If your headphones keep connecting to the wrong phone, tablet, or computer, first identify what is changing the connection: Apple automatic switching, Google Fast Pair Audio switch, headphone multipoint, or the headset’s reconnect behavior. The fix depends on which feature is responsible. For supported AirPods, set the preferred Apple device to “When Last Connected to This [Device].” For supported Fast Pair headphones, turn off “Use audio switch” in Android settings. Other models may require a multipoint setting in the headphone app or disconnecting the unwanted source.
Identify why your headphones are changing devices
Notice which device loses audio and which one takes over, and when it happens: when playback starts, a call comes in, another device begins playing, or the headphones power on. Those clues can help distinguish a switching feature from an ordinary reconnection. The trigger is not universal, and more than one feature may be involved.
- Apple automatic switching: Supported AirPods can move between Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Google Fast Pair Audio switch: Supported headphones can switch audio sources associated with the same Google Account.
- Multipoint: Some headphones maintain Bluetooth connections to two devices, allowing audio to move between sources.
- Reconnect behavior: Some headphones reconnect to a recently used device when powered on.
Before changing settings, note the exact headphone model and the devices involved. The controls and available features vary by product.
Stop supported AirPods from switching automatically
On an iPhone or iPad, connect the AirPods, then open Settings, tap the AirPods’ name, and choose Connect to This [device] > When Last Connected to This [device]. This changes the automatic-switch preference for that Apple device; it does not prevent you from manually selecting the AirPods on another device.

Apple documents the equivalent choice on Mac. Its automatic-switching support page lists AirPods 2, AirPods 3, AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation, all AirPods Pro models, and all AirPods Max models. Apple’s stated requirements include current operating-system versions, the same Apple Account on the devices, and two-factor authentication. Turn off Google Fast Pair Audio switch
On an Android device, open Settings > Connected devices, select the headphones’ settings, tap Audio switch, and turn off Use audio switch. Google says Audio switch is on by default.

Google’s stated requirements are supported headphones paired through Fast Pair to the same Google Account on each audio source, plus Android 8 or later with Google Play Services. If the Audio switch option is missing, the headphones or device setup may not meet those requirements. Check Google’s Audio switch instructions.
Check multipoint and connection-priority settings
Multipoint is a headphone feature, not a universal Bluetooth setting. On supported Android headphones, Google’s path is Settings > Connected devices > [headphones] settings > Multipoint. Google advises stopping media on the first device and starting it on the second when you want to change media sources. If you want the headphones to remain connected to only one source, check whether the model offers a multipoint control and turn it off if available.

Availability and controls depend on the exact model. Sony says only specific products support multipoint; consult the product information or the Sony app rather than assuming the setting exists on every headset. See Google’s multipoint guidance and Sony’s multipoint support information.

A headset that reconnects when it powers on may appear to be switching by itself. Sony documents headphones reconnecting automatically to the most recently connected device, and explains how to change the connection through the relevant device’s Bluetooth settings or the Sony app. Exact behavior and menu labels vary by model and operating system.

If a device you do not want keeps taking the connection, disconnect the headphones from that device in its Bluetooth settings. As a fallback, turn Bluetooth off on that device when you are not using it. For model-specific steps, use the headphone maker’s current support page; Sony’s connection instructions illustrate one manufacturer’s approach, not a universal Bluetooth menu.

Troubleshoot in this order
- Record the pattern: Identify the device losing audio, the device taking over, and whether the change coincides with playback, a call, or powering on.
- Check the likely device-level feature: For supported AirPods, choose When Last Connected to This [device]. For supported Google Fast Pair headphones, turn off Use audio switch.
- Check the headphone’s own controls: Look in the maker’s app or support page for multipoint or connection-priority settings. The model may not support them.
- Remove the unwanted source from the connection: Disconnect the headphones from that device, or turn off its Bluetooth when it is not needed.
- Confirm model-specific instructions: If your menus do not match, consult the manufacturer’s current guide for the exact headset and software.
