Most Modern Warfare 4 (MW4) stutter has one of four causes: local rendering load, shader preparation, network lag, or a game freeze/crash. The fastest fix is to identify which symptom you have, confirm the current PC requirements and updates, run MW4’s built-in benchmark, and then change one relevant setting at a time. Shader preparation is normal after an update or first launch; Activision says preparing shaders before play reduces shader work during a match, while Microsoft says its optional Advanced Shader Delivery (ASD) can shorten first-launch compilation on eligible systems. Neither shader delivery nor a new graphics setting is a universal cure.
MW4 released for PC on October 23, 2026, through Steam, Battle.net and Xbox on PC. The steps below apply to the released game, not the earlier beta workflow.
What kind of MW4 stutter are you seeing?
Start with the symptom rather than the word “stutter.” Activision uses “stuttering” in its online-lag guidance to describe skipped character movement, while a shader hitch is a short local pause as the game prepares effects. These problems can coexist, but they require different fixes.

Do not diagnose a specific defect from one average-FPS number. Repeat the same test under similar conditions and note whether the problem follows the CPU, GPU, ping or input-latency result.

Why does MW4 stutter after an update?
An update can invalidate or add shader data, so the first launch or first trip through a map may involve extra preparation. Activision’s PC guidance explains that preparing shaders ahead of gameplay reduces shader work during play and can minimize hitches. This is different from a network spike: shader work happens on your PC, whereas packet loss affects communication with the game server.
Keep MW4 fully updated before changing settings. Also update Windows and use a graphics driver appropriate for your GPU. Activision’s game-support material has cited NVIDIA driver 616.56 and Intel driver 32.0.101.8974 as game guidance; Microsoft’s later ASD announcement lists newer eligibility floors, including NVIDIA 621.01 and Intel 32.0.101.9150. Treat those as two different contexts—general game-driver guidance versus ASD eligibility—not as a promise that one number is the universal “best” driver.
Does my PC meet the released MW4 requirements?
Check the official requirements before troubleshooting advanced settings. MW4 requires an SSD with 115 GB available at launch, and mandatory updates may need additional space. The minimum and recommended tiers are separate: a machine that starts the game is not automatically a 90-FPS multiplayer system.

These are examples in Activision’s official tiers, not a shopping mandate. A laptop component with a similar name can perform differently from the stated desktop part. Activision also says Intel Arc systems need Resizable BAR, and that TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required to play. Its requirements document states that only Intel and AMD processors with the AVX instruction set are supported at this time. See the official MW4 PC requirements for the current list.
Why are my shaders still compiling?
Some shader preparation is expected. Allow the in-game preparation process to complete after a clean launch, major update or graphics-driver change instead of repeatedly quitting it. Activision’s explanation is that preloading moves shader work out of active gameplay; interrupting it can leave the game doing more work later.
The exact retail menu path for a manual “restart shader preloading” command is not established by the checked official documents, so avoid relying on unofficial cache-deletion guides or registry edits. If preparation loops indefinitely, note the update and driver versions, restart the PC once, verify the game’s files using your storefront, and then reproduce the issue with background overlays disabled. Escalate an unlisted persistent problem through Activision’s bug-report route rather than deleting random folders.

