Don’t spray water into the unit or use bleach or abrasive cleaners on its case. If the smell persists after routine cleaning, check the manual for your exact model or contact Midea rather than attempting an undocumented internal repair.
Clean the accessible parts safely
- Switch off and unplug the dehumidifier. Clean only user-accessible areas described in the owner’s manual. Midea’s MAD dehumidifier manual instructs users to disconnect power before cleaning.
- Wash the bucket. Remove it and wash it with clean water and a little mild detergent. Swish the solution around, empty the bucket, and rinse it. The cited manual recommends cleaning the bucket every few weeks and says not to put it in a dishwasher. It explains that cleaning helps prevent mold, mildew, and bacteria growth; residue or microbial growth in a neglected bucket could contribute to a musty smell, but this does not diagnose the cause of a particular unit’s odor.
- Clean the removable air filter. If your model’s manual identifies the filter as washable, remove it, wash it with clean water, and let it dry before reinstalling it. Do not operate the unit without its filter. Follow your model’s directions if they differ.
- Clear dust from the grilles. Use a vacuum attachment or brush on the air intake and outlet grilles. Do not splash or spray water onto the appliance, and do not use bleach or abrasive cleaners on its case, as the cited Midea manual cautions.
- Reassemble and operate as directed. Make sure cleaned parts are dry and properly installed before using the unit, following the instructions for your model.
Check your model before cleaning a pump filter
Not every Midea dehumidifier has a pump filter. If yours does, consult its manual before removing or cleaning it. The Midea Cube BT guide for model MAD50PE1QWT-S permits rinsing that model’s pump filter or cleaning it with a soft brush or sponge. Those instructions should not be assumed to apply to other models.
The same Cube guide gives a separate long-term storage procedure: let the system dry naturally for one full day, clean the unit, bucket, and filter, then store it upright in a dry, well-ventilated area. That one-day direction is for storage, not a general waiting period after every routine cleaning.
Why the smell may remain
A dirty bucket is one possible maintenance-related source of musty odor, but Midea’s cited materials do not identify a universal cause, confirm that a particular filter or internal component is contaminated, or prescribe a universal chemical treatment. A smell that remains after accessible parts are clean and dry needs model-specific follow-up—not an assumption that an internal part is faulty.

Find instructions and support for the exact unit
Check the model number on the appliance and use it to locate the matching manual. Features and cleaning directions vary: some models have a pump filter, while filter-washing instructions or indicators may differ. For example, Midea Canada describes a washable filter and clean-filter indicator on its MADA35R5AWT product page; that does not establish the same features for every Midea unit.
If the odor persists after the user-accessible parts have been cleaned and dried, use the model’s official support page to look for its manual, parts, repair options, or customer support. Midea US provides support listings for the MAD50P1AWS1 and MAD35C1AWS1. Use the listing that matches your model; these pages are not universal service instructions.
