This does not remove photos and videos already backed up, so they will keep using storage until you delete them. If you need to reclaim space, first check what is consuming your shared Google storage, then preserve any files you want before deleting cloud copies.
1. Turn off Google Photos Backup on each device
Backup is controlled per device. Turning it off on one phone stops future uploads from that phone, but another phone or tablet signed in to the same account may continue uploading.
- Open the Google Photos app.
- Tap your profile picture or initial.
- Open Photos settings, then Backup.
- Switch Backup off.
On iPhone or iPad, open Google Photos settings and go to Backup; labels and menu placement may vary by app version. Check every device that backs up to the account. Google’s instructions for the setting are in Google Photos Help.
Turning Backup off prevents new uploads from that device. It does not delete the existing cloud library, and the app can still show pictures stored only on the device.

2. Check what is using your Google storage
Google storage is shared across Photos, Drive, and Gmail. A full account may be caused by any combination of them, so check usage before deleting photos.
- Open the Google One storage manager or the storage-management option in Google Photos.
- Review usage by service and the suggested cleanup items.
- Choose the service or files you actually want to clear, and read the deletion confirmation before proceeding.
A standard Google Account includes up to 15 GB shared among Google Photos, Drive, and Gmail; account type and storage plans can change the amount. If the account reaches its limit, new Photos backups can stop and other Google services may be affected. Disabling Backup does not free storage already in use. 3. Remove backed-up photos without losing the local copies
Deleting items from the cloud is different from turning Backup off. If you want to keep a separate copy, download and verify an archive before deleting anything. Google Takeout can export data, but it cannot recover content that has already been permanently deleted.
- Turn Backup off on every device where you want local files to remain.
- In a browser, go to photos.google.com and delete only the backed-up items you intend to remove.
- While connected to Wi-Fi, wait a few minutes, then close and reopen the Google Photos app so it can refresh.
- Leave Backup off on devices that still have local copies you do not want uploaded again.
Google notes that deleted items may still appear in the app because a local copy remains on the device. Check an item’s backup status rather than assuming that its appearance in the app means it is stored in the cloud. Deleted Google Photos content generally remains in Trash before permanent deletion; Google’s cited cleanup guidance gives 30 days. Review the confirmation and Trash contents, since deletion behavior can differ across Google services. Once content is permanently deleted, Takeout is not a recovery method.
4. Know which backups count toward storage
Backup quality and upload date affect whether some Photos items count against the account quota:

- Original quality: backups count toward storage regardless of date.
- Storage saver (formerly High quality) and Express: uploads made before June 1, 2021 do not count under Google’s stated rules; later uploads count.
- Older Pixel devices: an exception may apply to qualifying uploads. Check Google’s specific policy for your device instead of assuming all Pixel uploads are unlimited.
These rules are not a reason to assume a library is free: quality, date, and any qualifying device policy matter. Google’s current explanation is in Google Photos Help.

Google’s storage manager can help identify cleanup options, while Google One is an option for people who prefer to keep backups and need more quota. If an account remains over quota, Google says content may be deleted after two years; this is a prolonged-over-quota policy, not an immediate result of turning Backup off. What about Google Photos backup from a computer?
Google’s desktop help page states that Drive for desktop ended support for Google Photos backup on August 10, 2026. That date has passed, so its former folder-setting workflow is not a current way to start or manage Photos backup. The mobile Google Photos Backup control is separate. For desktop options, consult Google’s current Drive for desktop help.