What is Advanced Shader Delivery?
ASD is an optional delivery system intended to provide precompiled shaders for supported hardware. Microsoft’s DirectX team says, “With ASD, shader compilation at first launch takes just a few seconds, compared to several minutes on a typical PC without ASD.” That is Microsoft’s qualitative comparison, not an independent benchmark or a guarantee for every computer.
Activision recommends installing the Xbox PC app if you want ASD, including on a supported PC where MW4 was obtained from another storefront. Microsoft says broader direct-storefront integration is forthcoming, so do not assume identical ASD behavior on every Steam, Battle.net or Xbox PC installation today.
ASD has stricter requirements than MW4 itself:
- Windows 11 version 24H2 or newer. MW4’s minimum requirements still permit current Windows 10, but Windows 10 does not qualify for ASD under Microsoft’s published floor.
- AMD RDNA 1–4 graphics with Adrenalin 26.6.1 or newer.
- Intel Arc B570/B580 or listed Core Ultra integrated graphics with driver 32.0.101.9150 or newer.
- NVIDIA RTX graphics with driver 621.01 or newer.
These are ASD eligibility requirements published by Microsoft, not replacement game-minimum requirements. If the game runs on your Windows 10 system, that does not mean the system can use ASD. If the Xbox PC app reports that precompiled shaders are installed, the game should have received the delivered data; that still cannot eliminate every runtime hitch caused by a new effect, a heavy scene or a local performance limit. Is my low FPS a GPU problem or shader preloading?
Use MW4’s built-in benchmark to separate a sustained performance limit from a short preparation hitch. Activision says the benchmark reports average FPS, CPU, GPU, ping and input latency, and can suggest settings. Run it more than once with the same resolution, display mode and background applications.
- Close downloads, browsers with video playback and recording or overlay tools that are not needed for the test.
- Run the benchmark and record average FPS plus the CPU, GPU, ping and input-latency readings.
- Repeat the run without changing anything. If results vary widely, investigate background activity, thermal throttling or an unstable driver before judging a graphics option.
- Change one setting or one preset, run the benchmark again, and compare the same metrics.
- Keep the change only if it improves the metric you actually care about—smooth frame delivery, image clarity or input response.
A shader hitch is usually brief and tied to first use of an effect or scene. A GPU-limited result tends to remain low across comparable runs, especially when a resolution increase or expensive visual feature is enabled. A CPU-limited result may show the CPU as the dominant workload while lowering resolution does little. The benchmark’s labels are evidence for a direction, not proof of a single defective component.

There is no universally correct preset because the best trade-off depends on resolution, refresh rate, hardware and whether you prioritize clarity or responsiveness. Activision lists more than 800 PC customization options across graphics, gameplay, input, interface and other categories; that is not a count of graphics-only controls.

Use this order so each change has a measurable purpose:
- Start with the benchmark’s suggested preset. Apply it only as a baseline, then check whether it changes the CPU/GPU result and frame pacing.
- Test ray tracing. MW4 supports ray tracing in Campaign, Multiplayer and DMZ. If the benchmark shows a GPU limit and ray tracing is enabled, compare it off or at a lower level. Do not assume ray tracing is responsible for a hitch that appears before a match while shaders are compiling.
- Reduce expensive shading, shadow, reflection and screen-space effects. These settings can lower GPU work, but each reduction changes image quality differently. Change one group at a time and keep notes.
- Compare an upscaler at your output resolution. The PC feature list includes AMD FSR Redstone, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5, Intel XeSS 3 and Filmic SMAA T2X. Support and image quality vary by GPU and mode; the available list does not establish one option as universally best.
- Check resolution and render scale. Lowering the internal workload can help a GPU-limited result, while lowering it on a CPU-limited result may barely change FPS and can make the image softer.
- Set a sensible frame-rate limit only after measuring. A cap can reduce unnecessary GPU swings and improve consistency on a display with a fixed refresh rate, but no source here establishes a universal cap value. Choose one that your repeated benchmark runs can sustain.
Frame generation, VRAM-slider values and a particular upscaler mode should not be presented as guaranteed fixes. Judge them by repeated benchmark results and the visual artifacts or latency you observe on your own system.
Does the Xbox PC app help on Steam or Battle.net?
It can help only when your PC and software meet Microsoft’s ASD requirements. Activision recommends installing the Xbox PC app for ASD even when the game came from another supported PC storefront, but Microsoft’s rollout documentation does not promise identical current integration for every storefront. Installing the app cannot turn an unsupported Windows version, GPU or driver into an ASD-compatible system.

For a normal shader-preparation problem, first let MW4’s own process complete and verify that the game is current. Use ASD as an optional path when the operating-system, GPU and driver checks all pass—not as a reason to downgrade a stable game driver or make unsupported registry changes.
Is this frame drop actually packet loss?
It may be network lag when other players or your own character snap backward, shots register late, or movement skips while the local frame rate remains steady. Activision recommends checking ping and packet loss and trying a wired Ethernet connection. A cable can improve an unstable wireless path; it cannot repair local shader compilation, a GPU bottleneck or a full game freeze.
- Compare the in-game ping and connection indicators during the incident with the benchmark’s ping reading.
- Pause large downloads, cloud synchronization and high-bitrate streaming on the same connection.
- Try wired Ethernet directly to the router if practical, then repeat the same mode and map.
- If packet loss persists, restart networking equipment and investigate the internet connection before buying new PC hardware. Router quality-of-service features are a later option for a demonstrated household-bandwidth problem, not a universal MW4 stutter fix.
If movement and hit registration are normal but the camera visibly hitches and the benchmark reports a GPU or CPU limit, stay on the local-performance branch.

