During a trip, dim the screen, try dark theme if your phone has an OLED or AMOLED display, and keep the phone cool. If Maps is draining power in the background, review its location permission and background-dependent features. Don’t turn off location while navigating: Maps needs it for turn-by-turn directions.
Find out when Google Maps is using battery
Open your phone’s battery-use screen and check Google Maps’ activity. The exact menu and whether it separates foreground from background use vary by phone manufacturer and operating-system version. Compare the timing with your own use: high use during a long navigation session has different likely causes from background activity when you are not using the app.
Google says, “During navigation, Google Maps tracks your location to give turn-by-turn directions.” Location updates and a lit display are therefore relevant power demands during a trip. Google also notes that low battery and some battery-saver behaviors can coincide with lost GPS signal; certain devices may disable GPS when the battery is low, the screen is off, or Maps is in the background. Reduce battery use during navigation
- Dim the display. Lower brightness or use adaptive brightness. Google’s Navigation SDK power guidance recommends reducing screen brightness, though it does not quantify savings for the consumer Maps app.
- Try dark theme on an OLED or AMOLED phone. Google’s developer guidance says dark mode can help on these displays; the benefit varies with screen type and brightness. It is not a guaranteed or quantified saving for Google Maps.
- Keep the phone cool. Avoid covering it in a way that traps heat while navigating. Google’s power guidance identifies device temperature as a factor to manage.
- Use a compatible car charger on a long drive if needed. Check that its connector and charging output work with your phone. A charger supplies power; it does not reduce Maps’ energy use.
These recommendations draw on Google’s Navigation SDK power-consumption guidance, which is written for developers and is not a controlled battery test of the consumer Maps app. No reliable figure establishes how much battery Maps uses or how much these adjustments save.

Limit Maps’ location access when it is idle
If the battery-use screen shows Maps active in the background, review its per-app location permission and choose the narrowest access that still supports the features you use. Menu labels and available choices can differ by OS version. Restricting access may affect features that rely on background location, while active turn-by-turn navigation still needs location.
On iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Select Google Maps and review its location access. Choose an option that fits your needs; the choices can vary by iOS version.
Apple explains that background location access can support reminders, and that turning off Location Services limits location features in the foreground and background. See Apple’s Location Services and privacy guidance.

On Android
Review Google Maps’ location permission in the app’s system settings. Separately, Android’s Location Accuracy setting is system-wide; it combines available GPS, Wi-Fi, cellular, and sensor inputs and is not the same as Maps’ app permission. Google lists these paths:
- Android 12 and later: Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy.
- Android 11 and earlier: Settings > Location > Advanced > Location Accuracy.

Check features before restricting background access
Consider whether you use features such as Location Sharing before limiting background location; some Maps features may need it. Don’t assume Timeline is the cause: Google says Timeline is off by default and has separate settings, with collection frequency that varies by activity. Details are in Google’s location-data information.
Android’s background-location limits are platform behavior, not a measurement of Google Maps’ battery use. Android 8.0 (API level 26) and later may deliver background location updates only a few times each hour, according to Android Developers’ background-location guidance, last updated February 26, 2026.

Use offline maps for poor connectivity—not as a battery fix
Downloading an area can help when connectivity is unreliable or unavailable, but Google’s instructions do not promise that offline maps reduce battery drain. Offline directions do not include live traffic; travel-time estimates assume no traffic congestion.
- Open Google Maps and tap your profile picture.
- Choose Offline Maps, then Select Your Own Map.
- Position the map rectangle over the area you need and tap Download.
Google also describes downloading a map from a searched destination. Its guide, published March 20, 2023, covers Android and iOS and says offline maps can be set to update automatically; when enabled, map data updates about once every two weeks. See Google’s offline maps guide.
