For a temporary break, use Focus mode; for a daily usage cap, set an app timer; and for a broader quiet period, use Do Not Disturb (DND). These controls affect different things, so choose the one that matches what you want to block.
Choose the control that fits the interruption

For the narrowest change, start with the app’s notification categories. Choose Focus mode when you want selected apps unavailable for a while, an app timer when you want a daily cap, or DND when you need a wider quiet window.
Turn off or reduce notifications from one app
- Open Settings and go to Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the app you want to change.
- Turn off all notifications, or adjust the categories the app provides if you only want to stop certain kinds of alerts.
You can also touch and hold a notification to open that app’s notification settings. Menu names and available categories vary by phone. If the route above does not match your device, search Settings for “notifications” or use the notification shortcut.

Pause selected apps with Focus mode
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls > Focus mode.
- Choose the apps you want to pause.
- Turn Focus mode on, or set a schedule if you want it to activate at particular times.
While Focus mode is active, selected apps cannot be used and do not send notifications. If you need access temporarily, use Take a break to unpause them for a chosen interval. Availability and labels can vary by device. See Google’s Digital Wellbeing guide for its Focus mode instructions.
Set a daily limit with an app timer
- Open Settings > Digital Wellbeing & parental controls > App timers.
- Select the app you want to limit.
- Set the daily time limit.
When the limit is reached, Android closes the app and dims its icon. The timer resets at midnight. You can remove the timer to use the app again before then. Some work or school accounts may not support app timers.

Use Do Not Disturb for a broader quiet period
For a quick quiet period, turn on Do Not Disturb from Quick Settings. To configure what gets through, open the phone’s Modes or Do Not Disturb settings and choose filters for people, apps, alarms, and other interruptions. Depending on the device, DND can last until you turn it off, run for a set interval, or ask each time; modes can also be scheduled.
Some documented Modes steps apply only to Android 14 and later, and settings differ by device. Critical notifications can still appear. Google’s Modes and Do Not Disturb guide describes the available filters and setup.

Find alerts you dismissed or manage notification bursts
Notification history can help you find recent or dismissed alerts and manage them later. Some devices also support notification snoozing, which must be enabled in settings before you can use it.
On supported devices, notification cooldown reduces sounds and pop-ups during a burst of alerts. Calls, alarms, priority conversations, and emergency alerts can be exceptions. History, snoozing, and cooldown are not available on every device; Google’s notification guidance explains the controls and their availability.
