First work out what is moving: the insole against the shoe, or your foot against the insole or boot. For an insole that shifts, reseat it flat with its heel in the right position, check its shape and size against the shoe, and follow the maker’s instructions about removing the factory liner. If the fit is right but the insole still migrates, try removable double-sided tape or hook-and-loop strips. Trim only an insole specifically designed for trimming; don’t cut or permanently glue a structured or prescribed orthosis.
Identify what is moving
Take off the boot and inspect the insole before changing anything. If the insole has crept forward, shifted sideways, curled, or bunched at the toes, the problem is the insert-to-shoe fit or its grip against the shoe. If the insole remains flat and in place while your foot slides over it or your heel lifts, the problem is more likely the foot-to-insole or foot-to-boot fit. Those are different problems, and anchoring a stationary insole will not fix a moving foot.
For foot movement, check whether the boot fits your foot and whether its lacing and socks suit the conditions. Heel-lock lacing is sometimes suggested for heel movement, but it addresses the foot inside the boot—not an insole shifting against the shoe. Don’t tighten laces so much that they cause pressure or discomfort.
Reseat the insole and check the fit
- Check the liner. Remove the factory liner only if it is removable and the replacement insole’s instructions say to take it out. Some instructions for SOLE footbeds, for example, say to remove the factory sock liner if possible. Do not force out a liner that appears integrated into the boot’s construction.
- Place the insole flat. Align its heel with the back of the boot and smooth it forward so it lies flat, without folds or curled edges. SOLE’s footbed instructions likewise emphasize a flat fit without bunching.
- Check the footprint and room. Look for excess length or width that lets the forefoot fold, or a shape that does not sit properly against the boot’s footprint. Check that your toes still have room and that the boot fastens normally. A replacement that is too thick can crowd the toes or raise the heel enough to affect its containment.
- Confirm the heel and arch sit correctly. The heel should be seated in the insole’s heel area, and any structured arch should sit where the product is designed to support your foot. A heel cup may help position the heel, but it does not necessarily keep the entire insert from sliding against the shoe.
Orthotix Healthcare’s fit guidance covers flatness, heel position, toe room, and liner removal; these are practical checks, not a guarantee that a particular insole will suit every boot. Follow the instructions for your own product when they differ.

Trim only an insole that is made to be trimmed
Trimming is not a universal fix. Check the insole’s instructions first. For a full-length, trim-to-fit product whose maker permits trimming, use the removable original liner as a template. Make small cuts at the toe or forefoot, then put the insole back in the boot and check the fit before cutting more. SOLE’s footbed instructions say to use the factory liner as a guide when trimming is needed and to trim only the toe end.
Do not cut a custom, prescribed, posted, structural, or pressure-relief orthosis unless the clinician or manufacturer specifically directs you to. Changing its shape can alter its intended function. Orthotix Healthcare also cautions that only some insoles can be trimmed, typically at the forefoot, and that altering a structured or prescribed device may change how it works.

- Hiking Insoles for Men and Women: The arch is medium and cushioned, not stiff. They are soft enough for comfort over ten miles, but firm enough to keep your foot steady on rocks and roots. You will really notice the difference on long downhills
- Up to 56% Shock Absorption: When you carry a full pack, every step can feel heavier. Our shock layer takes in up to 56% of impact before it reaches your knees and lower back, so you stay comfortable all day
- Up to 47% Energy Return: The arch returns up to 47% of the energy you put into each step, rather than just absorbing it. It also helps take pressure off your knees when you walk downhill. By the end of a long day, your legs will feel the difference
- Dry Feet on Tough Climbs: A breathable cover and non-sweat layer pull heat and moisture away from your skin, keeping your boots drier on steep climbs and in warm weather. Wet feet cause blisters, and this helps prevent them
- Sized for Men and Women who Hike: Use the size chart to find your fit. Place your boots' insoles on top and trim around the front for an exact fit. These insoles are light enough for trail runners and tough enough for backpacking boots
Use removable fasteners if a well-fitted insole still shifts
If the insole is the right size, lies flat, and still moves against the shoe, removable double-sided insole tape or hook-and-loop strips are options to test. Protalus recommends removable tape or Velcro strips, and a Dr. Scholl’s user manual hosted by Amazon mentions double-sided tape and Velcro pads. That manual’s exact product version is not established, so check whether its advice applies to your model.
- Use a removable product so you can still take the insole out to clean, dry, or replace it.
- Apply it only where the insole and shoe instructions permit, and check that the insole remains flat after fastening.
- Avoid rigid or permanent adhesive, which can damage footwear or make the insole difficult to remove. Avoid sharp fasteners as well.
These are practical options, not proven winners: no comparative testing establishes that tape or hook-and-loop works best across different boots and insoles. Vendor guidance is useful for product-specific instructions but is not independent testing.

Know when the insole-and-boot combination is wrong
An insole that stays put is not a good solution if it makes the boot fit poorly. Reconsider the combination if a thicker or stacked insole crowds your toes, causes heel lift, makes the boot tight, or requires excessive fastening tension. Try a compatible insole and boot combination rather than forcing the fit.
Stop using a setup that causes persistent pressure, numbness, irritation, or rubbing. If instability or symptoms continue—or the insole is prescribed or structurally complex—ask a qualified footwear or orthotic professional for guidance.
