You can keep up with important events without spending the day in an anxious headline loop. The most reliable approach is to make news intake finite: decide what you need to know, choose a few trustworthy sources, check them at scheduled times, and stop when you understand the material update. Replace infinite social feeds with an article, newsletter, podcast, or broadcast that has a natural endpoint. Mute nonessential alerts and add app timers or stronger access barriers if you keep reopening the feed.
The goal is not to avoid news. It is to stay informed while remaining able to disengage, sleep, concentrate, and carry on with ordinary activities.
What doomscrolling is—and why it is hard to stop
Doomscrolling means consuming upsetting online news or posts for a prolonged period even when the activity is no longer useful or feels difficult to control. APA Monitor reporting says the term emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic to describe excessive consumption of pandemic-related media. The Mental Health Foundation says the habit can leave people more anxious, sad, or overwhelmed, sometimes before they realize a pattern has formed.
News is designed to compete for attention. A social feed can present one alarming item after another, with no final page and no clear signal that you have learned enough. Each swipe offers the possibility of a significant update, so checking again can feel like a sensible precaution rather than a habit. Algorithms also mix reporting, commentary, graphic footage, rumors, and personal reactions in one stream, making it difficult to judge whether the next item will add information or merely intensify emotion.

APA Monitor has reported research linking greater exposure to the latest headlines with poorer mental-health outcomes; in the cited work, television and social-media exposure were more strongly associated with distress than some other formats. That finding does not establish that every news session is harmful. The useful test is whether your chosen format and frequency leave you informed and able to stop, or keyed up and compelled to continue.
The CDC advises: “Take breaks from news and social media. It is good to be informed, but constant information about negative events can be upsetting.” The CDC also notes that long-term stress can worsen health problems and affect concentration, decision-making, sleep, mood, and existing conditions.
Start by defining the information job
Open-ended browsing is the enemy of a bounded routine. Before you open an app or website, state the job in one sentence. A specific question gives the session a finish line.
- Local safety: “Are there any official evacuation, transit, weather, or public-health instructions for my area?”
- A developing event: “What has been confirmed since my last check, and what remains unverified?”
- Work or study: “Which policy, market, technology, or industry change affects a decision I must make?”
- Civic awareness: “What are the significant events I should understand this week?”
- Personal connection: “Is there information I need to share with a particular person or group?”
Write the question in a notes app or on paper. If you cannot say what you are looking for, postpone the check until you can define it. “See what is happening” is effectively an invitation to an endless feed; “check whether the school closure is confirmed” is a finite task.
Choose sources and formats that make stopping easier
Evaluate a news option on four axes: reliability and transparency, whether the format ends, emotional intensity, and how much control you have over timing, alerts, and access. CDC risk-communication guidance says the person or organization delivering a message can affect trust and uptake, and that audience, health literacy, and access matter. Look for named reporting, a clear corrections policy, identifiable ownership or editorial standards, links to primary documents when appropriate, and a distinction between verified facts and analysis.
| Format | Stopping point | Emotional control | Useful for | Typical risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Newsletter | Usually ends after a defined issue | You choose when to open it; images and links vary | A daily or weekly overview | Several newsletters can recreate an inbox-sized feed |
| Single article | Ends when the article ends | Usually easier to avoid autoplay and unrelated items | Understanding one event or decision | Related-story links can restart browsing |
| Podcast or briefing episode | Episode length provides a natural boundary | Audio may reduce visual exposure, but tone still matters | Commuting or a planned update | Autoplay can continue into another episode |
| Finite radio or television segment | Program schedule supplies an endpoint | Graphic footage and urgent presentation can raise intensity | Time-sensitive local or national updates | Continuous channels remove the endpoint |
| Social-media feed | No reliable endpoint | Low control over ranking, replies, images, and video | Finding eyewitness material or links when you have a specific search goal | Infinite scrolling, repetition, speculation, and graphic content |
Prefer one or two complementary sources rather than collecting every outlet. For example, a local official channel can cover immediate instructions while a national publication provides context. More sources are not automatically more knowledge; after several outlets repeat the same confirmed facts, additional checking often adds anxiety rather than clarity.

Set a rule for graphic material before you begin. Roxane Cohen Silver, a psychologist at the University of California, Irvine, said, “I think that one can stay informed without immersing oneself in graphic images.” Reading a factual account or listening to a briefing can answer the information question without repeatedly viewing distressing photographs or video. Disable autoplay where possible and avoid accounts that post graphic material without warning.

Build a bounded news routine
The following routine turns news from an ambient stream into a deliberate appointment. Adjust the windows to your responsibilities; the important feature is that each session has a defined beginning and end.
1. Pick one or two check-in windows
Choose times that do not sit immediately before sleep, an important meeting, or a task requiring sustained concentration. Many people begin with one short morning or midday check and add a second only when their information job requires it. Put the windows on your calendar so a headline does not decide when you pay attention.
A timer should mark the end of the session, not merely remind you that you have been browsing. Start it before opening the source. If you miss a window, do not compensate by spending twice as long later; wait for the next scheduled check unless the event is genuinely time-sensitive.
2. Prepare the source list before opening anything
Keep a small, named list of outlets or official channels that meet your reliability criteria. Open them directly from a bookmark or saved link instead of entering a general social feed. If you need to search, search for the specific information job—such as an agency name and an incident—rather than a broad emotional phrase.

