To stop Xbox activity from reaching social networks, change two kinds of permissions: Xbox privacy controls for who can see your activity, and the separate permission that lets other people share your Xbox content to external networks. On your console, open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize. Review Friends, followers & clubs and Game content, choose Friends for limited visibility or Block for the most restrictive setting, then disable any option equivalent to ShareContentToExternalNetworks. Finally, remove copies that were already posted on the destination service; changing Xbox settings does not delete third-party copies.
Why Xbox activity appears to other people
Xbox activity is broader than a single “post to social media” switch. Depending on your account settings, other people may see your gamertag, game and play statistics, achievements, online presence, shared clips or screenshots, broadcasts, and other activity. Microsoft describes these as separate types of information governed by privacy settings.
There are also two different destinations:
- Xbox visibility: what people can see on your Xbox profile, activity feed, clubs, or related Xbox surfaces.
- External-network sharing: whether Xbox content can be shared to services outside Xbox, such as a social network or chat platform.
Restricting one does not necessarily change the other. For example, you can keep your achievements visible to Xbox friends while preventing content from being shared to external networks, or block Xbox visibility and still need to delete an old copy on a third-party service.
Change the Xbox privacy settings on your console
- Press the Xbox button and open Profile & system > Settings.
- Choose Account > Privacy & online safety.
- Open Xbox privacy, then select View details & customize.
- Open Friends, followers & clubs and review every “who can see” choice that relates to your activity.
- Open Game content (the wording can vary by account or console software) and review visibility for achievements, game history, clips, screenshots, broadcasts, and other shared content.
- For each item, select Friends if you want to share only with accepted Xbox friends, or Block when you do not want the category visible to others. Some categories may offer Everyone as well.
- Back out of the menu and verify that the new choices were saved. If the console asks you to submit or confirm the change, do so before leaving the page.
The exact labels can change as Xbox updates its menus. Use the category describing the content rather than looking for one universal “social media” switch. Presence, achievements, game statistics, and user-created content can have independent controls.

What to change for each kind of activity
Start by identifying exactly what another person can see. A friend seeing that you are currently signed in is a presence issue; a completed challenge is an achievement issue; a list of recently played titles is game-history or game-content visibility; and a video or image is user-created content. These distinctions matter because restricting one does not automatically restrict the others.
| Activity or content | Setting area to review | Typical choice |
|---|---|---|
| Online presence | Friends, followers & clubs and related privacy choices | Friends, or Block for no audience |
| Achievements and statistics | Game content | Friends for a limited audience; Block for maximum privacy |
| Game history or play information | Game content or equivalent activity category | Friends or Block, depending on whether friends should see it |
| Clips, screenshots and broadcasts | Game content plus external-network sharing | Block external sharing and avoid manual external posts |
If you are unsure which item caused a notification or post, review every category instead of changing only the most obvious one. Microsoft says gamertags, play statistics, achievements, presence, shared content, and other Xbox activity can be visible according to the account’s settings.
Use Xbox.com when the console is unavailable
Microsoft also allows Xbox privacy settings to be edited online after you sign in. Use the privacy and online-safety controls associated with the same Microsoft/Xbox account, then review the same Friends, followers & clubs and Game content categories. Online changes are useful when a console is away, shared, or unable to load the settings page.
After saving online, sign out and back in on the console or reopen the profile page to confirm that the account is showing the new choices. If the settings appear unchanged, check that the browser is signed in to the intended account rather than another Microsoft account. A browser profile can retain a different Microsoft login even when the console is using the right gamertag.
Disable sharing to external social networks
In addition to ordinary visibility settings, Xbox has a distinct external-network permission. Microsoft’s developer documentation identifies it as ShareContentToExternalNetworks, defined as allowing other users to share the owner’s Xbox LIVE content to external social networks.
The consumer menu may not display that exact technical name. In Game content or a similarly named activity category, look for wording about allowing others to share your content outside Xbox, share to external networks, or share your clips and screenshots externally. Set that permission to the most restrictive choice available, usually Block or No.
- Use this permission when you want to prevent external reposting while keeping some activity visible inside Xbox.
- Review ordinary content visibility as well; external sharing and Xbox profile visibility are separate decisions.
- Repeat the review after a major console or account-settings update because menu names and grouping can move.
This permission addresses what other users can share from your Xbox content. It does not erase media that has already been copied to another service, and it does not replace the setting that controls whether friends can see your profile activity inside Xbox.

