The safest baseline is simple: create the wallet offline, write the recovery phrase in the exact order shown, verify every word, and keep the record private in a physically secure place. Paper is inexpensive and easy to replace, but it can burn, get wet, fade, tear, or be lost. Metal backup plates and letter-tile systems withstand common environmental hazards better, but they are still a complete bearer secret: anyone who obtains the full record can generally restore the wallet. A hardware wallet protects signing keys during everyday transactions, yet it does not replace a securely stored recovery phrase.

Use a paper record when accessibility and low cost matter most, metal when long-term physical durability matters most, and a hardware wallet when you need to approve transactions while keeping signing keys away from malware on a connected computer. In every case, secrecy, accurate transcription, and a tested recovery plan matter more than the material alone.

What a crypto seed phrase is—and why it must stay secret

A recovery phrase, also called a seed phrase, is an ordered sequence of words from which a wallet can be fully restored. The words are not a password hint or an account identifier; together, in the correct order, they provide the information needed to regenerate the wallet’s keys and addresses.

Control of the phrase normally means control of the assets. Someone who finds the complete phrase can usually restore the wallet on another compatible device without touching your original phone, computer, or hardware wallet. Treat the phrase like cash that authorizes access: do not send it to support staff, paste it into a website, enter it into an app, or show it to another person.

A device PIN, screen lock, or hardware-wallet passcode protects the device itself. It does not make a copied recovery phrase harmless. A separate passphrase can add another factor on wallets that support one, but storing that passphrase beside the seed removes much of the benefit.

Paper, metal, and hardware wallets compared

These options solve different problems. Paper and metal are backup media. A hardware wallet is primarily a transaction-signing device that also depends on a backup phrase for restoration.

Method Environmental durability If the complete record is discovered Setup and recovery Resistance to online attacks Emergency accessibility
Paper recovery sheet Vulnerable to fire, water, tearing, fading, and loss The finder can generally restore the wallet Simple to write and replace; recovery requires an accurate copy The written record is offline, but it offers no protection if photographed or copied Easy to read if the storage location is reachable
Metal plate or letter-tile backup Designed to resist common fire, water, and wear hazards better than paper The finder can generally restore the wallet; metal does not encrypt the phrase More involved initial assembly; recovery is straightforward if every word and position are documented Offline storage avoids network exposure, but discovery remains decisive Usually accessible if stored in a known secure location
Hardware wallet The device can be lost, damaged, reset, or discontinued; the phrase remains the durable recovery reference A discovered phrase can generally restore the wallet even when the device is protected Requires device interaction for signing and a separate physical backup for recovery Keeps signing keys offline and can require user approval, reducing exposure to malware on a connected computer Transactions require the device; restoration requires the phrase and a compatible wallet

No authoritative source establishes a single numeric failure rate or lifespan ranking for these methods. The practical distinction is qualitative: paper is easiest to produce but easiest to damage, metal tolerates more physical hazards, and hardware wallets reduce remote signing exposure without eliminating backup risk.

How to store a seed phrase on paper

Record it offline

Generate the wallet and display the recovery phrase on the intended device, away from cameras, screen-sharing software, and other people. Write every word by hand on the wallet’s supplied recovery sheet or on another durable archival sheet. Do not type the phrase into a computer, phone note, password manager, email draft, printer, or cloud document.

Verify spelling and order

Compare each handwritten word with the device display, then check the complete sequence from beginning to end. If the wallet provides a backup-check or recovery-verification flow, complete it before funding the wallet. A single misspelled word or transposed position can produce a different wallet and make the backup appear useless when you need it.

Choose a private physical location

Place the paper where visitors, cleaners, contractors, roommates, cameras, and casual searches cannot reach it. A locked container, home safe, or safety-deposit box can provide physical control, but the container is only useful if its access is restricted. Fire resistance does not compensate for an exposed phrase.