3. Use a format with an endpoint
Select one article, one newsletter issue, one podcast episode, or one scheduled broadcast segment. AP quoted UCLA psychologist Dana Rose Garfin recommending more enjoyable, bounded formats such as an informative article, podcast, or news segment instead of “letting the algorithm suck you in for eternity in a mindless fashion.” Turn off autoplay and skip “related” recommendations once the selected item is complete.
4. Read for the update, not for emotional completion
While reading or listening, identify four things: what happened, what is confirmed, what is still uncertain, and whether you need to act. You do not need to feel completely reassured before stopping; major events often remain unresolved. If the next item repeats the same facts, adds speculation, or supplies only a more graphic version, it is not part of the information job.
5. Apply a clear stop rule
End the session when you can answer the four questions above or when the timer rings, whichever comes first. A repeated urge to refresh the same headlines is a stop signal, not evidence that you missed something. Save a link for later only when it contains a specific detail you must verify; do not keep a stack of tabs as an excuse to continue browsing.

6. Replace the checking loop immediately
Have a next activity ready before the timer ends: walk outside, make a drink, speak with someone, return to a hands-on task, stretch, practice a breathing exercise, or do a hobby that uses your attention. AP’s experts recommend these kinds of shifts when news-related worry becomes obsessive. The replacement activity gives your brain a concrete alternative to reopening the feed.
7. Review the routine once a week
Ask whether the routine answered your information jobs, whether you exceeded the timer, and which source or format made stopping difficult. Keep what worked, remove sources that mainly repeat or inflame, and change the window if it consistently collides with sleep or work. A routine is successful when it preserves useful awareness without occupying every spare moment.
Reduce alerts and add device friction
Notifications turn an intentional check into a series of unplanned interruptions. Mute breaking-news alerts that are not necessary for your safety or job. Keep emergency notifications that you genuinely rely on, but separate them from general headlines, social reactions, and promotional messages.

Android: set an app or website timer
Android’s official Digital Wellbeing documentation provides a usage dashboard, app timers, and an app-limit PIN. The labels can vary slightly by device and Android version, but the usual path is:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Open Settings.
- Choose Digital Wellbeing & parental controls.
- Open the usage dashboard and select the news or social app you want to limit.
- Choose Set timer or the app-timer control, select the daily allowance, and save it.
- If another person is helping you keep the boundary, configure the available app-limit PIN so changing the limit is less automatic.
You can also set a timer for a news website when your device offers website controls. Treat the timer as a prompt to stop, not as a guarantee. AP notes that built-in iPhone and Android limits can be bypassed. If you routinely override them, move the app off the home screen, sign out, remove saved passwords, or use a stronger friction tool. Apps such as Jomo, Brick, and Blok are examples of tools designed to add friction; check their current behavior and compatibility before relying on one.
Use Focus mode for protected periods
Schedule your phone’s Focus or notification-silencing mode during sleep, meals, concentrated work, and the period immediately after a news check. Allow calls or alerts from people and services you consider essential. The purpose is not to make the phone unreachable; it is to prevent a headline from reopening the session you deliberately ended.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle breaking news without opening an endless feed
When an event may affect your immediate safety, switch from general news to the responsible official source for your location or situation. Look for direct instructions, affected areas, timing, and the next update time. Check once, follow the instruction, and return at the stated update point rather than monitoring every commentary stream.
For a developing event that is important but not immediately dangerous, keep the same bounded routine: choose a source with named reporting, note the last confirmed update, and schedule the next check. Label unconfirmed claims as unconfirmed. Reposting a rumor to verify it can expose you to more distress while adding no reliable information.

How much news is a healthy amount?
There is no evidence-based universal number of minutes that is safe for every person. The available guidance supports breaks, bounded sessions, less graphic exposure, deliberate source selection, and device friction rather than a single quota. A useful amount is the smallest routine that reliably answers your information jobs while leaving your sleep, concentration, mood, relationships, and responsibilities intact.
Track outcomes instead of chasing a perfect number. If a 15-minute check leaves you calm and able to resume your day, it may be serving you better than several hours of fragmented checking. If a seemingly short session triggers repeated refreshing, move to a more finite format, reduce frequency, or add stronger access barriers.
Troubleshoot a routine that keeps expanding
“I stop the timer and immediately reopen the app.”
Make the boundary harder to negotiate: remove the app from your home screen, sign out, ask someone you trust to hold the app-limit PIN, or use a friction tool. Replace the app with a saved article or finite newsletter so you still have a defined way to get the update.

“Every source feels biased or incomplete.”
Use two complementary sources with different roles, such as an official channel for instructions and a publication with transparent reporting for context. Stop when both answer the information job; do not attempt to eliminate all uncertainty by collecting unlimited commentary.
“Images and videos keep replaying in my head.”
Switch to text or audio, mute accounts that post graphic material, and avoid replaying footage to look for additional details. Take the planned offline activity immediately after the check. If distress persists, affects sleep, or interferes with normal functioning, seek professional support.
“I feel irresponsible when I take a break.”
Write down the next scheduled check and any specific action you have already taken. A planned pause is not denial; it is the CDC-recommended break that protects your ability to concentrate and make decisions. Emergency instructions are an exception, but general monitoring can wait for the next window.
An optional structured reset
How to Break Up with Your Phone, Revised Edition by Catherine Price is described by Penguin Random House as a hands-on 30-day digital-detox guide focused on mental health and screen-life balance. It is aimed in part at readers seeking refuge from an exhausting news cycle or concerned about social-media effects. Treat it as an optional workbook for changing phone habits, not as a substitute for medical or psychological treatment.

News-related worry deserves more support when it seriously disrupts sleep, work or school, relationships, appetite, concentration, or your sense of safety. A qualified clinician can help with persistent anxiety or compulsive checking. If you may harm yourself or someone else, or cannot stay safe, contact local emergency services or a local crisis resource immediately.
Staying informed does not require permanent exposure. Define the question, use a trustworthy finite source, schedule the check, stop at the information boundary, and make the next activity easier than reopening the feed. That combination preserves awareness while making disengagement a normal part of the routine.
