You can start World of Warcraft’s current free trial by creating or using a Battle.net account, installing the Battle.net desktop app for Windows or Mac, selecting the standard World of Warcraft entry (not a Classic-only version), and clicking Install. The trial includes playable World of Warcraft content through level 20, including quests and dungeons available to a level-20 character. It does not include WoW Classic, and progression beyond level 20 requires a subscription or non-recurring game time.
What the World of Warcraft free trial includes
Blizzard’s current Free Trial FAQ sets the limit at level 20. You can create a character, complete the opening content, quest, and run any dungeon available to a level-20 character without an active subscription or non-recurring game time. Blizzard states: “The Free Trial includes all playable content in World of Warcraft through level 20. Any dungeons or quests able to be completed by a level 20 character are available to Free Trial players.”
New accounts begin in Exile’s Reach. After that introductory adventure, Blizzard directs new accounts to Dragonflight content. The trial is therefore a playable introduction to the modern version of World of Warcraft rather than a time-limited demo that expires after a few hours.

When a character reaches level 20, you cannot continue into the paid-only progression path until the account has subscription time or non-recurring game time. Blizzard also restricts several social and end-game features at the trial level, including guilds, unrestricted in-game chat, and the Auction House.

What you need before installing
- A Battle.net account. New players can create one during the sign-up process; existing players can use an account that has no active subscription or non-recurring game time.
- A Windows or Mac computer capable of running the Battle.net desktop app.
- The Battle.net desktop app, which is where you select World of Warcraft, choose its version, install the game, and launch it.
- A realm choice. If friends already play, ask which realm they use before creating your character so you can play together on the same realm.
You do not need an active subscription or non-recurring game time to play levels 1–20. Blizzard says an existing account with neither of those active services reverts to Free Trial status, so you do not have to make a brand-new account merely because an older subscription has ended.
Create or access your Battle.net account
- Open Blizzard’s Battle.net account page and select Log in or sign up.
- Enter an email address or phone number. If you already have a Battle.net account, sign in instead of creating another one.
- Complete the account-creation prompts if you are new. Keep track of which account you use, because the Battle.net app may show more than one World of Warcraft account later.
- Finish signing in. The Battle.net desktop app uses this account to identify your game license and trial status.
Blizzard’s New Players Starter Guide, published February 25, 2026, summarizes the first requirement as: “Download the Battle.net desktop app for Windows or Mac and create your account.” The account itself is separate from a paid subscription: an account can exist in Free Trial status when it has no active subscription or non-recurring game time.
Install the Battle.net desktop app and select the correct game
- Download and install the Battle.net desktop app for Windows or Mac.
- Open the app and sign in with the Battle.net account you want to use.
- From the app’s game menu, select World of Warcraft.
- Open the Version menu. Select the standard World of Warcraft entry.
- Do not select a Classic-only entry if your goal is the free trial. Blizzard’s current FAQ says, “There is no Free Trial available for WoW Classic currently.”
- If the app lists multiple World of Warcraft accounts, select the active account you intend to play. An account with an active subscription or non-recurring game time will not behave like an unrestricted level-20 trial account.
- Click Install and allow the installation to finish.
- When the button changes to Play, click it and choose a realm.
Those labels and steps match Blizzard’s official starter sequence: choose World of Warcraft in the Battle.net app, select World of Warcraft under Version, click Install, and then click Play after installation completes.
Choose a realm before creating your character
A realm is the World of Warcraft game world in which your character plays. The first time you launch the game, choose one from the realm list. If you want to join friends, ask for their exact realm name first. Creating a character on a different realm can prevent you from playing together even though you are both using the same game version and Battle.net service.

If you are trying the game alone, select a realm and continue through character creation. The free trial rules apply to the character regardless of whether you choose a realm before or after deciding to upgrade. The important practical decision is to coordinate with friends before investing time in a character you want to play with them.
What you can do from levels 1 through 20
Complete the opening adventure
New accounts start in Exile’s Reach, an introductory area designed to teach the basic World of Warcraft flow: accepting quests, traveling through an area, fighting enemies, and developing a character. After Exile’s Reach, Blizzard directs new accounts to Dragonflight content. The trial lets you experience that route without first buying an expansion or adding game time.
Quest through available content
Any quest that a level-20 character can complete is included. The rule is based on the character’s level, not on a fixed number of hours or a short promotional period. You can take time to learn the interface, compare classes, and explore the available areas while staying within the free level range.
Run eligible dungeons
Dungeons available to a level-20 character are part of the trial. Higher-level dungeons and raids are among the paid progression features that require subscription or game time. The trial therefore supports an introductory group experience but is not a route to the full end-game dungeon and raid system.