Understand paper’s failure modes

  • Fire can destroy ordinary paper quickly.
  • Water, humidity, and spills can blur ink or make pages unreadable.
  • Folding, abrasion, and repeated handling can tear the sheet.
  • Ink can fade over time, especially in light or heat.
  • A misplaced sheet can be unrecoverable even when the wallet itself still works.

A second paper copy can improve resilience only when its storage location is genuinely independent and equally private. Two copies in the same drawer do not protect against the same burglary, fire, or mistake.

When a metal backup is the better choice

Metal plates and letter-tile kits are designed for people who want a backup that withstands environmental damage better than paper. Guidance from Ledger recommends writing the phrase on durable, fireproof and waterproof metal and keeping multiple copies in separate secure locations. Trezor describes its Keep Metal product as an environment-proof backup approach. These recommendations address physical durability, not secrecy.

Assemble and inspect every entry

Follow the kit’s instructions for entering letters, positions, or word indexes. Confirm the spelling and order against the original device display. If the system stores only the first several letters of each word, verify that the kit’s documented format is sufficient for the wallet’s word list and that the position of every word is unambiguous. Keep the kit’s instructions with your recovery documentation only if doing so does not reveal the phrase to an unauthorized person.

Metal is durable, not encrypted

A thief who obtains all the required letters or tiles can attempt wallet recovery just as they could with paper. Do not treat a metal plate as a password-protected safe. Store it in a locked, private location and consider separate copies only when you can secure each one independently.

Use a container as a second layer

A fire-resistant safe or lockbox can protect a paper or metal record from casual access and some household hazards. It is not a substitute for secrecy: anyone who can open the container and read the complete phrase has the information needed to attempt recovery.

What a hardware wallet protects—and what it cannot

Hardware wallets keep signing keys offline and require deliberate user interaction for transaction approval. Bitcoin.org’s management criteria describe a push model in which computer malware cannot sign a transaction without user input. This design reduces the chance that malware on a connected computer can silently authorize a transfer.

The hardware device is not the wallet backup. It can be lost, damaged, reset, or discontinued. Restoring on a replacement device requires the recovery phrase, and entering that phrase into a website, phone note, cloud drive, or support chat defeats the security model. Use only the recovery flow on a compatible wallet device or trusted wallet software, and keep the phrase off internet-connected systems.

If the device is lost

Use the securely stored phrase to restore the wallet on a compatible replacement device. A lost device does not automatically expose funds if the phrase remains private and the device’s PIN or equivalent protection was enabled. If you believe the phrase itself was copied, treat the wallet as compromised and move assets to a newly generated wallet whose new phrase has never been exposed.

A secure setup procedure

  1. Prepare a private workspace. Disconnect unnecessary cameras and screen-sharing tools, and ensure no one can observe the phrase.
  2. Generate the wallet on the intended device. Follow the device’s official initialization process rather than importing a phrase supplied by another person or website.
  3. Write every word in order. Handwrite the phrase on the supplied recovery sheet or enter it into the chosen metal backup while offline. Never photograph or type it.
  4. Complete the device’s verification. Use the built-in recovery-check or backup-verification flow if provided. Correct errors immediately while the phrase is still visible on the device.
  5. Secure the physical record. Place it in a private, physically protected location that visitors and cameras cannot access.
  6. Separate additional secrets. If you use a passphrase or other extra factor, store it separately. Keeping both secrets together removes the additional barrier.
  7. Create redundancy deliberately. If you make a second copy, use an independent secure location and document how a trusted heir could locate it without exposing the phrase to unrelated people.
  8. Test unfamiliar designs first. Before relying on secret sharing, multisignature, or a new recovery format, rehearse recovery with a small, controlled test wallet.

Where to keep the backup

The right location balances privacy, physical protection, and eventual access. A hidden drawer may be private but vulnerable to fire or theft; a safety-deposit box may be physically secure but difficult for heirs to access quickly. Consider the hazards specific to your home and jurisdiction, and avoid locations that require a single unrecorded memory or an unavailable key.

