with systemd credentials

3. Configure the service

Add a credential directive in the unit’s [Service] section. Replace the example executable and arguments with the actual encoder’s documented file-input options.

[Service]
User=streamer
LoadCredential=stream-key:/etc/my-stream/stream-key
ExecStart=/usr/local/bin/run-encoder --key-file=${CREDENTIALS_DIRECTORY}/stream-key

LoadCredential= makes the named credential available in the service’s credential directory. The runtime copy is read-only, with access limited to the configured service user and root. It reduces exposure of the source file and avoids putting the secret directly in unit text or the environment; it does not protect the key from a compromised service process or a root administrator.

4. Confirm the encoder can read a file

The example argument --key-file is illustrative, not a universal encoder option. Check the encoder’s own documentation for a supported file-based key input. If it cannot read a file, use a small wrapper that reads the credential and passes it to the encoder through an appropriate interface without logging it. Do not assume that an encoder supports a particular mechanism without verifying it.

5. Reload and start the unit

After editing the unit, reload systemd’s unit definitions and restart the service using the actual unit name:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart my-stream.service
sudo systemctl status my-stream.service

Check the service status and logs for ordinary startup errors, but make sure your encoder or wrapper does not include the key in diagnostic output. Verify that the stream reaches YouTube before treating the deployment as complete.

When encrypted storage at rest is needed

If the source file must not remain plaintext at rest, and the installed systemd version supports the directive, use LoadCredentialEncrypted= with a credential prepared using systemd’s credential tooling. systemd decrypts and authenticates the credential during service activation. Support and behavior can vary by installed version and distribution backports, so check the host’s local systemd.exec manual and confirm the available syntax before deploying.

User services can also use systemd credentials, but encrypted credentials need to target the relevant per-user manager. Follow the systemd documentation for user-targeted credential provisioning rather than assuming a system service’s encryption setup applies unchanged.

What not to use for the secret

  • Environment=: systemd warns that environment variables are unsuitable for secrets because they may be exposed to unprivileged clients through D-Bus and inherited by child processes. An EnvironmentFile= still places the value in the service environment, so it does not avoid those risks.
  • SetCredential= with plaintext: systemd warns that literal credential data supplied this way is accessible to unprivileged processes through IPC; reserve it for non-sensitive data.
  • Secret text in ExecStart=, shell commands, logs, scripts, or source control: avoid embedding the key in these places. Their exposure depends on the tools and environment involved, so do not assume that moving the key out of the unit alone makes every other handling path safe.

If the key is exposed

Reset it in YouTube Live Control Room, then update the protected source credential and restart or otherwise reload the encoder as required. YouTube’s documented path is to open Live Control Room, select the Stream tab, locate Stream key, and choose Reset. A channel owner or manager can reset the key; editors and viewers cannot.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep a prerecorded YouTube channel live continuously rather than run an encoder on your Linux host, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams uploaded video at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live encoder.
