You can start VTubing with a computer, an avatar, tracking software, a microphone, and OBS. The first decision is the avatar format: a 2D Live2D model works with VTube Studio, while a 3D VRM or VRoid model needs a VRM-compatible tracker. A webcam is optional if you use smartphone tracking, and you can begin with a free or low-cost model before commissioning custom art.

This guide takes you from choosing an avatar through tracking, audio, OBS scenes, licensing, performance checks, and a private test stream.

What you need to start VTubing

A beginner setup has five parts. You do not need every premium option on day one.

  • Avatar: A Live2D model (2D) or VRM model (3D).
  • Tracking application: VTube Studio for Live2D Cubism models, or another application that supports VRM for a 3D model.
  • Camera tracking: A USB webcam or a compatible smartphone camera.
  • Audio: A microphone for your voice; it is also required for audio-based lip sync.
  • Broadcast software: OBS Studio to combine the avatar, game or display, alerts, text, and audio into a stream.

Think of the setup as a pipeline: the camera supplies face or body movement, the tracker turns that movement into model parameters, and OBS composites the resulting avatar with your other sources before sending the stream.

Choose 2D Live2D or 3D VRM first

Avatar format determines which tracking software you can use. This choice is more important than buying a camera because the wrong software-model combination will not work.

2D Live2D

A Live2D model is made from illustrated parts that are rigged to deform when you move. It usually gives a polished illustrated look with expressive eyes, mouth shapes, hair physics, and carefully designed toggles. You obtain a layered illustration and rig, commission both from an artist, or use a licensed ready-made model.

VTube Studio is designed for Live2D Cubism models. Its official listing states: “VTube Studio ONLY supports Live2D Cubism models, other formats like VRoid are not supported.” See the VTube Studio listing for the supported format and platform details.

3D VRM or VRoid

A VRM model is a three-dimensional avatar that can be rotated and animated with body, hand, and face tracking when the chosen application supports those features. VRoid Studio is one way to create a model, with adjustable hairstyles, clothing, facial features, and textures. A VRoid export is a VRM file, so it needs a VRM-compatible tracker rather than VTube Studio.

3D is useful when you want room-scale movement, full-body scenes, or a camera angle that changes around the character. It can require more setup for bones, expressions, lighting, and physics than a simple 2D debut.

2D versus 3D at a glance

Factor 2D Live2D 3D VRM/VRoid
Model style Illustrated character built from layered art and deformations Volumetric character with mesh, bones, materials, and expressions
Creation effort Requires prepared layered art plus rigging, unless you use a ready-made model Can be created in a character editor; advanced clothing, hair, and physics add work
Tracking software VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism models Use a tracker that explicitly supports VRM; VTube Studio does not support VRoid/VRM
Expression and body motion Excellent face and upper-body expression; range depends on the rig Can support head, body, hands, and full-body motion when the tracker and hardware provide it
Licensing Follow the model artist’s commercial, streaming, and redistribution terms Follow VRoid’s rules plus every third-party asset’s license

For a talking-head channel with a simple desk setup, either format works. Pick the format whose creation and tracking workflow you are prepared to maintain, not the one that looks most impressive in screenshots.

Get an avatar without creating licensing problems

Your first avatar can be free, inexpensive, commissioned, or temporary. The price does not determine whether you can stream with it; the license does.

Free and low-cost routes

  • Create a VRoid model and export it as VRM, then use a compatible 3D tracker.
  • Use a model or asset explicitly marked for streaming or commercial use.
  • Commission an artist for a model and rig, with written permission covering livestreams, clips, thumbnails, and monetization if you need those rights.
  • Use a simple placeholder while you learn OBS and your streaming routine.

VRoid Studio’s guidelines say that model data exported from VRoid Studio may be used for live streaming or for-profit appearances in shows when the applicable conditions are met. The same guidance covers eligible provided meshes, textures, and presets when no special clause says otherwise. It does not override a separate creator’s terms: inspect every downloaded hairstyle, texture, clothing item, background, logo, voice asset, and commissioned file.

Make a license checklist

  • Can the model be used in livestreams and recorded videos?
  • Is monetization, sponsorship, or membership revenue allowed?
  • May you edit the model, change its colors, or add accessories?
  • Are attribution, credit placement, or usage notices required?
  • Can you use the model in thumbnails, promotional images, and short clips?
  • Are redistribution, resale, model extraction, or use by another performer prohibited?

Save the license text and purchase receipt with the model files. If a clause is unclear, ask the creator before you publish rather than assuming a free download permits commercial use.

Pick a tracking method: webcam or smartphone

Face tracking turns your expressions into avatar movement. VTube Studio supports webcam tracking on Windows and Mac and also offers smartphone-camera tracking through its mobile app. A webcam is not mandatory when you already have a compatible phone.