What stops at level 20
Level 20 is the current Free Trial cap identified by Blizzard. Once a character reaches it, you must add a subscription or non-recurring game time to unlock content beyond that level. The following restrictions are expected rather than installation errors:
- Further level progression: the trial character cannot continue into paid-only levels.
- Higher-level dungeons and raids: activities that require a character above level 20 remain unavailable until the account is upgraded.
- Guilds: Blizzard lists guild access among the social features unlocked by subscription or game time, so a trial account cannot use guild membership as an unrestricted player.
- Unrestricted in-game chat: trial communication is limited compared with a paid account.
- Auction House: the Auction House is not available as an unrestricted feature during the trial.
These limits do not mean the installation failed. They indicate that the account is still in Free Trial status. You can continue using the character within the trial’s allowed content or upgrade the account when you want to progress.

The table separates two decisions that are often confused: adding subscription or game time unlocks progression beyond level 20, while buying an expansion is a separate requirement for the latest expansion’s content. Subscription pricing and available game-time options vary by region, so use your regional Battle.net Shop for the current choices rather than relying on a universal price.
Can an existing Battle.net account use the trial?
Yes. Blizzard says existing Battle.net accounts can qualify when they have no active subscription and no non-recurring game time. In that situation, the account status reverts to Free Trial. You can sign in with the old account, install the standard World of Warcraft entry, and use the level-20 trial without creating a second account.

If the app shows more than one World of Warcraft account, check which one is active before pressing Play. Selecting an account with current game time will take you into that account’s paid status; selecting an account without active time is the path Blizzard describes for Free Trial access.
Can you try WoW Classic for free?
No. Blizzard’s current Free Trial FAQ states: “There is no Free Trial available for WoW Classic currently.” Classic requires an active subscription or non-recurring game time. If you choose a Classic-only entry in the Battle.net app and cannot find a trial option, that is the expected result, not a missing installation step.
For the free level-20 experience, return to the game selector, choose the standard World of Warcraft entry under Version, and install that version instead.

The Battle.net app opens, but World of Warcraft is not selected
Use the app’s game menu and select World of Warcraft. The installation controls are shown for the selected game. Signing in alone does not automatically start the World of Warcraft installer.

You selected Classic and cannot find a free-trial option
Switch the Version menu to the standard World of Warcraft entry. Blizzard does not currently offer a WoW Classic Free Trial.
The app shows Play instead of Install
The game may already be installed. Click Play to launch it. If the account has active subscription or non-recurring game time, it will use that paid status rather than Free Trial status.
You cannot progress after reaching level 20
That is the current trial cap. To continue into higher levels, dungeons, raids, guilds, unrestricted chat, and Auction House access, add a subscription or non-recurring game time.

You cannot join friends
Confirm that you chose the same realm as your friends. Ask for the realm name before creating another character; changing the Battle.net account does not automatically put characters on the same realm.
The latest expansion is unavailable after upgrading
Blizzard’s current FAQ identifies Midnight as the latest expansion. It requires both a purchase through the Battle.net Shop and an active subscription or non-recurring game time. Having only the free trial, or only one of those two requirements, does not provide Midnight access.
What to do after the trial
Use the level-20 trial to decide whether the standard World of Warcraft experience suits you, whether your preferred class feels right, and which realm you want. When you are ready to continue, choose a subscription or non-recurring game-time option in your regional Battle.net Shop. That upgrade removes the level-20 progression stop and unlocks the paid social and end-game features Blizzard lists.
If friends already play, ask them about their realm before upgrading or creating another character. Blizzard also identifies Recruit a Friend as an option for players whose friends are already active, but eligibility and rewards can change, so check the current terms in Battle.net before relying on it.