Stop creating new posts manually
Privacy settings do not replace the sharing controls you use when publishing something yourself. Do not select a social-network destination when sharing a new clip or screenshot, and do not publish an activity-feed post that includes the game, achievement, broadcast, or presence you are trying to keep private.

Before confirming a share, check the destination shown in the share sheet. A clip can remain private on Xbox while a copy is sent to another service if you explicitly choose that service. The same applies to broadcasts and activity-feed posts: an intentional share is a separate action from who can view your Xbox profile.
Use this check every time you capture media, not only when changing your privacy settings. A setting that limits profile visibility cannot undo a deliberate share to Facebook, X, Discord, or another linked destination.
Remove posts that already exist elsewhere
Changing Xbox privacy settings controls future Xbox visibility and sharing. It is not a documented deletion mechanism for copies that another service has already stored. If an achievement, clip, screenshot, broadcast, or activity post is already visible on Facebook, X, Discord, or another destination:

- Delete the post, media item, message, or shared link from that service.
- Check the service’s connected-app or linked-account permissions and revoke Xbox access if you no longer want the connection.
- Ask other accounts that re-shared the item to remove their copies; deleting your original does not automatically remove independent copies.
Allow time for cached previews or search results to disappear after deletion. Those copies are controlled by the destination service, not by the Xbox privacy page. If a destination keeps a preview, use that service’s own reporting, deletion, or privacy process rather than repeatedly changing Xbox settings.
Choose the right visibility level
Make the choice by matching the audience, content type, destination, and account authority. The practical options are:
- Everyone: use only for categories you deliberately want broadly discoverable. This can expose activity to people who are not Xbox friends.
- Friends: a middle setting for sharing achievements, presence, or game information with accepted Xbox friends while limiting public visibility.
- Block: the restrictive choice when a category should not be visible through Xbox or should not be available for sharing, where that option is offered.
Apply the decision separately to presence, achievements, game statistics or history, clips and screenshots, broadcasts, and other game content. Blocking one category does not imply that the others are blocked.
A useful way to decide is to ask four questions: Who should see this—everyone, friends, or nobody? What is being exposed—presence, an achievement, history, or media? Where is it appearing—an Xbox surface or an external network? Who controls the account—an adult account holder or a family organizer? Answering all four prevents a common mistake, such as setting achievements to Friends while leaving external sharing enabled for clips.

If the account belongs to a child:
- Identify the Microsoft account that is actually signed in to Xbox.
- Have the family organizer open the child’s profile in the Xbox Family Settings app.
- Review the child’s privacy, communication, and sharing controls, including messaging and other contact permissions.
- Return to the Xbox privacy page on the child’s account and check Friends, followers & clubs, Game content, and external-network sharing.
- Test the profile from a separate account that is not in the family group to confirm what an outside viewer can see.
A child may be unable to override an organizer’s setting from the console. If a change appears to revert, make it from the organizer account or the Family Settings app rather than repeatedly changing the child profile. Check the family-group role first; changing the wrong account will not alter the child’s effective policy.
Understand game-publisher data separately
Hiding activity on Xbox does not necessarily stop a game or app publisher from receiving data under its own relationship with Microsoft. Microsoft explains that publishers may receive an Xbox identifier, gamertag, gameplay sessions, presence, rankings, statistics, profile information, friends lists, and content created or submitted in the game or app.
This matters when the concern is a particular game publisher rather than an Xbox activity feed. Review that publisher’s privacy policy and the consent choices associated with the game or app. Microsoft says that removing the game or app from all installed devices can stop sharing game or app data with that publisher where applicable. That action is separate from changing who can see your Xbox achievements or profile.
Uninstalling a game is therefore not a substitute for Xbox privacy controls, and changing Xbox visibility is not a guarantee that a publisher will erase data it already received. Treat those as two different requests: one controls Xbox audience visibility, the other concerns the publisher’s data practices. If the item appears on a publisher leaderboard, in a publisher account, or inside a game-specific social feature, use that publisher’s controls as well as Xbox settings.
What to check when activity is still visible
The wrong account is signed in
Confirm the gamertag and Microsoft account on the console, Xbox.com, and the destination social service. Shared consoles and multiple browser profiles make it easy to change one account while viewing another. Compare the account identity before assuming a setting failed.
The change was not saved
Return to Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize and verify the selected value. Online changes may require an explicit save or submit action. Do not leave the page until the confirmation has completed.
Only one category was restricted
Check both Friends, followers & clubs and Game content. Then review the external-network permission. Presence, achievements, game history, and user-created media can be controlled independently, so a successful change in one category may leave another visible.

