Store a down camping blanket fully dry and uncompressed in a cool, dry place. Leave it loose on a shelf or hang it if its construction allows; if you need to contain it, use the supplied storage sack or a roomy alternative. Keep the compression sack for trips, and follow the blanket’s care label.
Why long-term compression matters
Down insulation works by holding air in its loft. Keeping a blanket tightly compressed for extended storage can reduce that loft and its insulating efficiency. Dry the blanket before putting it away
After a trip, air the blanket until it is completely dry, including any areas that may have stayed damp. Do not store it damp: moisture can lead to mildew. The North Face says to dry sleeping bags completely before storage and advises using a cool, dry place. Keep the storage environment dry
Therm-a-Rest specifically advises against using a waterproof bag for long-term storage of its down blanket. Do not assume a sealed plastic container is suitable unless the blanket’s maker says so. Choose a location that stays dry, and keep the blanket loose rather than sealing it tightly into a transport sack.

Pack it away after each trip
- Check the care label and follow the blanket maker’s storage instructions.
- Air the blanket until it is fully dry before storage.
- Leave it loose on a shelf, hang it if appropriate, or put it in a roomy storage sack.
- Use the compression sack when packing for transport, then remove the blanket from it for long-term storage.
What the guidance does not specify
The cited manufacturer care instructions do not establish a universal storage temperature, a fixed time limit for compression, or a measurable amount of loft loss. Use the product label and manufacturer guidance rather than applying a made-up threshold.