What should I do if MW4 freezes or crashes?
A freeze or crash needs stability troubleshooting, not just graphics tuning. Activision’s PC support recommends confirming the requirements, ensuring adequate cooling, closing unnecessary background applications, checking overlays and recording tools that may interfere, and using recommended graphics drivers.
- Confirm the SSD has the required free space and that Windows, MW4 and the graphics driver are current.
- Watch temperatures and fan behavior during a repeatable workload. Clean airflow and remove an aggressive overclock or undervolt while diagnosing instability.
- Disable one overlay or recorder at a time, including chat, GPU-control and capture overlays, then retest.
- Verify the game installation through Steam, Battle.net or the Xbox PC app.
- If the crash remains, record the map, mode, error text, driver version and whether shader preparation had just run. Use Activision’s PC crash-report route.
Avoid blind BIOS changes, registry “optimizers,” deleting arbitrary shader directories and paid driver utilities. They are not established official cures and can make recovery harder.

Buy hardware only after the symptom and benchmark point to it. MW4 requires an SSD and 115 GB available at launch; if the game is on a hard drive or the SSD is nearly full, a suitable internal SSD is a prerequisite, not a magic shader repair. Activision does not require NVMe specifically, so verify the drive form factor and interface supported by your PC before purchasing.
Moving from 8 GB to 16 GB of system RAM aligns with the recommended tier and can reduce pressure from the game plus background applications, but it will not fix packet loss or an unsupported driver. A graphics card around the published recommended examples may help a sustained GPU-limited result at your target resolution, yet the 90-FPS figure is a stated target for multiplayer on High settings—not a guarantee for every map, mode or display.
An Ethernet cable is a reasonable low-cost purchase only when ping or packet loss is the identified problem. Do not buy a router, GPU or storage device before the benchmark and symptom checks establish that the corresponding bottleneck exists.

When should I report the problem to Activision?
Activision’s October 27, 2026 running known-issues page did not display a general PC shader-stutter issue. That absence does not prove that no player is affected; it only means the issue was not listed there at that check. Recheck the page because entries and driver guidance can change.

Report a persistent, reproducible problem that remains after updates, requirement checks, benchmark comparisons and overlay isolation through Activision’s bug-report route. For an actual crash or freeze, use the PC crash-report route and include the exact error, hardware, Windows build, driver, storefront, mode and whether the issue occurs during shader preparation or active play.
Practical diagnosis checklist
- Classify the symptom: shader hitch, sustained FPS drop, network lag, freeze or crash.
- Update MW4, Windows and the graphics driver; note the versions.
- Confirm an SSD with at least 115 GB available, plus the correct RAM, VRAM, CPU, GPU, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot requirements.
- Run the built-in benchmark twice and record FPS, CPU, GPU, ping and input latency.
- Let ordinary shader preparation finish; do not assume beta-era Steam behavior applies unchanged to the retail game.
- For ASD, verify Windows 11 24H2 or newer, supported hardware and Microsoft’s current driver floors.
- Change one graphics variable at a time, starting with ray tracing, shadows, reflections, screen-space effects and upscaling.
- For rubber-banding or hit delay, check packet loss and try wired Ethernet.
- For freezes, check cooling, overlays, background apps and installation integrity.
- Report persistent unlisted issues with reproducible details instead of using unofficial registry or cache “fixes.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can shader compilation damage my graphics card or SSD?
Normal shader preparation is a software workload and is not described by Activision or Microsoft as hardware damage. It can temporarily increase CPU, GPU or storage activity, so adequate cooling and free SSD space still matter. A crash, overheating shutdown or drive error is a separate stability issue that needs hardware diagnostics.
Why does MW4 stutter only in one map or game mode?
Different maps and modes can load different materials, lighting, reflections and effects. A shader or rendering cost that is absent in the benchmark or another mode may appear when that content is first encountered. Compare the same map and mode after preparation, then use the benchmark and one-setting-at-a-time changes to determine whether the issue persists.

No. Reinstallation is not a general shader solution and can consume substantial time and storage. First allow preparation to complete, verify the installation, check updates and drivers, and document whether the process loops or the game crashes before escalating.
Can lowering ping increase my FPS?
No. Ping measures communication delay, while FPS measures local rendering throughput. A better connection can stop rubber-banding and delayed hit registration, but it will not raise a benchmark’s GPU- or CPU-limited frame rate.