For a child account, inspect the family group and make the change from the organizer’s controls. A local console change may not take precedence over the organizer’s policy.

The visible item is a third-party copy
Open the destination service and inspect the post’s owner, timestamp, and sharing history. If it was copied or re-shared there, Xbox cannot retract that copy; use the destination’s deletion and connected-app controls. Ask each account that independently reposted it to remove its own copy.
The concern is a publisher, not Xbox
If the information appears inside a game, publisher account, leaderboard, or game-specific social feature, use the publisher’s privacy and consent controls. Xbox profile visibility settings do not govern every data flow from an installed game.
Why a router or device blocker is the wrong fix
A router rule or blanket privacy utility can interrupt Xbox connectivity, but it cannot selectively remove an achievement, hide only game history, or delete a post already held by a social network. Blocking network access also prevents legitimate multiplayer, updates, and sign-in functions. Use the account-level permissions for selective control, then manage old copies on the service where they were posted. No physical product is required to make this change; the relevant controls are account and destination-service settings.
A practical privacy setup
For most people who want Xbox friends to see limited activity but do not want external reposting, set the relevant Xbox categories to Friends, disable external-network sharing, and stop manually sending new media to social services.
For the strictest Xbox profile, set every available activity and game-content category to Block, disable external-network sharing, and avoid publishing from the share sheet. For a child account, have the family organizer apply those choices in the Family Settings app and verify the result from an outside account.
If the problem is an old post, start at the destination service rather than changing the console repeatedly. If the problem is data visible inside a particular game, investigate the publisher’s controls and the game’s installation status in addition to Xbox privacy.
Quick comparison: which fix matches the problem?
- Friends can see your presence: review presence visibility under Xbox privacy and choose Friends or Block.
- Friends can see achievements or game history: review the corresponding Game content choices; changing presence alone is insufficient.
- Someone else can send your clip to a social network: disable the external-network permission and restrict the underlying content category.
- You already posted the clip: delete it on the destination and revoke its linked-app permission if needed.
- A child’s settings keep changing back: use the family organizer’s Xbox Family Settings controls.
- A publisher still shows gameplay data: review the publisher’s policy and Microsoft consent controls; Xbox feed privacy is a separate issue.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why are my Xbox achievements appearing on social media?
Achievements may be visible through Xbox privacy settings, or an achievement-related activity post may have been manually shared to a linked service. Review Game content visibility, disable external-network sharing, and delete any existing copy on the social network.

Can I hide game history but keep my presence visible to friends?
Usually, yes. Presence and game history are separate categories. Set presence to Friends, then set the game-history or related Game content option to Block, if that choice is available.

Does blocking Xbox activity delete an old Facebook, X, or Discord post?
No. Xbox settings control Xbox visibility and future sharing. Delete the post or media on the destination service and ask other accounts to remove independent re-shares.
What does ShareContentToExternalNetworks mean?
Microsoft defines it as permission for other users to share the owner’s Xbox LIVE content to external social networks. Look for equivalent consumer wording in Game content or activity settings and choose the most restrictive option.
Why can’t I change my child’s Xbox privacy settings?
A family organizer may control the child account. Use the organizer account or Xbox Family Settings app, review communication and sharing controls, and then verify the child profile from an account outside the family group.
Will uninstalling a game stop all Xbox activity from being visible?
No. Uninstalling can stop game or app data sharing with a publisher where applicable, but it does not replace Xbox privacy settings for achievements, presence, history, or shared content.
Should I block Xbox through my router?
No. A router or device blocker interrupts sign-in, updates, and multiplayer but cannot selectively hide activity or remove social-media copies. Use Xbox account controls and the destination service’s deletion tools.
How do I know whether Xbox or a publisher controls the information?
If it appears on your Xbox profile or activity feed, start with Xbox privacy. If it appears in a game account, leaderboard, or publisher feature, review that publisher’s privacy and consent controls as well.
The Bottom Line
Open Settings > Account > Privacy & online safety > Xbox privacy > View details & customize, review Friends, followers & clubs and Game content, and choose Friends or Block for each activity category. Disable the separate external-network sharing permission, stop manual shares, and delete copies already held by Facebook, X, Discord, or another destination. For child accounts, use the family organizer’s controls; for game-specific data, check the publisher separately.
