To stop Motion assist from appearing automatically, turn off Start in a moving vehicle in Settings. Search Settings for “Motion assist,” or open Settings > your profile > All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist. If it is already running, tap its silent notification to stop that session.
Turn off automatic Motion assist

Open the Settings app on your phone.

Search Settings for Motion assist. Alternatively, tap your profile at the top of Settings, then go to All services > Personal & device safety > Motion assist.

Turn off Start in a moving vehicle. This is the setting that lets the feature start automatically when the phone detects vehicle motion.
Google’s current support instructions call the feature Motion assist. If you have seen it described as “motion cues” or “motion sickness bubbles,” search Settings for Motion assist to find the control.

Stop a session that has already started
If the bubbles are on now, tap the feature’s silent notification to turn Motion assist off for that session. This is a session-level action; disabling Start in a moving vehicle is the persistent setting for preventing automatic starts.
Use the Quick Settings tile for manual control
You can use the Motion assist Quick Settings tile to turn the feature on or off manually from other screens. Add the tile from Motion assist settings or from the Quick Settings edit menu. You can keep it for occasional manual use or remove it if you do not want it in Quick Settings.

What Motion assist does—and what it does not do
Motion assist displays small bubbles along the edges of the screen. They move in response to the vehicle’s turns, acceleration, and braking, using the phone’s motion sensors. Google describes the overlay as a way to help coordinate visual cues with bodily motion while using a phone as a passenger; it is intended to reduce motion sickness. Google’s feature description does not provide a quantified effectiveness figure or a named study statistic.
Changing the bubbles’ opacity, color, shape, or randomization only changes their appearance. Those options do not turn off automatic starting; use Start in a moving vehicle for that.

If Motion assist does not appear in Settings
Google lists Android 17 or later and updated Google Play Services as requirements. Search Settings using the exact label Motion assist. If it is still missing, availability may depend on the feature’s rollout: Google says Android Drop features delivered through Google Play Services or app updates can arrive gradually and may take several days.
9to5Google reported a gradual rollout to Android 17 phones, including a server-side component, on September 3, 2026. Its September 14, 2026 update said the feature had broadly rolled out on Pixel and some Samsung Galaxy devices running Android 17. Those reports describe rollout observations at those dates, not a guarantee for every device, model, region, or carrier.