  • Private home safe: useful when access is controlled and the safe provides meaningful fire and water protection.
  • Safety-deposit box: can provide separation from household hazards, but succession and access rules need to be understood.
  • Separate secure location for a second copy: improves resilience against one site being destroyed, provided the second site is not easier for an attacker to access.
  • Locations to avoid: desk drawers, unencrypted notebooks, luggage, shared offices, vehicles, or any place monitored by cameras or routinely handled by others.

Do not hide the phrase in a place so obscure that your future self or a trusted heir cannot find it. Write a separate access plan that identifies the existence and general location of the backup without reproducing the secret itself.

Should you split a seed phrase or use multisignature?

Splitting a backup or distributing spending authority can reduce some single-point risks, but it increases recovery complexity. Ledger discusses Shamir Secret Sharing and multisignature as advanced approaches. They require more components to be documented, stored, and rehearsed than a single phrase.

BIP-388 cautions that, in some wallet-policy designs, a seed alone may not identify the wallet policy. Losing policy details, cosigner information, derivation settings, or threshold instructions can permanently strand funds even when one seed remains available.

Use a written recovery plan

Document which components exist, where each is stored, what threshold is required, and which wallet software or policy restores them. Keep this description separate from the live secrets where practical. A plan that only the original owner understands is not a resilient inheritance plan.

Rehearse before funding

Test the complete process with a small wallet. Confirm that the intended combination of shares or cosigners restores the expected addresses and that each participant understands their role. Do not experiment for the first time after a device failure or emergency.

Common mistakes and how to recover from them

Photographing or scanning the phrase

Images can synchronize to cloud services, appear in backups, or be recovered from deleted folders. If a phrase has been photographed or scanned, assume it may be exposed and migrate funds to a newly generated wallet after securing a fresh physical backup.

Saving it in cloud storage or email

Cloud accounts can be breached, shared, indexed, or locked. An unencrypted digital copy turns a physical-secret problem into an online credential problem. Do not keep the phrase in cloud drives, email, messaging apps, browser notes, or ordinary password fields.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Asking support to restore it

Legitimate support should not need your complete recovery phrase. Anyone requesting it is asking for the information that controls the wallet. End the conversation and use the vendor’s documented recovery procedure instead.

Keeping the phrase and passphrase together

If an additional passphrase is stored beside the seed, a finder may gain both factors at once. Store them separately and make sure your recovery plan explains how the authorized owner can reunite them without publishing either secret.

Making copies without checking privacy

Redundancy helps only when each copy is accurate and protected. Before creating a second record, decide who could see it during manufacture, transport, storage, and inheritance. Destroy flawed or obsolete copies so they cannot be mistaken for the live backup.

Maintenance and periodic checks

Security is an ongoing process rather than a one-time writing exercise. At an interval appropriate to your circumstances, inspect the physical record without exposing it to unnecessary people or cameras. Check that paper remains legible, metal entries remain firmly fixed, and storage access still works.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review whether the wallet software, device, chain support, and recovery instructions have changed. Retail products, firmware, supported chains, and device availability can change over time, so verify compatibility before an emergency restoration. Never “test” a live phrase by entering it into an untrusted website or sending it to a person; use an isolated, controlled recovery procedure.

Choosing the right combination

Choose paper when

  • You need the simplest and least expensive physical record.
  • You can provide a genuinely private, protected storage location.
  • You are willing to replace the sheet if it becomes damaged or illegible.

Choose metal when

  • Fire, water, humidity, or long-term wear are significant concerns.
  • You want a more durable physical record and can secure it from discovery.
  • You can accurately assemble and verify the plate or tile system.

Add a hardware wallet when

  • You regularly sign transactions and want signing keys kept away from malware on a connected computer.
  • You can protect the device and maintain a separate physical recovery phrase.
  • You understand that losing the device is recoverable only if the phrase and any additional passphrase or policy information remain available.

For many users, the practical arrangement is a hardware wallet for daily signing plus one carefully verified physical backup, with a second independent copy only when both locations can remain private. The material protects against physical damage; disciplined secrecy protects against theft.