USB webcam

A webcam is the simplest universal path. Mount it near eye level, keep your face evenly lit, and select it in the tracking application. It stays attached to the computer, so there is no phone battery, wireless connection, or second-device placement to manage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Smartphone camera

A phone can provide high-quality face tracking, particularly when its front camera and supported tracking app are compatible. Place it securely, keep the lens clear, and connect it according to the tracker’s instructions. Keep the phone charged and disable notifications that could appear during a stream.

VTube Studio’s FAQ explains that phone tracking sends calculated tracking parameters to the PC rather than raw face video. That reduces what is transmitted, but you should still review camera-preview, permissions, and privacy settings before going live.

Webcam versus phone

Factor USB webcam Smartphone camera
Existing hardware Requires a camera unless your computer has one built in Uses a compatible phone you already own
Setup complexity Plug in, select the camera, and position it Install the mobile component, pair it, mount the phone, and manage battery and connection
Latency Usually predictable over a direct USB connection; affected by camera and tracker settings Depends on the phone, connection method, wireless conditions, and tracker
Privacy Video remains on the computer unless another application sends it elsewhere Review phone permissions, previews, and what data the tracker transmits
Cost Additional purchase if you do not have a camera No new camera purchase if your existing phone is compatible

Start with whichever device you already have that produces a stable, well-lit face image. Better lighting often improves tracking more than replacing a functioning camera.

Install and configure the avatar tracker

For a Live2D model in VTube Studio

  1. Install VTube Studio from its official listing or the supported version for your operating system.
  2. Import or place your Live2D Cubism model where the application can detect it, then select the model from the model browser.
  3. Open the tracking settings and choose your USB webcam, or pair the mobile app if you are using a phone.
  4. Adjust camera framing so your face is centered and visible from forehead to chin. Keep your head at the distance you expect to use while streaming.
  5. Calibrate neutral expression, eye openness, mouth movement, and head angle. Make small adjustments while looking at the preview rather than moving dramatically.
  6. Enable hotkeys or toggles for expressions, hand gestures, outfit changes, or other model features if the model includes them.

Ordinary face tracking does not require a microphone. VTube Studio’s audio-based lip sync is a separate feature and does require microphone input.

For a VRM or VRoid model

  1. Export the model as VRM from the creation application, retaining a backup of the original project.
  2. Install a tracker that explicitly lists VRM support and import the VRM file.
  3. Select your webcam or phone as the tracking source and map the available face, pose, or hand inputs.
  4. Check eye blinking, mouth shapes, hair and clothing physics, and any safety or performance options.
  5. Set a neutral pose and save a profile so you can restore the same calibration after updates.

Do not try to load a VRM file into VTube Studio; its stated format limitation means the model will not be supported there.

Set up your microphone and audio

Viewers tolerate a simple avatar more readily than unintelligible speech. Use a microphone positioned close enough for a strong signal, keep it away from keyboard noise, and monitor for clipping.

Basic audio path

  1. Connect the microphone before opening OBS so the operating system exposes it consistently.
  2. In the operating system’s sound settings, select it as the input device and set a moderate level.
  3. In OBS, add an Audio Input Capture source for the microphone rather than relying on an unknown default device.
  4. Speak at your normal volume and watch the mixer meter. Peaks should remain below the clipping area.
  5. Use the mixer’s filters only after confirming the raw signal: a noise suppression filter can reduce steady fan noise, a compressor can narrow large volume differences, and a limiter can prevent sudden clipping.

Use headphones when possible to prevent game audio from feeding back into the microphone. Desktop audio and microphone audio are separate OBS sources, so you can mute or balance them independently.

Build the stream in OBS

OBS is the scene compositor. It captures the tracker window or transparency output, combines it with a game or display, adds text and alerts, mixes audio, and sends the final program to your streaming service.

Create a practical scene set

  1. Open OBS and run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. Let it estimate settings from your hardware and connection, then treat the result as a starting point.
  2. Create a scene named Starting Soon with a background, schedule text, and microphone if you want to talk before the main content.
  3. Create a Main scene. Add the avatar window or capture source first, then add the game or display capture, background, chat or alert overlays, and text.
  4. Create a Be Right Back scene that hides the game and shows a clear message. Keep the microphone choice intentional: mute it if you do not want private conversation heard.
  5. Create an Ending scene with your sign-off and next-stream information.
  6. Arrange source order carefully. In OBS, sources higher in the list appear above sources lower in the list, so a full-screen capture placed above the avatar can hide it.
  7. Crop and scale the avatar window with the transform controls. Lock sources after positioning to prevent accidental movement.
  8. Add the microphone and desktop audio in the Audio Mixer, then verify that only the devices you intend to broadcast are active.

If your tracker does not provide transparent output, place its window over a chroma-color background and use OBS’s color-key filter. A transparent capture is usually cleaner, but the correct method depends on the tracker.

