To give a YouTube replay a reasonable chance of being saved, end each stream session before it reaches 12 hours, check that its replay appears in YouTube Studio, and then start a new session. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; a stream that runs longer may not be captured at all. This is not a guarantee, so keep a separate local recording as a backup.
What to do if your 24/7 stream is live now
- End the encoder session. Stop sending content from the encoder. If it is a scheduled encoder stream, YouTube’s instructions also call for clicking End Stream in Live Control Room. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions.
- Look for the replay. In YouTube Studio, go to Content > Live and check the Live Replay area for the ended stream. YouTube’s webcam guidance describes this Studio location: Manage your live stream.
- Check its visibility. Open the replay’s details and confirm the Visibility setting is appropriate for the intended audience. YouTube says archive privacy can be changed from the content page.
- If there is no replay, do not rely on DVR settings to create one. YouTube does not document a recovery method for a missing replay after an overlong session. Its archive guidance warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all: Archive live streams.
Why a 24/7 broadcast can lose its replay
YouTube’s archive guidance says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. The 12-hour mark is not a guaranteed safe run time: the documented guidance describes archiving streams under that duration and cautions about longer streams, rather than promising that every shorter stream will be saved.
That caveat matters for a continuous 24/7 broadcast: a single session is much longer than YouTube’s stated archive threshold. Stopping an already-overlong session does not guarantee a replay will appear afterward, and the official guidance does not describe a way to recover one if it is missing.
How to run a 24/7 broadcast in replay-friendly sessions
End and restart before the threshold
Break the broadcast into separate sessions and end each one before it reaches 12 hours; then start a fresh session. This gives each session a reasonable chance of being archived, but it is not a promise that YouTube will save every replay. For an encoder stream, stop its content feed; for a scheduled encoder stream, use End Stream in Live Control Room as YouTube directs.

Keep a separate local copy
YouTube recommends recording a local archive as a backup. For long recordings, check that recording is active and that the destination has enough capacity. A local file is an independent backup; it does not force YouTube to create a replay.
Verify every archive before relying on it
After ending a session, check YouTube Studio > Content > Live for the replay, then confirm its visibility. Do not treat an upload or an active broadcast as proof that an archive is available to viewers.

DVR and the replay are different
DVR controls whether viewers can pause and rewind while the broadcast is live. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams over 12 hours. Turning DVR off does not prevent a recording of the entire stream from being available after the stream ends, if an archive is created. DVR is therefore a live-viewing feature, not an archive guarantee. See YouTube’s DVR settings guidance.
