In Windows 11, go to Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, choose Customize search locations under Find my files, then select Modify. Clear the check box beside a folder you want excluded and confirm. Windows will update its index, and files in that location may no longer appear in indexed search results.

How do I stop Windows Search from indexing a folder?

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.

  2. Under Find my files, choose Customize search locations, then select Modify to open Indexing Options.

  3. In the list of indexed locations, clear the check box beside the folder you want to remove. Select OK, then close the remaining dialogs.

  5. Try searching for a known file. If you still need to find files in the excluded location, open that folder in File Explorer and search there. Searching This PC covers more locations but is broader and slower. Microsoft’s file-search guidance

What Classic and Enhanced indexing include

Check the setting under Find my files before changing individual locations. Windows offers two scopes; changing modes is not a substitute for checking the folder list if you want to exclude specific locations.

Mode Coverage Trade-off
Classic By default, indexes Documents, Pictures, Music, and Desktop. Narrower coverage than Enhanced. Check the indexed-location list to see which folders are selected.
Enhanced Indexes the whole PC, including user folders and files. Provides broader search coverage, but can use more system resources. Microsoft also warns whole-PC searching may affect CPU consumption and battery life.

Microsoft documents the Classic and Enhanced scopes and their resource trade-offs. Neither mode guarantees that a particular unwanted folder is excluded; use the location controls to inspect and change selected folders.

Exclude a folder or keep it searchable by name?

Removing a location can reduce which files from it appear in indexed results. If you still want Windows to find a file by its name but do not need to search inside its contents, change the indexing setting for its file type instead of excluding the entire folder.

  1. Open Indexing Options.

  2. Select Advanced > File Types.

  3. Select the file type, then choose whether Windows indexes properties only or properties and file contents.

With properties-only indexing, Windows can search filenames and other indexed properties, but not the text inside those files. Microsoft notes that not indexing file contents can reduce index size, while making some files harder to find. Microsoft’s guidance on content indexing

Where to change indexing locations in Windows 10

Microsoft lists the Windows 10 route as Start > Settings > Search > Searching Windows. Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025, so this is a settings path for an unsupported operating system, not an indication that Windows 10 remains supported. Microsoft’s Windows file-search page

What to do if search results are still incomplete

For missing files after an upgrade, Microsoft’s troubleshooting flow directs users to Advanced indexing options > Advanced > Index Settings > Troubleshoot search and indexing. Follow the wizard. This is an official troubleshooting route for upgrade-related missing files, not a guaranteed fix for every search problem. Microsoft’s Windows Search troubleshooting guidance

How large is the index?

Microsoft’s general guidance says the index is usually less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files. The proportion can be higher with many very small files (under 4 KB) or computer code. Microsoft does not date these figures on the reviewed support page, and they are not a prediction for an individual PC. Microsoft’s index-size guidance