Computer requirements and performance trade-offs

Minimum specifications are compatibility floors, not promises of smooth streaming. The tracker, model complexity, game, OBS encoder, browser sources, and output resolution all compete for CPU, GPU, memory, and network capacity.

Published software minimums

Software Published requirement What it means
VTube Studio for Windows 4 GB RAM and 2 GB dedicated VRAM listed by DenchiSoft Enough to meet the listed software minimum; complex models and OBS may require more
OBS Studio on Windows DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU in the basic system requirements Allows the application to run; it is not a guarantee of a chosen resolution, frame rate, or encoder performance

See OBS system requirements for the current baseline. OBS also publishes its official download and documentation hub at obsproject.com.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What to upgrade first

  • Insufficient GPU headroom: Reduce game quality, lower the avatar render resolution, simplify browser overlays, or choose a hardware encoder when your GPU supports one.
  • CPU overload: Lower output FPS or resolution, close unneeded applications, reduce model physics, and avoid running several animated browser sources.
  • Memory pressure: Close large editors and browser tabs, then consider more RAM if the system remains near its limit.
  • Network instability: Test a wired connection where practical and lower the stream bitrate or output quality until the connection is stable.

Start with 720p and a modest frame rate if you are unsure. Increase quality only after a private test shows stable rendering and encoding.

Test privately before your debut

Do not discover a hidden microphone, license, or performance problem in front of your first audience. OBS explicitly encourages running a test for a few minutes to check for issues; follow its quick-start testing guidance.

  1. Record locally for five to ten minutes while speaking, switching scenes, moving your head, and opening the game or application you plan to show.
  2. Watch the recording with headphones. Check speech clarity, game volume, lip sync, avatar cropping, scene transitions, and accidental desktop notifications.
  3. Open OBS’s statistics view during the test. Look for dropped frames, rendering lag, and encoding overload rather than judging only the preview.
  4. Repeat the test with your most demanding game or model. A simple idle scene can hide the load that occurs during gameplay.
  5. Make one change at a time—resolution, FPS, encoder, source, or model physics—so you know which change solved or caused a problem.

Common first-stream problems and fixes

The model is invisible

  • Confirm that the file format matches the tracker: Live2D Cubism for VTube Studio, VRM for a compatible 3D tracker.
  • Check whether the avatar window is behind another OBS source or cropped outside the canvas.
  • Verify that the model is loaded and that the capture source points to the correct application window.

The face barely moves or jitters

  • Move the camera to eye level and add soft, even light facing you.
  • Remove backlighting and keep your face within the tracker’s framing guide.
  • Recalibrate neutral expression and reduce sensitivity if small movements become exaggerated.
  • Close other applications using the camera; many systems allow only one camera client at a time.

Lip sync is not responding

  • Check that the microphone is selected in the tracker if you enabled audio-based lip sync.
  • Confirm the operating system permission and input meter show a signal.
  • Remember that camera face tracking and audio lip sync are separate features; a working camera does not supply microphone audio.

The stream is choppy

  • Check OBS statistics to distinguish rendering lag, encoding overload, and dropped network frames.
  • Lower output resolution or FPS, simplify scenes, reduce game settings, or change the encoder according to the overload type.
  • Run another private recording after each adjustment.

Private information appears on screen

  • Use a dedicated streaming scene rather than capturing your entire desktop when a window capture is sufficient.
  • Disable phone notifications and close password managers, email, and unrelated chats before recording.
  • Review every browser source and alert widget for visible account names, URLs, or personal messages.

A sensible upgrade path

Upgrade the part that limits your current workflow, not the part that looks most impressive in a product list.

  1. First: Improve lighting and microphone placement. These changes benefit tracking and viewer experience immediately.
  2. Next: Replace an unreliable camera or microphone, or switch to a phone tracker if your existing phone provides better face data.
  3. Then: Commission a custom model or rig once you know your character design, expression needs, and streaming schedule.
  4. Later: Add a second monitor, stream deck, capture card, hand tracking, or full-body tracking only when a specific scene or format requires it.

A USB capture card is relevant when you need to bring console or another computer’s video into OBS. It is not required for a single-computer setup that uses game or display capture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Decision checklist before going live

  • Your model format and tracker are compatible.
  • The avatar license covers the way you plan to stream and monetize.
  • Your camera is stable, your face is lit, and tracking is calibrated.
  • Your microphone is selected, audible, and not clipping.
  • OBS scenes contain only the sources you intend to broadcast.
  • Game, desktop, and microphone levels are balanced.
  • Notifications and private windows are hidden.
  • A private recording or test stream has no dropped frames, encoding overload, or distracting glitches.

Once these checks pass, you are ready to stream with a simple setup and improve it based on actual problems you encounter. The essential principle remains the same: choose the avatar format first, match the tracker to it, let OBS assemble the show, and test the complete chain before inviting an audience.
