Teams switch sides after 12 rounds in the basic match flow. From there, watch which routes teams control, what their Agents can do, and how the map shapes their options.
How to follow a VALORANT round
Each round centers on the Spike objective. Attackers need to plant and detonate the Spike; defenders aim to prevent the plant or defuse the Spike if it is planted. The sides switch after 12 rounds in the basic flow described in Riot’s Beginner’s Guide.

Before a round, players have a buy period for weapons and abilities. That makes the economy part of the story: a team may conserve resources in one round so it can buy more heavily later. While watching, ask three questions: which team has the player advantage, which routes are under control, and what abilities remain for an attack or retake? They are useful prompts, not rules that dictate one correct tactic.
What the Agent roles tell you
Riot groups Agents into four broad roles: Duelist, Controller, Initiator, and Sentinel. These labels offer a first clue about a team’s composition, but they do not tell you exactly what a player will do in a given round. The chosen Agent, map, team plan, and live situation all matter.

#1 Best Overall
Riot gives Controllers as an example: they can smoke sightlines to help a team enter a site. Its guide says teams can benefit from a more diverse Agent pool, while making clear that selecting every role is not mandatory. Treat roles as orientation rather than a required checklist or a fixed script for players.
Why maps change what you watch for
Map layout affects routes, sightlines, and the strategies available to each team. Riot’s guide says learning a map helps players anticipate where opponents might come from and which angles to watch. As a viewer, look for routes connecting the sites, contested middle areas, chokepoints, and sightlines that abilities block or expose.
Riot’s Beginner’s Guide, published August 2, 2024, counted 11 maps in VALORANT at that time. That historical total is not a current professional map-pool count. The current competitive pool is not established here, so use current event materials rather than the 2024 figure to identify maps in a specific tournament.
Where the 2026 VCT fits
The 2026 VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) is tier-one competition across four territories: Americas, EMEA, Pacific, and China. Riot’s 2026 season handbook describes a four-region, 48-team tour with regional and international events culminating in Champions Shanghai.
Rank #2
A regional league is a natural place to learn teams and local rivalries. Masters and Champions bring teams from different territories together, giving you cross-region matchups. Stages and qualification rules differ by event, so consult the handbook for the specific competition you plan to follow.
Riot’s homepage, captured October 3, 2026, lists Champions Shanghai for September 24–October 18, 2026, and promotes Drops for watching live matches. Check the official VALORANT homepage for current details. The date window and reward promotion can change; the available information here does not establish broadcast platforms, languages, regional eligibility, or the precise reward conditions.

Riot announced on April 8, 2026 that it plans to move the VCT to an all-tournament model in 2027, describing more than 20 tournaments a year and visits to more than 16 cities. Those are plans for the future format, not a description of the 2026 season. Riot said further details would follow in its 2027 VCT announcement.
