To stop the Windows Copilot app from launching when you sign in, go to Settings > Apps > Startup and switch Copilot off. If it is not listed, check Task Manager and the Windows Startup folders. These steps change sign-in startup behavior; they do not disable Copilot features inside Microsoft 365 apps.
Turn off Copilot in Windows startup settings

Open Settings > Apps > Startup.

Find Copilot in the app list and set its switch to Off. Microsoft Support says this prevents the app from starting automatically.
This switch is available for apps registered with Windows as startup tasks. Labels and available controls can vary by Windows build, app packaging, device configuration, or organizational management.
If Copilot is missing from the Startup list
Microsoft’s startup guidance also recommends checking the Startup folders when an app is not listed. A shortcut may be present, but not every Copilot installation uses these folders.

Check Task Manager

Right-click Start and open Task Manager.

Select Startup apps.

If Copilot appears, select it and choose Disable.
Inspect the Startup folders

Press Win+R, enter
shell:startup, and press Enter to inspect startup shortcuts for your user account. -
To inspect shortcuts for all users, press Win+R, enter

If either folder contains a Copilot shortcut, remove that shortcut.
Distinguish automatic startup from a Copilot shortcut
If Copilot opens only after you press a key combination or the Copilot key, that is a manual launch rather than sign-in startup. Microsoft’s Copilot app guidance identifies the Copilot key and Windows key+C as ways to launch the app. To adjust shortcut behavior, open Copilot and go to Account > Settings > Copilot Keyboard Shortcuts.

Uninstall the Windows Copilot app if you want it removed
Turning off startup leaves the app installed. To remove the app instead, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Copilot > More options (…) > Uninstall. Uninstalling removes the Windows Copilot app; it is a different action from switching off its startup entry.

Copilot features in Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and other Microsoft 365 apps have separate controls. Changing Windows startup settings does not disable those features. Microsoft cautions that changing account privacy settings to disable Copilot in Office can also turn off other connected experiences, so check the specific app and intended effect before changing those settings.
