For AI chats and other sensitive pages, use a browser profile with only extensions you have checked.
A broad permission such as “read and change all your data on the websites you visit” describes what an extension may be able to access. It does not, by itself, prove that the extension records or uploads page content. Collection practices differ by product, browser, and feature.
Understand what an access warning does—and does not—mean
Ad blockers need to interact with pages to identify and hide ads. Depending on the permission and browser, that can give an extension technical access to page URLs and content visible on those pages. Adblock Plus explains: “This means Adblock Plus can see the URL of the pages you open.” Its help page also says it does not track browsing history or record form entries. Adblock Plus Help Center: About Adblock Plus Permissions.
Capability is not the same as collection or transmission. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) makes this distinction in its Privacy Badger guidance: a permission warning alone cannot tell you whether an extension secretly uploads browsing data. To judge a specific blocker, look at its current disclosures and settings, not just the warning—or a claim that a permission is harmless.

What selected ad blockers disclose
The details below reflect statements made by each product or project, not an independent security audit. They may differ by browser, platform, version, and feature. Confirm that the listing and publisher match the extension installed in your browser.
| Blocker | What its disclosure says | Controls or qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Adblock Plus | Its permissions help page says the extension can see opened page URLs and technically see page content. It says it does not track browsing history or record form entries. The broader privacy policy describes product-specific collection for operation and improvement. | Details can vary among the browser extension, mobile product, and optional features. Read the policy for the exact product: Adblock Plus Privacy Policy. |
| AdBlock | An optional anonymous filter-list usage setting can collect subscribed filter lists, which rules blocked or hid resources, visited-site domain names, browser language, and information about certain site tags. Its permissions page says it can technically see forms or tab activity, while stating that it does not collect or store that information. | The usage setting is documented as disabled by default. If enabled, turn it off using the steps below. AdBlock’s opt-in usage and data collection disclosure; About AdBlock permissions. |
| Ghostery | Its policy says the extension sends daily basic telemetry about general settings and browser, operating system, language, and country; extra telemetry is sent if the user opts in. It says tracker reports sent to WhoTracks.Me concern observed tracking behavior, not the observer. Its phishing and malware feature checks visited URLs using a partial checksum rather than sending a full URL. Its Chrome disclosure describes aggregate, non-identifiable tracker-behavior signals and website-content handling limited to technical tracker metadata. | These are Ghostery’s own disclosures; check the policy and browser-specific disclosure for the version you use: Ghostery Privacy Policy and Chrome Web Store Limited Use Disclosure. |
| uBlock Origin | The project policy says, “uBO does not collect any data of any kind.” It says the extension has no home server or analytics/telemetry hooks and connects remotely to update filter lists and related assets. | The policy is displayed as last edited May 1, 2023. This statement concerns uBlock Origin, not similarly named products. uBlock Origin project privacy policy. |
| Privacy Badger | EFF says Privacy Badger does not share browsing data unless the user chooses to share it, for example by filing a broken-site report. It receives periodic learning updates and sends Global Privacy Control (GPC) and Do Not Track (DNT) signals; its primary function is blocking third-party tracking. | For details and current disclosures, see EFF’s Privacy Badger page. |
Turn off optional data collection in AdBlock
AdBlock’s documented opt-out path is:
- Click the AdBlock icon in the browser toolbar.
- Open the gear or settings control.
- Go to the General tab.
- Clear “Allow AdBlock to collect anonymous filter list usage and data.”

Audit an extension before deciding whether to keep it
- Identify the installed extension. Open your browser’s extensions or add-ons manager and note the exact name and publisher. Make sure the installed listing corresponds to the publisher’s official product; similar names can refer to different software.
- Review the permissions in context. Note whether the extension can access all sites, then ask whether that capability fits its ad-blocking function. Do not treat access alone as proof of upload.
- Check the current policy and settings. Look for terms such as “telemetry,” “analytics,” “usage data,” “browsing history,” “page content,” “URLs,” “reports,” “opt-in,” and “retention.” Review any diagnostic, anonymous-use, or product-improvement switches.
- Disable optional sharing or remove the extension. Turn off controls you do not want. If the policy or available controls do not meet your needs, disable or uninstall the extension, then confirm it is gone from the extensions list.
- Recheck after updates. Extension behavior, browser APIs, settings, and privacy policies can change. Revisit the installed version’s disclosures instead of relying on an old comparison.
Protect sensitive AI conversations with a separate profile
Create a dedicated browser profile for AI services and other sensitive sites, and install only extensions you have checked. This reduces the number of extensions with page access. It does not guarantee privacy from the AI provider, browser vendor, operating system, or network, and it does not establish what any one extension does with data it can access.
