To keep a church’s YouTube stream from being interrupted by a Windows update, set Windows active hours to cover setup and service, then schedule any pending restart for after the event. If the PC does restart, OBS can be launched with its --startstreaming option—but that is a recovery aid, not a guarantee that YouTube will resume the same broadcast. Test the complete setup and verify the event in YouTube Live Control Room before relying on it.
Prevent Windows from restarting during the service
Windows may need to restart to finish installing updates. Active hours and restart scheduling reduce the chance that it does so during church setup or a service. They do not permanently disable updates. Microsoft documents these controls in its Windows Update FAQ.
- Set active hours. Open Settings > Windows Update and find the active-hours control. Set the range to include volunteer setup, the service, and any planned stream checks. Windows versions can vary in how they present or configure this setting.
- Reschedule a pending restart. If Windows says a restart is required, use the restart scheduling control to choose a time after the service. Do not rely on pausing updates as a permanent fix; pausing is temporary.
- Keep a person available to check the stream. These Windows settings help avoid an update restart during the event, but they do not verify that OBS or YouTube is broadcasting correctly.
Know what OBS reconnect can—and cannot—do
OBS’s automatic reconnect setting addresses a dropped connection while OBS is running. A full Windows restart closes OBS; reconnect alone does not launch the program again. OBS documents reconnect under its Advanced settings and documents --startstreaming as a separate launch parameter. See the OBS Launch Parameters documentation and its overview guide.

Set up a tested OBS launch after reboot
OBS supports a --startstreaming launch parameter. You can add it to a Windows shortcut or use it in a scheduled launch, but you must test that launch method with your church’s OBS and YouTube configuration. It does not establish that the correct scheduled broadcast is selected or that YouTube will resume the same event.

- Create or edit an OBS shortcut. Right-click the OBS shortcut, open Properties, and find the Target field on the Shortcut tab. Add a space after the existing target and then
--startstreaming. Preserve the existing executable path and any arguments already in use. - Set the working directory for an automated launch. If using a scheduled task or another automated launch, OBS says to set the program folder as the shortcut’s Start in value or the launch’s working directory. The exact field names depend on the launch method.
- Test under supervision. Reboot the streaming PC at a non-service time and confirm OBS opens with the intended profile, scene collection, and scenes. If your church uses several configurations, OBS launch parameters also allow selecting a profile, collection, or scene; use only the options you have verified against your installed setup.
- Check YouTube after OBS opens. Confirm that the intended scheduled broadcast is selected, inspect its preview and status in Live Control Room, and verify that the audio and picture are correct. Do not assume that OBS starting a stream means the correct YouTube event is live.
A shortcut or scheduled task can help start OBS after a reboot, but neither the OBS nor YouTube documentation promises unattended recovery to the same event for every configuration. Network availability after login, the launch method, OBS settings, and YouTube broadcast settings all matter. Do not treat an untested launch option as a guarantee.
Check YouTube’s broadcast settings and test before service
In YouTube Studio, identify the scheduled broadcast the church intends to use and know whether auto-start and auto-stop are enabled. A stream key directs the encoder feed to the channel; treat it as a credential and do not share or publish it. - Set up the encoder and broadcast ahead of the service, not for the first time as the congregation is gathering.
- Check the YouTube preview before going live and monitor stream health during the event. YouTube reports stream-health errors with details and guidance.
- Have a volunteer who can confirm the intended event, picture, sound, and viewer access after any restart or reconnect.

- Sign in and let the network reconnect. Windows may need time to restore connectivity. The official guidance does not specify a guaranteed wait time, so check that the PC is online before diagnosing an initial connection failure as an OBS or stream-key problem.
- Start OBS using the method you tested. Confirm the expected OBS profile and scene collection, especially if the PC is used for multiple events or channels.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Select the intended broadcast and check its preview, status, and any displayed error message. Confirm that the event is actually live if that is what the church expects.
- Verify the viewer experience. Check picture and sound from a viewer’s perspective. If the stream is not reaching YouTube, or frames are dropping, use OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide to investigate connection, bitrate, server, firewall or security software, and network settings.
Choose prevention, recovery, or both

These approaches solve different parts of the problem, and there is no published reliability percentage for either. A church with someone available to check the broadcast may find supervised recovery workable; a church that cannot tolerate an interruption should test its full restart scenario before relying on automation.
