Yes. You can start a Steam game download from the Steam Mobile app or a web browser, and Steam will download the files to your home PC or Mac—not to your phone. The target computer must be running the Steam client and signed in to your Steam account.
What Steam Remote Downloads do
Remote Downloads let you send an install command to a computer that is already running Steam. Choose a game from your account’s Games list and select Install; the Steam client on the target computer handles the download. Your phone or browser acts as a remote control and can show installation status.
This is not a way to download a PC game onto a phone. It is also separate from Steam Link, which is a Remote Play app for streaming games.
What you need before starting
- A PC or Mac with the Steam client running and signed in to the same Steam account you will use remotely.
- A phone with Steam Mobile installed, or a web browser signed in to Steam.
- An internet connection for the remote device and the target computer.
Steam recommends leaving the application running on your own private, secured computer. Its Remote Downloads guidance says the feature can be enabled from a web browser or the Steam Mobile app when Steam is left running on a PC or Mac. Simply having the computer powered on is not enough if the Steam client is not running and signed in.

Start a download from Steam Mobile or a browser
- On the home PC or Mac, open Steam and sign in. Leave the Steam client running.
- On your phone, open Steam Mobile, or open Steam in a browser. Sign in to the same account used on the computer.
- Open your profile or activity area and go to the Games list.
- Select the game you want to install, then tap or click Install.
- Refresh or revisit the Games list to check the installation status. The game files download to the remote computer through its Steam client.
When you return to the computer, check the Steam client to confirm the download has finished before launching the game.
Browser control or Steam Mobile?

What changed in the Steam client update?
PC Gamer reported on April 29, 2026 that Valve’s April 28 Steam client update added multi-device download management. With the update, users can check or adjust a game download on another machine on the network. This is a related client capability; the basic remote installation flow still depends on the target computer running Steam and being signed in.

If the download does not start
- Confirm Steam is running on the target computer. Open the Steam client there and verify that it is signed in.
- Check the account. The phone or browser and target client must use the same Steam account.
- Check the Games list again. Refresh it and confirm you selected Install for the intended game.
- Check phone compatibility. Steam lists Android 7.0 and iOS 15.1 as the respective minimum OS versions for Steam Mobile.
- Distinguish remote downloads from streaming. Steam Link is for Remote Play streaming, not for sending a game download to the PC.
