Keep your crypto recovery phrase offline as a physical backup: write it by hand on a paper backup card, or use a durable metal backup that matches your wallet’s recovery format and word count. Do not photograph, email, upload, save, or type the words into a website or ordinary app. Then choose a private place that protects the backup from both discovery and damage.
What a recovery phrase is—and why it must stay secret
A recovery phrase, also called a wallet backup or recovery seed, is an ordered list of words your wallet can use to restore access. Anyone who gets the phrase may be able to access the funds it protects, so handle it like a secret key rather than a note to share or store for convenience.
“Offline” means there is no digital copy. Trezor warns: “Never make a digital copy of your wallet backup (this includes Dropbox, email, encrypted folders, or photos).” Its guidance also says not to type the words into an app or website. See Trezor’s wallet-backup guidance.
Make an offline backup accurately
- Use the wallet’s official backup process. Follow the instructions for your wallet and record the phrase in its original order.
- Write it on a paper backup card or compatible metal backup. Keep the process private; do not dictate the words in a public or recorded setting.
- Check the transcription against the wallet’s instructions. A recording or marking mistake can make a backup unusable. Do not create a photo, scan, note, password-manager entry, email draft, cloud file, or shared-drive copy as a check or extra backup.
- Store the physical copy privately. Choose a location that reduces access by visitors, housemates, or cleaners while remaining findable by you or a trusted recovery plan.
A hardware-wallet maker may provide a device-confirmed recovery flow. Follow that maker’s official instructions, and do not mistake it for permission to enter the phrase into a web page or ordinary computer prompt. Trezor says it will never ask for the backup and warns users never to enter it except when prompted by their Trezor device. Do not send it to customer support or anyone claiming to help recover funds. Ledger’s security guidance, updated May 7, 2024, likewise says not to share a 24-word phrase or store it online: Ledger’s hardware-wallet security tips.

Choose paper or metal based on your risks
Paper is a simple physical option, but it can be damaged by fire, water, fading, or ordinary wear. Metal may offer better durability against physical damage, but it does not prevent theft or discovery. The sources do not establish lab-tested durability figures for the cited products, so do not assume a specific fire rating or lifespan.

Match a metal backup to the wallet’s format
Do not assume every plate fits every wallet backup. Trezor says BIP39 backups may contain 12 or 24 words, while SLIP39 backups may contain 20 words. Its product examples are specifically format- and word-count-matched:

Pick a storage place you can protect and remember
Think about the risks where you live and how you would retrieve the backup when necessary. A safe can help restrict casual access, but a conspicuous safe may attract attention; Trezor advises considering a discreet location. Balance secrecy against the risk of forgetting where you put it. Also consider fire, water, accidental disposal, and who might enter the space. Physical durability and physical security are separate: a metal plate can better withstand damage than paper yet remain vulnerable if someone finds or steals it.

Treat a phrase that may have been seen, copied, or shared as compromised. Consult the official emergency instructions for your specific wallet. Recovery and replacement procedures vary; do not rely on a universal migration method or enter the phrase into an unfamiliar tool while trying to secure funds.
