There is no single “Google desktop app” listening switch established by the available documentation. The fix depends on what you mean: browser-based Google Search voice search, voice typing in Google Docs, or audio saved to your Google Account. To block live microphone access, check the browser’s permission for the Google site and your operating system’s microphone permission for that browser. If the wrong microphone is selected, change the browser’s input device. For Docs voice typing, say “Stop listening.” Google’s Voice and Audio Activity control affects saved recordings, not all live audio processing.

First identify which Google feature is using the microphone

“Google desktop app” can refer to different things. The available desktop guidance concerns Google Search voice search in a browser and Google Docs voice typing. Google’s general app-permissions guidance is for Android, so it should not be treated as instructions for a desktop app.

  • Google Search voice search: Runs in a browser. Check both the Google site’s microphone permission in that browser and the operating system’s microphone permission for the browser.
  • Google Docs voice typing: A feature within Docs in a browser. Its stop command ends voice typing, but does not turn off microphone access for the browser or other apps.
  • Saved audio in your Google Account: Voice and Audio Activity is an account-history control. It concerns saving specified recordings, not permission for a browser or device to access the live microphone.

If you mean a different named Google application, identify that product before changing settings; the controls described here do not establish a universal setting for every Google product.

Stop browser-based Google Search from accessing the microphone

For voice search on Google in a desktop browser, review two permission layers: the permission for the Google site in the browser, and the operating system’s microphone privacy permission for that browser. A site permission may allow access while the operating system blocks the browser, or the operating system may allow the browser while the site is blocked.

  1. Check the Google site’s permission in your browser. Open the browser’s site or privacy settings for the Google page you use and review its microphone access. To prevent voice search from accessing the mic, block or deny permission for that site. Exact labels and navigation vary by browser version.
  2. Check the operating system’s microphone permission. Make sure the browser itself is allowed to use the microphone. On Windows, community troubleshooting guidance points to the setting that allows desktop apps to access the microphone; labels and location can vary by Windows version. On macOS, the cited community guidance directs users to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone and to check permission for the browser. These are troubleshooting directions, not a formal Google product manual.
  3. Reload the Google page and test voice search. If access is blocked at either layer, the site should not be able to use the browser’s microphone for voice search. Restore the relevant permission if you want to use the feature again.

Changing a permission for one Google site is narrower than revoking microphone access for the entire browser in the operating system. The site-level choice affects that site in that browser; the operating-system choice can affect other sites and services using the same browser.

Choose the intended microphone when Google uses the wrong one

Permission and device selection are separate checks. Allowing microphone access does not ensure the browser is using the microphone you intended.

  1. Open the browser’s microphone input or device settings.
  2. Select the intended microphone as the input device. The exact control and label depend on the browser and version.
  3. Return to Google Search and test voice search. If the wrong device is still active, check whether the operating system or another audio setting is routing the browser to a different input.

If you want to prevent Google Search from using any microphone rather than correct the input, block the Google site’s microphone permission or deny microphone access to the browser at the operating-system level.

Stop voice typing in Google Docs

Google Accessibility Help says to stop voice typing, say “Stop listening.” This stops the Docs voice-typing feature; it does not, by itself, disable microphone access globally. Google says the browser controls the speech-to-text service, so browser and operating-system microphone permissions remain the broader controls if you want to block access beyond Docs.

Stop saving audio to your Google Account

Google describes Voice and Audio Activity as optional and off unless enabled. Turning it off stops saving the Assistant interaction recordings covered by that setting to the Google Account. It does not stop Google services from processing audio when you speak to them, and it does not block a browser or device from accessing a live microphone.

Turning the setting off also does not delete recordings saved earlier. Google says you can review and delete saved recordings in Web & App Activity. Treat disabling future saving and deleting existing history as separate actions. Google notes that the settings are being updated, so the labels may differ from the ones shown in current help material.

Google site microphone permission That site in the browser Allows or blocks the site’s live microphone access through the browser Restore the site permission to use voice search again
Operating-system microphone permission for the browser The browser on that operating-system user or device Allows or blocks the browser’s microphone access more broadly Restore the browser’s permission in system microphone privacy settings
Browser microphone input selection The browser’s selected input device Chooses which microphone the browser uses; it does not itself grant permission Select the intended input device in browser settings
Docs voice-typing stop command Voice typing in Docs Stops the feature; it does not disable microphone access globally Start voice typing again if needed
Voice and Audio Activity Google Account audio history covered by the setting Stops saving the described recordings when turned off; does not stop all live audio processing Review and delete earlier saved recordings separately in Web & App Activity
