Before starting a mower, identify whether it is battery-powered or gasoline-powered, read the manual for its exact make and model, and make the mowing area safe. Startup controls differ by machine; the examples below illustrate two Husqvarna walk-behind models and are not universal instructions. This guide covers walk-behind rotary mowers, not riding mowers or zero-turn machines.
Before you start: prepare yourself and the lawn
Check the machine’s instructions
Use the operator’s manual for the exact mower to confirm its starting sequence, required battery or fuel and oil preparation, control locations, and safety features. Do not guess if a control is unfamiliar or a guard is missing. If you cannot confirm that the mower is correctly prepared, stop and consult the manual or a qualified service provider.
Wear protection and clear the area
- Wear sturdy footwear and eye protection; hearing protection is also recommended by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.
- Walk over the lawn and remove rocks, sticks, wire, toys, and other objects that could be thrown by the blade.
- Keep children, pets, and bystanders away from the mowing area.
- Check that shields, guards, and other safety devices are fitted and working. Do not operate the mower with a safety device removed or damaged.
- Do not mow wet grass. On slopes, CPSC advises walking behind a rotary mower across the slope rather than up and down it. Do not proceed if you cannot keep secure footing.

How to start a battery walk-behind mower
Battery mowers can use different keys, interlocks, and handle controls, so follow your model’s manual rather than assuming a familiar-looking sequence applies. Husqvarna’s US support page gives this example for a battery mower in its product family:

- Note - Do not dump or turn the mower over to avoid oil entering the combustion chamber.
- Open the battery lid and insert a charged battery into its holder.
- Turn the safety key to position 1.
- Stand behind the mower, not in front of it or on uncut grass in the lowest position.
- Loosen the start inhibitor as described in the product instructions.
- Push the motor-brake handle toward the handlebar to start.
Those steps are specific to the sequence described by Husqvarna battery mower support; another brand or model may start differently. If the mower does not start, do not bypass an interlock. Check the manual’s troubleshooting instructions.
How to start a gasoline walk-behind mower
Gasoline models may have a choke, primer, fuel valve, or other controls; the location and order vary. Confirm the required fuel and oil and any first-use preparation in the model’s manual. For example, the 2017 manual for the Husqvarna 7021P says to hold its operator-presence control bar against the handle to start the engine and use the starter handle. It also warns that the blade turns whenever the engine runs. That manual says this particular mower shipped without oil or gasoline, which is why first setup must be checked for the individual machine rather than presumed.

Start a gasoline mower outdoors. Never refuel while it is running or hot. If it needs fuel, switch it off and let it cool before refueling; keep fuel away from ignition sources and follow the manual’s handling instructions. See the CPSC fueling guidance and CCOHS rotary mower guidance.
Use the Husqvarna 7021P manual only as a model-specific example, not as the starting procedure for every gasoline mower.

While mowing: keep control and stay clear of the blade
- Keep both hands on the controls as the manual directs, and keep hands and feet away from the deck and discharge opening.
- Never reach under the mower or approach the cutting area while the engine or motor is running.
- Watch for people, pets, obstacles, and changing footing. Stop if anyone enters the operating area or if conditions become unsafe.
- Do not leave a running mower unattended. Follow the manual’s shutdown procedure whenever you stop work.
If grass blocks the chute or the mower needs attention
Stop the mower and wait until the blade has completely stopped before clearing a chute or approaching the cutting area. Do not try to clear a blockage while the blade is moving, and do not reach beneath the deck. If the blade does not stop as expected or you are unsure how to make the mower safe, move away and consult the manual or a qualified service provider.
